Book excerpt: Jobcentre Plus has traditionally conducted a biennial customer satisfaction survey and follow-up qualitative study in order to monitor levels of customer satisfaction and identify potential areas for improvement. It was necessary to update the survey questionnaire to ensure it captures the key indicators of Departmental Strategic Objective Seven (DSO7), and to increase the frequency of reporting to enable faster implementation of operational changes in response to findings. This report presents findings from a feasibility study which explores potential design options for a new measure of Jobcentre Plus customer satisfaction.

The main objective of the new survey is to monitor satisfaction with the service by identifying particular elements which lead to higher and lower levels of satisfaction. Book excerpt: "Under Lone Parent Obligations (LPO) some lone parents (depending on the age of their youngest child) are no longer eligible to continue receiving Income Support (IS) and will move to other destinations including Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). A survey of over 2,500 lone parents was undertaken between five and ten months prior to the end of their eligibility for IS when their youngest child is seven to determine their work-readiness and likely requirements in terms of future support. Research design and fieldwork were undertaken by the National Centre for Social Research and the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion. The findings describe lone parents': past employment; characteristics and circumstances including physical and mental health; self-perceived barriers to work; views on childcare and combining work with parenting. This survey is one element of a comprehensive programme of evaluation research, using a mixed methods approach, to assess the effects of LPO." -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing employment and supporting people into work are key elements of the Government's public health and welfare reform agendas. This independent review, commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, examines scientific evidence on the health benefits of work, focusing on adults of working age and the common health problems that account for two-thirds of sickness absence and long-term incapacity. The study finds that there is a strong evidence base showing that work is generally good for physical and mental health and well-being, taking into account the nature and quality of work and its social context, and that worklessness is associated with poorer physical and mental health. Work can be therapeutic and can reverse the adverse health effects of unemployment, in relation to healthy people of working age, for many disabled people, for most people with common health problems and for social security beneficiaries.

It is likely to become the standard manual on all graduate and undergraduate courses on qualitative methods' - Professor Robert Walker, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham What exactly is qualitative research? What are the processes involved and what can it deliver as a mode of inquiry? Qualitative research is an exciting blend of scientific investigation and creative discovery. Book excerpt: Paid work is absolutely central to the culture and politics of capitalist societies, yet today’s work-centred world is becoming increasingly hostile to the human need for autonomy, spontaneity and community. The grim reality of a society in which some are overworked, whilst others are condemned to intermittent work and unemployment, is progressively more difficult to tolerate. In this thought-provoking book, David Frayne questions the central place of work in mainstream political visions of the future, laying bare the ways in which economic demands colonise our lives and priorities. Drawing on his original research into the lives of people who are actively resisting nine-to-five employment, Frayne asks what motivates these people to disconnect from work, whether or not their resistance is futile, and whether they might have the capacity to inspire an alternative form of development, based on a reduction and social redistribution of work. A crucial dissection of the work-centred nature of modern society and emerging resistance to it, The Refusal of Work is a bold call for a more humane and sustainable vision of social progress.

Restructuring processes take place and part of the workforce is forced to find other employment. In addition, it addresses possible lessons the Netherlands can learn from these foreign job-to-job arrangements.
