Book excerpt: Fatigue and fracture toughness properties were determined for STA60 precipitation hardening stainless steel used in the structure of the 105 mm Light Gun. Fatigue properties (S-N crack for initiation and crack growth rate) and fracture toughness were measured on both parent sheet and welded joints for a range of heat treatments including fully re-heat treated and peak aged (450 deg C), overaged as in production (530 deg C), and as-welded joints not re-heat treated. The material was found to be notch sensitive. Fatigue crack growth was much faster, and fracture toughness much lower, in the longitudinal (rolling) direction of sheet because of the presence of nonmetallic stringers in the microstructure. Overaging had little effect on fatigue properties compared with peak ageing, but did achieve a significant improvement in fracture toughness. Weld metal was more resistant to fatigue crack initiationn than parent sheet, but welds not re-heat treated were drastically limited in all three properties because the weld heat-affected zones remained in the soft condition.

Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) includes a diverse suite of innovative manufacturing processes for producing near-net shape components, typically from powder or wire feedstock. Reported mechanical properties of AM materials vary significantly depending on the details of the manufacturing process and the characteristics of the processing defects (namely, lack of fusion defects). However, an excellent combination of strength, ductility, and fracture resistance can be achieved in AM-type 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steels by minimizing processing defects. It is important to recognize that localized solidification processing during AM produces microstructures more analogous to weld microstructures than wrought microstructures. Consequently, the mechanical behavior of AM austenitic stainless steels in harsh environments can diverge from the performance of wrought materials. This report provides an overview of the fracture and fatigue response of type 304L materials from both directed energy deposition and powder bed fusion techniques. In particular, the mechanical performance of these materials is considered for high-pressure hydrogen applications by evaluating fatigue and fracture resistance after thermally precharging test specimens in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. The mechanical behaviors are considered with respect to previous reports on hydrogen-assisted fracture of austenitic stainless steel welds and the unique characteristics of the AM microstructures. Fatigue crack growth can be relatively insensitive to processing defects, displaying similar behavior as wrought materials. In contrast, fracture resistance of dense AM austenitic stainless steel is more consistent with weld metal than with compositionally similar wrought materials. Hydrogen effects in the AM materials generally are more severe than in wrought materials but are comparable to measurements on welded austenitic stainless steels in hydrogen environments. Although hydrogen-assisted fracture manifests differently in welded and AM austenitic stainless steel, the fracture process appears to have a common origin in the compositional microsegregation intrinsic to solidification processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.

Book excerpt: The resistance to fatigue crack growth of annealed stainless steels, Types 304, 316, 321, and 348, was determined at 77, 800, and 1100 F (25, 427, and 593 C). Crack growth rates were related to the stress intensity factor range (?K). With increase in temperature the rate of crack growth for a given (?K) increased. At room temperature the four steels had the same resistance to crack growth. However, at high temperatures crack growth became sensitive to the differences in composition and properties among the steels. At 1100 F (593 C), Type 348 steel had the greatest resistance to crack growth and Type 316 the lowest resistance. As a result, fatigue life was 3.4 times longer for Type 348 steel over Type 316 steel at this temperature. The characteristics of high-temperature fatigue crack growth were examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion-fatigue behavior of austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels, which combine high strength, good fracture toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance, is described in detail. The physical metallurgy of this class of alloys is reviewed so that the microstructure of different cast and wrought alloys can be understood in terms of alloy content, heat treatment, and cooling rate. The corrosion and stress corrosion cracking behaviors of duplex stainless steels are discussed and related to their corrosion-fatigue resistance. The results of recent work investigating the effects of various microstructural variables on corrosion-fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation in acidic chloride solution are described. The main structural variables are: volume fraction of austenite and ferrite, microstructural orientation of the different phases, embrittling intermetallic precipitates, and grain boundary carbides. An attempt is made to describe the microstructural features which will give the best corrosion-fatigue resistance in austenitic-ferritic stainless steels.

Book excerpt: Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. It fills a knowledge gap in the interrelationships of multiple microstructural and deformation mechanisms by applying the concepts and tools of designing microstructures for achieving combinations of engineering properties—such as strength, corrosion resistance, durability and damage tolerance in multi-component materials—used for critical structural applications. - Discusses the science behind the properties and performance of advanced metallic materials - Provides for the efficient design of materials and processes to satisfy targeted performance in materials and structures - Enables the selection and development of new alloys for specific applications based upon evaluation of their microstructure as illustrated in this work
