The essence of Dussel's thought is presented through the concept of "ethical hermeneutics," which seeks to interpret reality from the viewpoint of what Emmanuel Levinas presents as the "other" - those who are vanquished, forgotten, or excluded from existent socio-political or cultural systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Liberating Grace' is an important book on God's presence to human life that relates the new liberationist perspective to the best of the great theological tradition. The author unfolds the meaning of Christian grace in the light of the Latin American experience of dependency and exploitation. He shows that the turn to political involvement does not produce a detachment from the religious roots.--Gregory BaumMcGill UniversityLeonardo Boff's 'Liberating Grace' is a remarkable work. Against the background of traditional interpretations which may have fit the medieval or ancient world, Boff insists that grace must be understood within history and in terms of the kinds of experience we have today. Grace is no longer thought of as a substance but is discovered in the experience of relationships. God's liberating presence in the world permeates both personal and social relations, and this points to the political and economic arenas as keys to understanding God's free gift of love for humanity. Theology from Brazil has the aroma, flavor, and stimulation of something genuine, a grace which permeates all aspects of personal and social experience within the natural world. Boff works this view into various aspects of doctrine, including views of the Incarnation, Holy Spirit, and the Trinity. Chiefly, however, he makes 'grace' into a relevant doctrine for twentieth century living in the Third and other worlds.--Randolph Crump MillerHorace Bushnell Professor of Christian NurtureYale University Divinity School

Book excerpt: From the most prominent thinkers in Latin American philosophy, literature, politics, and social science comes a challenge to conventional theories of globalization. The contributors to this volume imagine a discourse in which revolution is defined not as a temporalized march of progress or takeover of state power, but as a movement for local control that upholds standards of material conditions for human dignity. Essays on identity, equality, and ethics propose models of transcultural and intercultural relations that replace center/periphery or world-systems approaches; they impel us to focus on building dialogic relationships rather than on accommodating universalized paradigms. Ultimately suggesting a reconstruction of the world in terms of the interests of one of the peripheral regions of the world, Latin American Perspectives on Globalization argues with cogency and urgency that no one within contemporary globalization debates can afford to ignore the Latin American philosophical tradition.

Book excerpt: The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems– both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Clodovis Boff rigorously and passionately erects the methodological scaffolding that is necessary to construct a true theology of the political, a true theology of liberation. Much of the book is devoted to clarifying and articulating the boundaries of the relationships among theology, the political, the social sciences, hermeneutics, and praxis. As an element of that constructive work, Boff carefully points out the past and present theoretical shortcomings of political theology and the theology of liberation. Thus the book fills a methodological void that has hampered the full development of a theology of the political, and it blazes a path beyond what the author calls the "first phase" of liberation theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Liberation Theology envisions a radical new direction for Latin American liberation theology. One of a new generation of Latin American theologians, Ivan Petrella shows that despite the current dominance of 'end of history' ideology, liberation theologians need not abandon their belief that the theological rereading of Christianity must be linked to the development of 'historical projects' - models of political and economic organization that would replace an unjust status quo. In the absence of historical projects, liberation theology currently finds itself unable to move beyond merely talking about liberation toward actually enacting it in society. Providing a bold new interpretation of the current state and potential future of liberation theology, Ivan Petrella brings together original research on the movement, with developments in political theory, critical legal theory and political economy to reconstruct liberation theology's understanding of theology, democracy and capitalism. The result is the recovery of historical projects, thus allowing liberation theologians to once again place the reality of liberation, and not just the promise, at the forefront of their task.

This book was released on 1990-07-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberation theologians either argue for the liberating character of popular religion or they vilify it as alienating and otherworldly. This book takes a comprehensive and in- depth look at the issues, questions, and problems that emerge from the debate among liberation theologians in Latin America. The heart of the book consists of a comparative analysis of two prominent theologians, Juan Carlos Scannone from Argentina, and Juan Luis Segundo from Uruguay, who take opposite positions. Scannone sees popular religion as essentially liberating because it is from the people. Segundo disparages popular religion as a mass phenomenon incapable of revolutionary change and looks forward to its demise. Candelaria synthesizes these contrary positions into a new paradigm for examining the question of popular religion and liberation. On the basis of this synthesis, he formulates a principle for articulating the relationship between popular religion and liberation and with special reference to the situation of Hispanics in the United States.
