Book excerpt: Most of us at some point in our lives will be struck by major traumas such as the sudden death of a loved one, a debilitating disease, assault, or a natural disaster. Resilience refers to the ability to 'bounce back' after encountering difficulty. This book provides a guide to building emotional, mental and physical resilience by presenting ten factors to help anyone become more resilient to life's challenges. Specific resilience factors such as facing fear, optimism, and social support are described through the experiences and personal reflections of highly resilient survivors. These survivors also describe real-life methods for practicing and benefiting from the resilience factors. As resilience is the complex product of genetic, psychological, biological, social, and spiritual factors, the authors investigate resilience from multiple scientific perspectives. They synthesize the latest literature on the topic, describe their own research on resilience, and quote from their interviews with highly resilient people.

Book excerpt: Think BiG Motivate Your Self To Win Scarcity thinking is a limiting belief that there isn't enough. Abundance thinking is a belief that there is always more than enough for everyone. If you think small (scarcity thinking) understand that it's not your fault. You've been taught since birth that there is not enough. There isn't enough water, money, clean air, etc. But, the truth is, there is abundance in the world, so there is not just enough to go around, there is an overflow of enough to go around. Thinking Small (Scarcity Mindset) When you think small you believe that no matter how hard you work there will never be enough. Due to this idea of scarcity, you act like you're in competition with the world for your every breath. You often tend to hoard things/money, don't want to help others because they might take your ideas, and you often develop a chip on your shoulder about your competition. You may even be terrified of being replaced in all aspects of your life whether it's work or your personal life. A person with a scarcity mindset tends to unrealistically portray the role of either a bully or a victim causing a win-lose scenario. Win-win is not a concept they can reconcile. As opposed to the first mode of living (scarcity mindset), the abundance mindset does exist. An abundance mindset is based on the conviction that there is more than enough for everyone. Thinking abundantly is not just about money, but it embraces the idea of life as a whole, where there are enough opportunities for all, and infinite sources of wealth and goodness. With this mindset, there is everything to gain and nothing much to lose by giving money away and using it, simply because abundance will cause money to find its way back to you; what you lose, you can gain back and more. This mode of living relies greatly on faith and trust in the abundance of life. A person with an abundance mindset gets to live a more satisfying and fulfilling life. They feel more secure, relaxed, and happy in the knowledge that there is simply more than enough. They approach life with more excitement amidst challenges and they employ the use of their power and confidence in their ability to attract abundance, creating more opportunities, as well as help and motivate others. Given the two contrasting mindsets, are you more aware of where you stand? If you want to build an abundance mindset, What are the effective ways to do just that.

Book excerpt: If you want your company to thrive, you need to break one of the oldest unwritten rules of leadership. Leaders in nearly every industry have learned to keep a professional "distance" between themselves and the people who report to them—to avoid getting too close or too personal. This unwritten rule of leadership is pervasive and quietly destructive, and, little by little, keeping ourselves at arm's length destroys trust, collaboration, and the very fabric of organizations. When Tom Gartland became president of Avis Budget Group, North America, he wanted the corporate culture to become more "open and connected"—so he started with himself. His message was "business is personal—very personal." As he grew closer and connected more with those he was leading, he became a more effective leader, and those around him were inspired to create unprecedented results. Tom found that when we truly open up and care about the people we work with, we can transform organizations into sanctuaries where people feel a deep connection to one another, a profound sense of being part of an important mission, and extraordinary engagement in their work. The result? Employees who feel valued generate exceptional profits. After applying this business philosophy at Avis, not only did Tom see an increase in employee morale, he also saw a significant increase in the company's bottom line. In Lead with Heart, Tom provides an unconventional approach to business leadership, including advice and strategies on how to open yourself up as a leader, recognize potential in your employees, and increase employees' trust in you and the company. Lead with Heart is the revolutionary leadership book that will help managers and employees at all levels grow their businesses by connecting, honestly and meaningfully, with the people they lead.

Book excerpt: The coauthors of the bestselling Peak Performance dive into the fascinating science behind passion, showing how it can lead to a rich and meaningful life while also illuminating the ways in which it is a double-edged sword. Here’s how to cultivate a passion that will take you to great heights—while minimizing the risk of an equally great fall. Common advice is to find and follow your passion. A life of passion is a good life, or so we are told. But it's not that simple. Rarely is passion something that you just stumble upon, and the same drive that fuels breakthroughs—whether they're athletic, scientific, entrepreneurial, or artistic—can be every bit as destructive as it is productive. Yes, passion can be a wonderful gift, but only if you know how to channel it. If you're not careful, passion can become an awful curse, leading to endless seeking, suffering, and burnout. Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find and cultivate their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance--that other virtue touted by our culture--are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And that's not always a bad thing. They show readers how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life. Swift, compact, and powerful, this thought-provoking book combines captivating stories of extraordinarily passionate individuals with the latest science on the biological and psychological factors that give rise to—and every bit as important, sustain—passion.
