Book excerpt: This first volume from the series introduces the structural failure and fatigue dimensioning problems, addressing the basic properties of structural materials and the effects of stress concentration at notches. It is also devoted to the nominal stress vs. fatigue life approach, through the SN method and welded joint codes, for high-cycle problems characterized by nominally elastic behavior where load levels are low enough to neglect local plasticity at the crack initiation location. This volume contains as well appendices with representative mechanical properties and estimates for several structural materials, in addition to numerous stress concentration factor equations.

Book excerpt: This second volume of the series describes strain-life approaches through the eN method, used when local plasticity at notch tips, where fatigue cracks typically originate, requires that the analysis follow the stress-strain behavior on a cycle-by-cycle basis. Such a low-cycle approach takes into account the elastoplastic material response, obtained from uniaxial stress-strain relations or multiaxial incremental plasticity calculations, including notch effects. Crack initiation under multiaxial non-proportional loads is also thoroughly discussed, with fatigue life predictions based either on high-cycle or low-cycle damage models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a selection of papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Fatigue Design, Fatigue Design 1998, held in Espoo, Finland, 26-29 May, 1998. One objective of this symposium series was to help bridge the gap that sometimes exists between researchers and engineers responsible for designing components against fatigue failure. The 21 selected papers provide an up-to-date survey of engineering practice and a preview of design methods that are advancing toward application. Reliability was selected as a key theme for FD'98. During the design of components and structures, it is not sufficient to combine mean material properties, average usage parameters, and pre-selected safety factors. The engineer must also consider potential scatter in material properties, different end users, manufacturing tolerances and uncertainties in fatigue damage models. Judgement must also be made about the consequences of potential failure and the required degree of reliability for the structure or component during its service life. Approaches to ensuring reliability may vary greatly depending on the structure being designed. Papers in this volume intentionally provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the issue. Authors represent the ground vehicle, heavy equipment, power generation, ship building and other industries. Identical solutions cannot be used in all cases because design methods must always provide a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The point of balance will shift depending on the type of input data available and the component being considered.

Book excerpt: Modern analytical theories of fatigue coupled with a knowledge of processing effects on metals make up the sound basis for designing machine parts that are free from unexpected failure. Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts provides the information and the tools needed for optimal design. It highlights practical approaches for effectively solving fatigue problems, including minimizing the risk of hidden perils that may arise during production processes or from exposure to the environment. The material is presented with a dual approach: the excellent coverage of the theoretical aspects is accented by practical illustrations of the behavior of machine parts. The theoretical approach combines the fundamentals of solid mechanics, fatigue analysis, and crack propagation. The chapters covering fatigue theories are given special emphasis, starting with the basics and progressing to complicated multiaxial nonlinear problems. The practical approach concentrates on the effects of surface processing on fatigue life and it illustrates many faceted fatigue problems taken from case studies. The solutions demonstrate the authors' detailed analyses of failure and are intended to be used as preventive guidelines. The cases are a unique feature of the book. The numerical method used is the finite element method, and is presented with clear explanations and illustrations.Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts is an extremely valuable tool for both practicing design engineers and engineering students.

Book excerpt: Fatigue Testing and Analysis: Theory and Practice presents the latest, proven techniques for fatigue data acquisition, data analysis, and test planning and practice. More specifically, it covers the most comprehensive methods to capture the component load, to characterize the scatter of product fatigue resistance and loading, to perform the fatigue damage assessment of a product, and to develop an accelerated life test plan for reliability target demonstration. This book is most useful for test and design engineers in the ground vehicle industry. Fatigue Testing and Analysis introduces the methods to account for variability of loads and statistical fatigue properties that are useful for further probabilistic fatigue analysis. The text incorporates and demonstrates approaches that account for randomness of loading and materials, and covers the applications and demonstrations of both linear and double-linear damage rules. The reader will benefit from summaries of load transducer designs and data acquisition techniques, applications of both linear and non-linear damage rules and methods, and techniques to determine the statistical fatigue properties for the nominal stress-life and the local strain-life methods. Covers the useful techniques for component load measurement and data acquisition, fatigue properties determination, fatigue analysis, and accelerated life test criteria development, and, most importantly, test plans for reliability demonstrations Written from a practical point of view, based on the authors' industrial and academic experience in automotive engineering design Extensive practical examples are used to illustrate the main concepts in all chapters

Therefore, in order to produce durable products against fatigue and to prevent catastrophic failures it is essential to develop feasible fatigue design methods as well as understand the fatigue phenomenon and its micro-mechanisms. This book covers leading-edge research on fundamental areas of fatigue. The topics addressed include reliability-based design techniques, fatigue life prediction approaches, damage-tolerant design for thermo-mechanical fatigue, fatigue crack growth rate models, fatigue behaviour of short cracks, and microstructure and geometric effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combined analytical and experimental program was conducted in order to develop a semi-empirical sonic fatigue design method for curved and flat graphite-epoxy skin-stringer panels. A range of multi-bay panels was subjected to high intensity noise environments in a progressive-wave tube. Shaker tests were also performed in order to provide additional random fatigue data. Finite- element analyses were carried out on the test panel designs, generating static strains and frequencies. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to develop the sonic fatigue design method. Design equations and a nomograph are presented. Comparisons of sonic fatigue resistance between graphite and aluminum panels were also carried out. The design method developed is presented as a self-contained section in this report and is suitable for practical design use.

This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the fatigue behaviour of structural components under variable load amplitude is an essential prerequisite for safe and reliable light-weight design. For designing and dimensioning, the expected stress (load) is compared with the capacity to withstand loads (fatigue strength). In this process, the safety necessary for each particular application must be ensured. A prerequisite for ensuring the required fatigue strength is a reliable load assumption. The authors describe the transformation of the stress- and load-time functions which have been measured under operational conditions to spectra or matrices with the application of counting methods. The aspects which must be considered for ensuring a reliable load assumption for designing and dimensioning are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the theoretical background for estimating the fatigue life of structural components is explained, and the procedures are discussed for numerous applications in practice. One of the prime intentions of the authors is to provide recommendations which can be implemented in practical applications.
