Book excerpt: CLASSIC STORIES ABOUT AMERICA’S FAVORITE UPLAND GAME BIRD—AND ABOUT THE MEN AND DOGS WHO HUNT IT First published in 1935, this collection of stories on grouse hunting from specialist Burton L. Spiller was widely considered by many to be the best book ever written on the topic, and at the very least it should be a part of every grouse hunter’s library. Beautifully illustrated throughout by Lynn Bogue Hunt. “Burton L. Spiller’s twin books, Grouse Feathers and More Grouse Feathers, are classics; they are as stirring today as they were in their first Derrydale editions, so true that time stands still. “Long ago these volumes became collector’s items.... The incomparable delights of grouse hunting, the aroma of a clean wilderness, and the almost pagan rapport that exists between a man and his dog never change. I hold Burt Spiller the finest grouse writer who ever lived.”—Frank Woolner, author of Grouse and Grouse Hunting “The reappearance of these two delightful blendings of warm, sensitive prose and fine art will gladden the hearts of all grouse hunters and lovers of fine hunting literature....”—Eric Peper, Editor, Field & Stream Book Club

Book excerpt: The young farmer, shouldering the stock of his double-barrelled shotgun, and sighting, squeezed off both triggers at the flock of crows rising from his field. He was discouraged to see that he had not hit even one of them, though the sun was momentarily obscured and the sky became dark as a storm of feathers fell all around him, and each feather that fell to ground, was, he realised, a tale that had to be told.

Book excerpt: In December 1998, San Antonio Express-News reporter Philip True vanished during a solo backcountry trek in western Mexico, home of the reclusive Huichol Indians and the Chapalagana, the Twisted Serpent Canyon, a 150-mile long gash that twists and plunges through the heart of the Sierra Madre. Five days later his editor, Robert Rivard, was part of a small search party that, nearly miraculously, tracked a trail of feathers that had leaked from True's sleeping bag to find his body. Trail of Feathers is the story of the search for True and of the quest to bring his killers to justice. It is also the story of another perplexing mystery: Why had True taken such a dangerous trip, into such a raw, uncivilized wilderness, alone and without sufficient safety preparations, in the first place? After an unhappy and unsettled youth, True was at the age of fifty finally settling down to a career and a wife he loved. His first child was about to be born. What was he running from, or to? Rivard's search for answers to these questions leads him deep into the Sierra Madre Occidental, one of Mexico's last true wildernesses, and deep into the secrets of Philip True's past. It also leads him into his own past, and an acknowledgment of the ways in which his life and True's mirrored each other. Suspenseful, atmospheric, and moving, Trail of Feathers is more than a true crime tale; it's a classic tragedy about how the past reverberates destructively into the present — for individuals, for cultures, for nations.

Book excerpt: “These letters reveal how I remembered I had wings, and that I could fly – not because I had them, but because I had the courage to use them.” The ageing Arabella Gallina is struggling to pack up her family’s centuries-old coffee plantation house in Costa Rica. Receiving a visit from her son James, she discovers that his daughter, Isabella, is facing challenges in far-away England. Reluctantly at first, Arabella begins a correspondence with her granddaughter that eventually allows them both to make sense of the inevitable pain that life delivers to us all. Pen Pal Feathers is the multigenerational story of a remarkable family, a magic realism narrative that winds through Europe and the Americas and encompasses the full sweep of the 20th century. It reveals the powerful bonds between generations and how those bonds shape our lives – how enduring familial love can supply the wings that enable us to fly.

Book excerpt: "Pommersheim's book captures the unique evolution of tribal court jurisprudence and the continuing challenge facing tribal courts to meet the demands of the communities they serve. . . . A must read."—Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Colorado "Braid of Feathers bursts with insights and rich evocations of the contemporary rebirth of American Indian cultures and practices. Written from the inside of tribal worlds, this book simultaneously affords a powerful vision of American pluralism. Useful analysis of timely topics, such as economic development initiatives using gambling enterprises, undergirds this important contribution to American Indian law and American studies."—Martha L. Minow, Professor, Harvard Law School "A fresh approach by a thoroughly practical and experienced attorney/professor who understands the complexity of law as it is applied to living societies. Pommersheim deals easily with complex theories and doctrines because he has the good common sense to know that law must be worked out in Indian communities to promote a sense of order and, if possible, a modicum of justice. This volume will stimulate readers to move beyond abstractions and seek realistic solutions to perennial problems."—Vine Deloria, Jr., University of Colorado at Boulder

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder mystery novelist Mr Curran is found dead in a locked room following a dinner party. The disappearance of his fiancé makes her the most obvious suspect – but there is more to this case than meets the eye. Detective Kinney is on the case, but the meddling of the other guests means he needs to call on the services of Detective Fleming Stone. The fourteenth in the ‘Fleming Stone’ series of detective novels by prolific author Carolyn Wells, this is a classic murder mystery. Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was a prolific American novelist and poet, best known for her children’s literature, mystery novels and humorous verse. Following school in New Jersey, Wells worked as a librarian, where she developed her love of reading. It was during 1896 that Wells' first book ‘At the Sign of the Sphinx’ was published. From 1900 she dedicated herself to her literary career, writing over 170 novels in total across a range of genres. Some of her most loved works include the ‘Patty Fairfield’ and ‘Marjorie Maynard’ series for girls, as well as the ‘Fleming Stone’ mystery series for adults. Wells is also well-known for her humorous nonsense verse, and was a frequent contributor of verse to magazines. She published an autobiography ‘The Rest of my Life’ in 1937. Wells died in New York City in 1942.
