Book excerpt: The story of Faulkner Hospital begins with the Faulkner family. Dr. George Faulkner's ancestry includes one of the first woolens manufacturers, a Revolutionary War colonel, and an accused Salem witch. When Dr. Faulkner's daughter Mary died, the hospital was established in her honor. Paul Revere's great-granddaughter broke ground on the hospital, which sits on land where the Peacock Tavern, owned by Samuel Adams, once stood. The original building contained 26 beds, 6 of which were free. A nursing school opened in 1903, on the day the hospital opened. Using images from the hospital's vast archives, Faulkner Hospital celebrates the hospital's centennial and explores its rich history as a leader in medicine, education, and community enrichment. Faulkner Hospital is a major teaching hospital to Harvard and Tufts Medical Schools, with many clinical firsts, like the discovery of rejuvenated blood. It is also home to world-renowned breast and headache centers and has implemented many unique concepts, including nurservers and monorails. Readers will learn about the hospital's role in the movie Whose Life Is It Anyway? and discover the famous writers, athletes, and royalty who have visited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine is changing at a speed never witnessed before in history. With each passing year, medical technology achieves the capacity to provide cures and improve treatments that even a short time before were difficult to con ceptualize and impossible to provide. Reproductive technology personifies this concept perhaps better than any other field of medicine. The 1990s have seen an explosion in endoscopic and ambulatory procedures, the application of molecular biology to clinical conditions, and the refinement of assisted reproduction to allow third parties (donors and surrogates) into the process of family building. More than ever before, comprehensive medical care requires a team approach. However, the team comprises not only medical and scientific personnel, but also mental health professionals, lawyers, and ethicists. This integrated and multidisciplinary approach to medical care will become even more necessary as medical capabilities continue to develop faster than society can respond. This book reflects such an approach. It is based on a Harvard Postgraduate Course in June 1990 entitled Infertility in the 1990s: Technological Advances and Their Psychosocial Implications that was sponsored by the Faulkner Centre for Reproductive Medicine. The first half of the course was directed by Drs. M. Seibel, A. Kiessling, and C. Richards. The second half of the course was directed by Dr. M. Seibel, J. Bernstein, R. N. and S. Levin, LICSW.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaica Plain today is one of Boston’s great suburban neighborhoods, but it has not always been connected to the city. The area has a rich and colorful history that stretches from its rural, pastoral beginnings in the seventeenth century. Jamaica Plain became a part of Roxbury, and later West Roxbury, and served as a summer playground for influential Bostonians before becoming part of Boston in 1874. Today, the neighborhood is a bustling suburban spot that has preserved its natural beauty and resources. Stories abound as to how Jamaica Plain derived its name; some trace it to the flow of rum shipments to the port of Boston following Oliver Cromwell’s seizure of Jamaica in 1660. Regardless of how the name came to be, many agree that Jamaica Plain is one of the loveliest areas of New England. The neighborhood’s beauty has been protected by such visionaries as Benjamin Bussey, who bequeathed his estate to Harvard College for what is now the Arnold Arboretum, and Henry A.S. Dearborn, the former mayor of Roxbury who established the Forest Hills Cemetery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Let Me Heal, prize-winning author Kenneth M. Ludmerer provides the first-ever account of the residency system for training doctors in the United States. He traces its development from its nineteenth-century roots through its present-day struggles to cope with new, bureaucratic work-hour regulations for house officers and, more important, to preserve excellence in medical training amid a highly commercialized health care system. Let Me Heal provides a highly engaging, richly contextualized account of the residency system in all its dimensions. It also brilliantly analyzes the mutual relationship between residency education and patient care in America. The book shows that the quality of residency training ultimately depends on the quality of patient care that residents observe, but that there is much that residency training can do to produce doctors who practice in a better, more affordable fashion. Let Me Heal is both a stunning work of scholarship and a highly engaging account of how one becomes a doctor in the United States. It is indispensable reading for those who wish to understand what it means to learn and practice medicine and what is needed to make medical education and patient care in America better. The definitive work on the subject, it is destined to become a classic that will be consulted by readers far into the future.

This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without new ways to think and manage itself strategically, academic healthcare faces terminal deterioration. Heightened competition and changing dynamics have brought turbulence to teaching hospitals, and the main impact has been financial. Langabeer and Napiewocki give health care executives the tools and concepts of strategic management they need and ways to strengthen analytic skills, all based on up-to-date empirical research, cast in language they can grasp and relate to, and specially tailored to help teaching hospital administrators cope successfully with today's marketplace challenges. Board members, trustees, and others with decision- and policy-making responsibilities will also find the book essential, as well as their teaching colleagues and students on their way up in the hospital industry. The authors maintain that if nonprofit teaching hospitals are to compete successfully with private for-profit hospital chains, not only must they learn the terrain of the playing fields, they must also learn how the game itself is played. Langabeer and Napiewocki offer that knowledge, and in doing so have written the first book of its kind to address comprehensively the entire realm of strategic management aimed clearly at teaching hospitals and major academic medical centers. With findings from primary empirical research into a large sample of teaching hospitals and focusing on the statistical relationships to economic performance, they provide crucial insights into why certain hospitals are more effective than others. Their book will also help healthcare executives relate strategy research on industrial organizations to their own teaching hospital environments. In doing so, their book fills a void in the literature on business strategy that for too long has caused consternation among healthcare administrators and aspirants alike.
