In this work, to enhance the fault ride-through capability of a fixed speed wind generator system, a modified configuration of Bridge-Type Fault Current Limiter (BFCL) is proposed. To check the effectiveness of the proposed BFCL, its performance is compared with that of the Series Dynamic Braking Resistor (SDBR). A harmonic performance improvement by the proposed method is also analyzed. Three-line-to-ground (3LG), line-to-line (LL) and single-line-to-ground (1LG) faults were applied to one of the double circuit transmission lines connected to the wind generator system. Simulations were carried out using Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results show that the proposed BFCL is very effective device to achieve the FRT and suppress fault current that eliminates the need for circuit breaker replacement. Also, the BFCL improves the harmonic performance and helps follow harmonic grid code. Moreover, it was found that the BFCL works better than the SDBR, and has some distinct advantages over the SDBR.

Book excerpt: Due to environmental pollution and climate change, the use of renewable energy sources as an alternative means of power generation is on the rise globally. This is because of their clean nature, which makes them ecofriendly with little or no pollution compared to the traditional fossil fuel power-generation power plants. Among the various renewable energy sources, wind energy is one of the most widely employed, due to its promising technology. Wind turbine technologies could be classified into two groups as follows: Fixed Speed Wind Turbines (FSWTs) and Variable Speed Wind Turbines (VSWTs). There have been tremendous improvements in wind turbine technology over the years, from FSWTs to VSWTs, as a result of fast innovations and advanced developments in power electronics. Thus, the VSWTs have better wind energy capture and conversion efficiencies, less acoustic noise and mechanical stress, and better power quality in power grids without support from external reactive power compensators due to the stochastic nature of wind energy. The two most widely employed VSWTs in wind farm development are the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind turbines. In order to solve transient stability intricacies during power grid faults, this book proposes different control strategies for the DFIG and PMSG wind turbines.

Book excerpt: This book deals with quantifying and analyzing the risks associated with sustainable energy technology growth in electric power systems, and developing appropriate models and methodologies to mitigate the risks and improve the overall system performance. The rapid increase in the installation of renewable energy sources in electric power systems has given rise to a wide range of problems related to planning and operation of power systems to maintain quality, stability, reliability and efficiency. Additionally, there is a growing global environmental concern regarding increasing emissions from the electric power generation required to meet rising energy needs and support sustainable and inclusive development. The phenomenon of low voltage ride through (LVRT), common to wind energy systems, is discussed, and ways to tackle the same are proposed in the first chapter. Subsequent chapters propose methods of optimizing a sustainable and smart microgrid, and supplying electricity to remote areas of a developing country with no immediate possibility of national grid extension. The economic benefit and technical challenges of forming localized minigrid are also discussed. The book proposes a method for reliability assessment of a power grid with sustainable power transportation system. The issue of weak link in power system is very important as it will provide the system operators and planners to take necessary measures to strengthen the system. An approach to determine the weak parts of the system and its unreliability is proposed. With increasing installation of HVDC power transmission and development of efficient and low cost power electronic devices, the DC microgrids are becoming a common phenomenon. Their existence together with AC Grids result in Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids, which are discussed in this book. It further presents a method for reliability evaluation of a distribution system with network reconfiguration in the presence of distributed generation. The important problems in sustainable energy growth, and their potential solutions discussed and presented in the book should be of great interest to engineers, policy makers, researchers and academics in the area of electric power engineering.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is very effective in the fast-growing wind generator (WG) market. The foremost concern for the DFIG based WG system is to maintain the transient stability during fault, as the stator of the DFIG is directly connected to the grid. Therefore, transient stability enhancement of the DFIG is very important. In this work, a diode-bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter (NSFCL) and resistive solid-state fault current limiter (R-type SSFCL) are examined to augment the transient stability of the DFIG based WG system. In simulations, temporary balanced and unbalanced faults were applied in the test system to investigate the proposed NSFCL and the R-type SSFCL transient stability performance. Besides a DC resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), bridge-type fault current limiter (BFCL) and series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) are also considered to compare their performance with the proposed NSFCL and R-type SSFCL. These simulations were performed with Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results clearly indicate that the NSFCL and R-type SSFCL enhances the transient stability of the DFIG based WG. Moreover, the NSFCL works better than the DC resistive SFCL, BFCL and SDBR in every aspect and R-type SSFCL works better than the SDBR in all aspect.

The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has the ability to prevent the magnitude of short-circuit current from increasing. This work proposes the SFCL device to enhance the voltage stability of a fixed-speed wind generator system. In this work the performance of SFCL is compared to that of the thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) method and the pitch control method. The comparison is done in terms of voltage stability enhancement, controller complexity and cost. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is tested considering permanent and temporary, balanced and unbalanced faults in the power system model consisting of a wind generator and a synchronous generator. From the simulation results it is evident that performance of SFCL is better. On comparison it can be concluded that SFCL performs better when compared to TSC or pitch control method. Simulations are performed through Matlab/Simulink software.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is the most popular technology to harness the wind power due to its ability to adapt to variable wind speed and to capture more wind energy. However, the DFIG based variable speed wind generator is vulnerable to faults, as the stator of the DFIG is directly connected to the grid. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults may cause the DFIG face high mechanical stress, which may lead to mechanical damage. According to the grid code, the transient stability enhancement of the DFIG system is very important. Though the DFIG has a salient feature of the fault ride through capability, this is not sufficient to preserve the regulations of the grid code at all situations. In this dissertation, in order to enhance the transient stability of the DFIG based variable speed wind generation system, first the performance of the different types of internal controlled devices such as, crowbar, DC chopper and parallel capacitor with the DC link of DFIG system has been investigated. From the analysis, it is established that the internal controlled devices cannot maintain the grid code during all types of network faults. This testifies the importance of the application of the auxiliary devices to enhance the transient stability of the DFIG based wind generator system. An investigation has been made to explore a device which could provide the best performance in terms of transient stability enhancement for a grid-connected DFIG system during faults. Ultimately, a DC resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is proposed because of its best performance. The DC resistive SFCL reduces the system power losses during stable operation of the network with improved system efficiency, in comparison with the conventional SFCL. One of the salient features of using the SFCL is that it does not require any controller, and immune to any sort of cyber threat or vulnerability. To verify the transient stability performance of the DFIG based wind generator system with the proposed DC resistive SFCL, both the symmetrical and asymmetrical faults are considered. The performance of the DC resistive SFCL is compared to that of the series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) and the conventional SFCL. Simulations are carried out by using the Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results clearly indicate that the proposed DC resistive SFCL shows the best performance to enhance the transient stability of the DFIG based wind generator system.

Book excerpt: A comparison among series connected auxiliary devices; SFCL, DVR, TCSC, and SDBR is performed in terms of fault ride through capability improvement of a fixed speed wind generator systems, controller complexity, and cost. The tested system consists of one synchronous generator and one squirrel cage induction machine based wind generator, which feed an infinite bus through a double circuit transmission line. Simulation results show that all the devices performs well under symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults, however, in spite of the DVR controller complexity it has the best performance among all devices in terms of voltage, and speed control of wind generators at lower cost as compared to the SFCL which is costliest among all devices. The SFCL is the most efficient in reducing the fluctuations of active power and stator current of the wind generators. The SDBR is the cheapest, and shows a better enhancement in damping active power and limiting fault current than DVR and TCSC.
