Due to that, new types of collection and transmission systems such as DC collection and HVDC transmission are being developed. In this thesis, three different offshore wind park layouts are investigated which are AC/AC, AC/DC and DC/DC. The aim is to compare these three different options in order to establish the feasibility of the new DC/DC technology. Precisely the DC Series layout. The main characteristics of this system is the 250 kV DC cable used in the collection system where the wind turbines feed them with voltage instead of current. To do that, the AC transformer of the wind turbine is replaced by a DC-DC converter with medium frequency transformer inside it. Moreover, this same cable is used for the transmission system too. Then, the number of offshore platforms is reduced resulting with economical savings in the investment cost. The results show as the DC Series the most economical and productive as 107 M e and 466 M e in wind parks of 500 MW and 1000 MW are saved. Also, the efficiency is higher than for the other two systems, AC/AC and AC/DC. Furthermore, the case, where the largest offshore wind park in Sweden (Lillgrund) is evaluated, shows the benefits of DC Series from medium distances (20 km). As a result of that, the feasibility of DC series system is insured for future offshore wind parks projects in Sweden.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports an investigation into the feasibility of a novel vessel concept, designed to allow safe access for personnel to and from offshore wind turbines in sea states in which the facility would be currently inaccessible. The problem of accessing offshore wind turbines is an issue that has been identified as a major cause of turbine downtime. Access is required to carry out maintenance and repairs but is often delayed by days or even weeks due to the weather conditions and the limitations of the current access procedures. Blessing's Design Research Methodology was adopted to give the research structure. A literature review was conducted to identify the cause of the problem and establish the working window for which the vessel must be designed (the specification) and a review was completed to identify existing technology that could be utilised in the development phase. The concept design was then developed using Pugh's Total Design Methodology and a number of alternatives were developed and reviewed before a single concept was selected. The selected concept is a catamaran vessel with the capability to take on significant ballast water whilst jacking the deck away from the hulls, creating two distinct vessel configurations: the transit mode where it operates as a standard, fast catamaran for getting to and from sites and the transfer mode where it has a higher displacement and a reduced waterplane area, reducing deck movement in rough seas. The developed design was analysed to identify the stability and sea-keeping characteristics of the design both computationally and physically in a hydrodynamic laboratory. The analysis identified significant reductions in vessel movement in heave, pitch and roll in the transfer mode when compared to the transit mode. This will allow safer personnel transfer in higher seas than the current crew transfer catamarans. The research concluded that the concept is feasible and outlines the further work required to commercialise the design.

Book excerpt: This shared resource CRADA defines research collaborations between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Principle Power, Inc. and its subsidiaries ('Principle Power'). Under the terms and conditions described in this CRADA agreement, NREL and Principle Power will collaborate on the DEMOWFLOAT project, a full-scale 2-MW demonstration project of a novel floating support structure for large offshore wind turbines, called WindFloat. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the long-term field performance of the WindFloat design, thus enabling the future commercialized deployment of floating deepwater offshore wind power plants. NREL is the leading U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory for the development and advancement of renewable energy and has a strong interest in offshore wind and the development of deepwater offshore wind systems. NREL will provide expertise and resources to the DEMOWFLOAT project in assessing the environmental impacts, independent technical performance validation, and engineering analysis. Principle Power is a Seattle, Washington-based renewable energy company that owns all the intellectual property associated with the WindFloat. In return for NREL's support of the DEMOWFLOAT project, Principle Power will provide NREL with valuable test data from the project that will be used to validate the numerical tools developed by NREL for analyzing offshore wind turbines. In addition, NREL will gain experience and knowledge in offshore wind designs and testing methods through this collaboration. NREL and Principle Power will work together to advance floating offshore wind technology, and demonstrate its viability for supplying the world with a new clean energy source.

Book excerpt: Wind energy is one of the cleanest and most available resources in the world, and advancements in wind technology are making it more cost effective. Though wind power is rapidly developing in many regions, its variable nature creates obstacles in integrating significant amounts of wind power to the electric grid. One potential solution for reducing the fluctuating nature of wind power is to site wind projects in regions of complementing wind regimes to reduce variability. This thesis explores the feasibility of creating a coordinated network of offshore wind projects through examining its technological requirements, economic viability, and the policy and planning issues of building such a network in the U.S. Wind speed data for sites along the east coast of the U.S. are used to analyze the nature of offshore wind patterns and the benefits of interconnecting multiple wind projects. The main questions are: 1) Is an offshore wind network technologically feasible? 2) What are the costs and benefits of creating an offshore network with transmission lines? 3) What are potential ways to plan, permit, and develop such a network? An overview of research on existing turbine technology, turbine foundation technology, and transmission technology show that it is technically possible to build a network of offshore wind projects. An analysis of the costs and benefits of physical interconnection show that the cost savings from reduced variability pale in comparison to interconnection costs. It is more cost effective to coordinate the siting of all projects within the network, by connect the projects directly to the onshore grid as opposed to creating a separate, offshore grid for wind projects. The current planning process for offshore wind development permits projects on a site-by-site basis, so developing an entire network of sites with the goal of reducing variability would require an extensive stakeholder process where all relevant parties agree on a set of sites. A coordinated network could also be developed over time by incorporating variability as a priority in the permitting process.

Book excerpt: Offshore wind provides a scalable alternative to conventional energy resources. This chapter provides an insight into various activities of Ministry of Earth Sciences for the realization of offshore wind in India. To understand the hurdles in policy frame work for offshore wind, the evolution of onshore wind policy is analyzed and suitable strategies for offshore wind are proposed. Wind resource assessment results indicated a high offshore potential at Kanyakumari, Rameshwaram, Gulf of Khambhat, and Gulf of Kutch. Commercial viability studies showed levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of around Rs 10/kWh at identified sites for an internal rate of return (IRR) of 14%. Offshore light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based data collection platform has been installed at Gulf of Khambhat and Kutch to obtain bankable wind data for the development of offshore wind farms. A preliminary design of substructure by exploring different concepts like monopile, jacket, and gravity-based foundations was carried out based on their suitability for site-specific environmental and soil data. The port facilities along Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coast were assessed, and installation methodology was developed considering marine spread along the Indian coast.
