Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Russell was not the first African American to play professional basketball, but he was its first black superstar. From the moment he stepped onto the court of the Boston Garden in 1956, Russell began to transform the sport in a fundamental way, making him, more than any of his contemporaries, the Jackie Robinson of basketball. In King of the Court, Aram Goudsouzian provides a vivid and engrossing chronicle of the life and career of this brilliant champion and courageous racial pioneer. Russell’s leaping, wide-ranging defense altered the game’s texture. His teams provided models of racial integration in the 1950s and 1960s, and, in 1966, he became the first black coach of any major professional team sport. Yet, like no athlete before him, Russell challenged the politics of sport. Instead of displaying appreciative deference, he decried racist institutions, embraced his African roots, and challenged the nonviolent tenets of the civil rights movement. This beautifully written book—sophisticated, nuanced, and insightful—reveals a singular individual who expressed the dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. while echoing the warnings of Malcolm X.

Book excerpt: Heineman examined student newspapers, government documents, and personal archives, interviewed activists, and attended activist reunions to recreate the origins of the anti-Vietnam War movement at state institutions. He here presents his findings, examining the involvement of state universities in military research--and the attitudes of students, faculty, clergy, and administrators thereto-- and the manner in which the campus peace campaign took hold and spread to become a national movement. Book excerpt: THE SUBTITLE OF THIS SIXTH AND FINAL VOLUME of The Vincentians, “Internationalization and Aggiornamento (1919–1980),” describes the growth and change of the Congregation of the Mission in the twentieth century. Formerly European in focus, the provinces of the Congregation gained their own voice. Membership in mission lands, such as China, Brazil, and Ethiopia, surged, as local vocations joined their European confreres. The same is true of maturing provinces elsewhere. St. Vincent de Paul’s congregation became internationalized in both outreach and membership. The Vincentians in these recent decades also tasted the bitterness of persecution. The Congregation was suppressed at various times in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Its members often reacted by moving elsewhere, thus furthering the internationalization of the Vincentian charism. Under the Nazis and Communist regimes, many suffered imprisonment, torture, and death. The provinces of Central Europe (Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland), to say nothing of China, were particularly hard-hit. Updating (aggiornamento) was the watchword toward the close of this period. As society changed, so did the Church, and with it the Vincentians. The process was difficult and painful, but it moved the Congregation in directions originally laid down by the Founder. Increasingly, the members emphasized mutual cooperation with many Vincentian-inspired lay organizations, the Vincentian Family. The inspiration shared among them all has been a further manifestation of the compelling insights of St. Vincent de Paul.

Book excerpt: An extensive body of law designed to control international terror violence has come into being, and it is this assembly of reports and resolutions, conventions and scattered treaty provisions that we must rely on as we move toward an enforceable, unambiguous anti-"terrorism" regime in international law. These legal instruments are gathered together for the first time in this definitive two volume set. The only published source of all United Nations documentation since 1972 on the subject of "terrorism"--including all 180 reports and resolutions adopted since that date and up to June 2001. Plus, an introductory article by the editor provides a forward-looking view of the evolving challenges in combating the ever-changing manifestations of terror violence. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint. The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9781571052278).
