Book excerpt: With the fast development of batteries, sensors, and electric motors in the past decade, the ground vehicles are being increasingly electrified. With more sensors and actuators being equipped, they may suffer from increased possibility of sensor and actuator faults. This dissertation therefore addresses the fault estimation for sensors and actuators as well as fault-tolerant control for one type of electrified ground vehicle, i.e., the in-wheel motor electric vehicle. First, a prototype in-wheel motor electric vehicle is presented and the experimental platform is discussed. Then the problem of sensor fault estimation and reconstruction of contaminated signal is studied. Vehicle yaw rate signal is chosen as the contaminated signal and a robust gain-scheduling observer is proposed accordingly. Second, the steering motor fault estimation approach is developed because steering motor faults always impose a great threat to vehicle stability and safety. Furthermore, fault-type identification is also considered, which can provide detailed information of the type and magnitude of the actuator fault. Last, to deal with actuator fault and recover the faulty vehicle, an active fault-tolerant control system is proposed for in-wheel motor electric vehicles. It uses a baseline controller to accommodate actuator faults and stabilize the faulty vehicle when an actuator fault occurs. Actuator fault is detected and estimated by the fault detection and diagnosis mechanism. After that, a proper reconfigurable controller is switched on to recover the faulty vehicle. The proposed sensor and actuator fault estimation approaches and active fault-tolerant control system have been validated through simulations in CarSim® and/or vehicle experimental tests on an electric vehicle. At the end, future work and directions are given, which may further address the problems discussed in this dissertation.

Book excerpt: Robust Integration of Model-Based Fault Estimation and Fault-Tolerant Control is a systematic examination of methods used to overcome the inevitable system uncertainties arising when a fault estimation (FE) function and a fault-tolerant controller interact as they are employed together to compensate for system faults and maintain robustly acceptable system performance. It covers the important subject of robust integration of FE and FTC with the aim of guaranteeing closed-loop stability. The reader’s understanding of the theory is supported by the extensive use of tutorial examples, including some MATLAB®-based material available from the Springer website and by industrial-applications-based material. The text is structured into three parts: Part I examines the basic concepts of FE and FTC, providing extensive insight into the importance of and challenges involved in their integration; Part II describes five effective strategies for the integration of FE and FTC: sequential, iterative, simultaneous, adaptive-decoupling, and robust decoupling; and Part III begins to extend the proposed strategies to nonlinear and large-scale systems and covers their application in the fields of renewable energy, robotics and networked systems. The strategies presented are applicable to a broad range of control problems, because in the absence of faults the FE-based FTC naturally reverts to conventional observer-based control. The book is a useful resource for researchers and engineers working in the area of fault-tolerant control systems, and supplementary material for a graduate- or postgraduate-level course on fault diagnosis and FTC. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Its impetus derives from the need for an overview of the challenges of the fault diagnosis technique and sustainable control, especially for those demanding systems that require reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety to ensure efficient operations. Moreover, the need for a high degree of tolerance with respect to possible faults represents a further key point, primarily for complex systems, as modeling and control are inherently challenging, and maintenance is both expensive and safety-critical. This book was released on 2014 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing demand for vehicles with less environmental impact and higher fuel efficiency. To meet these requirements, the transportation electrification has been introduced in both academia and industry during last years. Electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid Electric vehicle (HEV) are two practical examples in transportation systems. The typical power train in the EVs consists of three main parts including energy source, power electronics and an electrical motor. Regarding the machine, permanent magnet (PM) motors are the dominant choice for light duty hybrid vehicles in industry due to their higher efficiency and power density. In order to operate the power train, the electrical machine can be supplied and controlled by a voltage source inverter (VSI). The converter is subjected to various fault types. According to the statistics, 38% of faults in a motor drive are due to the power converter. On the other side, the electrical power train should meet a high level of reliability. Multiphase PM machines can meet the reliability requirements due to their fault-tolerant characteristics. The machine can still be operational with faults in multiple phases. Consequently, to realize a multiphase fault-tolerant motor drive, three main concepts should be developed including fault detection (FD), fault isolation and fault-tolerant control. This PhD thesis is therefore focused on FD and fault-tolerant control of a multiphase VSI. To achieve this research goal, the presented FD and control methods of the power converter are thoroughly investigated through literature review. Following that, the operational condition of the multiphase converter supplying the electrical machine is studied. Regarding FD methods in multiphase, three new algorithms are presented in this thesis. These proposed FD methods are also embedded in new fault-tolerant control algorithms. At the first step, a novel model based FD method is proposed to detect multiple open switch faults. This FD method is included in the developed adaptive proportional resonant control algorithm of the power converter. At the second step, two signal based FD methods are proposed. Fault-tolerant control of the power converter with the conventional PI controller is discussed. Furthermore, the theory of SMC is developed. At the last step, finite control set (FCS) model predictive control (MPC) of the five-phase brushless direct current (BLDC) motor is discussed for the first time in this thesis. A simple FD method is derived from the control signals. Inputs to all developed methods are the five-phase currents of the motor. The theory of each method is explained and compared with available methods. To validate the developed theory at each part, FD algorithm is embedded in the fault-tolerant control algorithm. Experimental results are conducted on a five-phase BLDC motor drive. The electrical motor used in the experimental results has an in-wheel outer rotor structure. This motor is suitable for electric vehicles. At the end of each part, the remarkable points and conclusions are presented.

Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses the fault-tolerant (FT) control and fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) problems for certain over-actuated systems with applications to electric ground vehicles. Two different control effort grouping methods are proposed to transfer the over-actuated system model to a square system to facilitate the controller design. By these control effort grouping method, the dynamics of the nonlinear over-actuated system with actuator faults is further modeled based on a generalized actuator fault model. A sliding mode control technique based FT controller is first designed to attenuate the disturbance and the uncertainty caused by the actuator fault. In order to avoid the possible chatting effects from the sliding model controller, a gain-scheduling robust controller based on the linear-parameter varying (LPV) technology is designed to against the actuator faults. The eigenvalue positions of the system matrix of the closed-loop system are also constrained into a disk to obtain better transient responses. Both of the proposed FT control methods can automatically distribute control efforts to each of the actuators without using the control allocation algorithms. In the FDD design, the actuator redundancy and identicalness are used to estimate the unknown parameter which is a common parameter of the actuators. An observer is employed to estimate the unknown parameter from each respective actuator, and the accurate estimate of the unknown parameter is obtained by rejecting the erroneous estimate of the faulty actuator though a voting scheme. The obtained accurate estimate of the unknown parameter is then adopted to calculate the residuals and detect the actuator fault. The external yaw moment generated from a four-wheel-independently-actuated (FWIA) ground vehicle, together with the automatic steering using an active steering system, make it possible to simultaneously regulate the vehicle lateral velocity and track the desired yaw rate. FT controller design for a FWIA vehicle equipped an active steering system is especially investigated.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Intelligent Vehicles provides a complete coverage of the fundamentals, new technologies, and sub-areas essential to the development of intelligent vehicles; it also includes advances made to date, challenges, and future trends. Significant strides in the field have been made to date; however, so far there has been no single book or volume which captures these advances in a comprehensive format, addressing all essential components and subspecialties of intelligent vehicles, as this book does. Since the intended users are engineering practitioners, as well as researchers and graduate students, the book chapters do not only cover fundamentals, methods, and algorithms but also include how software/hardware are implemented, and demonstrate the advances along with their present challenges. Research at both component and systems levels are required to advance the functionality of intelligent vehicles. This volume covers both of these aspects in addition to the fundamentals listed above.

To fulfill those requirements various Vehicle Control Systems (VCS) have been developed. The increased complexity and the availability of sensors lead to the opportunity to develop and use Faul Detection (FD) and Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) systems. This dissertation deals with a) the modeling and estimation of damper faults in a semi-active suspension and b) FD and FTC design for the vehicle longitudinal-lateral dynamics. First, a faulty damper model was proposed and validated using experimental data of a commercial passive damper with different oil leakage levels. From this model, a FDD strategy based on the frequency response of the Quarter of Vehicle model was developed. Experimental results on a 1:5 scale vehicle show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy to estimate damper faults considering parametric uncertainty and road disturbance. On the other hand, it is shown that the steering and velocity control problem must be treated as a cross-coupled problem. Decentralized controllers for these subsystems are designed, practically eliminating the cross-coupling. A further problem is the propagation of the failure of one subsystem to the other subsystems. In particular, when theSpeed Control System (SpCS) fails, the steering subsystem performance is degraded due to cross-coupling. To maintain the lateral dynamics performance in presence of faults, FD and FTC schemes were proposed to accommodate failures of the SpCS within the steering control system. Simulation results using a full nonlinear vehicle model show that the proposed scheme is able to compensate the fault effects. "--Resumen hoja vi.

Book excerpt: With increasing demands for efficiency and product quality plus progress in the integration of automatic control systems in high-cost mechatronic and safety-critical processes, the field of supervision (or monitoring), fault detection and fault diagnosis plays an important role. The book gives an introduction into advanced methods of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD). After definitions of important terms, it considers the reliability, availability, safety and systems integrity of technical processes. Then fault-detection methods for single signals without models such as limit and trend checking and with harmonic and stochastic models, such as Fourier analysis, correlation and wavelets are treated. This is followed by fault detection with process models using the relationships between signals such as parameter estimation, parity equations, observers and principal component analysis. The treated fault-diagnosis methods include classification methods from Bayes classification to neural networks with decision trees and inference methods from approximate reasoning with fuzzy logic to hybrid fuzzy-neuro systems. Several practical examples for fault detection and diagnosis of DC motor drives, a centrifugal pump, automotive suspension and tire demonstrate applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control systems include many components, such as transducers, sensors, actuators and mechanical parts. These components are required to be operated under some specific conditions. However, due to prolonged operations or harsh operating environment, the properties of these devices may degrade to an unacceptable level, causing more regular fault occurrences. It is therefore necessary to diagnose faults and provide the fault-accommodation control which compensates for the fault of the component by substituting a configuration of redundant elements so that the system continues to operate satisfactorily. In this book, we present a result of several years of work in the area of fault diagnosis and fault-accommodation control. It aims at information estimate methods when faults occur. The book uses the model built from the plant or process, to detect and isolate failures, in contrast to traditional hardware or statistical technologies dealing with failures. It presents model-based learning and design technologies for fault detection, isolation and identification as well as fault-tolerant control. These models are also used to analyse the fault detectability and isolability conditions and discuss the stability of the closed-loop system. It is intended to report new technologies in the area of fault diagnosis, covering fault analysis and control strategies of design for various applications. The book addresses four main schemes: modelling of actuator or sensor faults; fault detection and isolation; fault identification, and fault reconfiguration (accommodation) control. It also covers application issues in the monitoring control of actuators, providing several interesting case studies for more application-oriented readers.
