This book was released on 1999 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two full-scale prestressed concrete box girders with identical properties were tested. The loads were placed so that shear rather than flexure would govern failure. The first girder was tested to evaluate ultimate shear strength under monotonic loading. The second girder was subjected to one-half million cycles of repeated loading and nine static overloads before its ultimate strength test. The results indicated that the effect of repeated loading on the shear strength of a shear dominated girder is less significant than that of a flexure dominated girder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of fracture and fatigue have produced a huge body of research work in relation to applications to metal materials and structures. However, a variety of non-metallic materials (e.g., concrete and cementitious composites, rocks, glass, ceramics, bituminous mixtures, composites, polymers, rubber and soft matter, bones and biological materials, and advanced and multifunctional materials) have received relatively less attention, despite their attractiveness for a large spectrum of applications related to the components and structures of diverse engineering branches, applied sciences and architecture, and to the load-carrying systems of biological organisms. This book covers the broad topic of structural integrity of non-metallic materials, considering the modelling, assessment, and reliability of structural elements of any scale. Original contributions from engineers, mechanical materials scientists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians are presented, applying both experimental and theoretical approaches.

Book excerpt: Two full-size AASHTO prestressed concrete girders, one Type III and one Type V, were tested for fatigue resistance. Both girders were impaired by transverse cracks in their top flanges near the midspan and the cracks extended well into the web of each girder. Each girder was subjected to one million cycles of service load and 2,500 cycles of intermittent overload as if the girder were made composite with a cast-in-place bridge deck. The overload was equivalent to 75% of the ultimate capacity of the composite girder. Prior to the fatigue test, each girder was tested beyond its cracking load to create flexural cracks in its tension flange. After the fatigue loadings, the girders were tested to failure to determine their ultimate load capacities. Analytical studies were also conducted to model the behavior of the girders by using two separate computer programs, one called Cracked Beam and the other Response 2000.

This book focuses on the durability problems of existing prestressed concrete (PC) structures caused by strand corrosion, clarifies the mechanical behavior of corroded prestressing strands, corrosion-induced cracking, bond degradation, prestress loss and structural performance deterioration, and proposes the corresponding prediction models. Its aim is to provide the knowledge, tools, and methods to understand the deterioration phenomena of PC structures. We hope that this text may be useful for those who work in the field of civil engineering. It is suitable for teachers and students majoring in civil engineering in universities, and researchers in the field of civil engineering. It is also suitable for practitioners of design institutes, construction units, supervising units and traffic management departments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent field applications and research findings have demonstrated the effectiveness of concrete-filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes (CFFT) as an efficient and promising hybrid system for designing main components such as pier columns, girders and piles for a bridge system. The vision was to provide a cost-competitive unified system composed of FRP/concrete hybrid members, which may act as a viable alternative to conventional reinforced and prestressed concrete structural systems. To achieve their broad-based implementation in civil infrastructure, understanding of their behavior and developing analytical tools under full spectrum of primary and secondary load demands are essential. Response characterizations under primary load demands namely, axial compression, flexural and axial-flexural, and seismic loadings have already been reported. However, investigations under primary shear and secondary fatigue load demands remain to be addressed. The present study consists of two phases. In the first phase, an experimental and analytical investigation was undertaken to characterize the behavior of a CFFT beam. Study on shear was primarily focused on the deep beam behavior. Comparisons of behavior of deep, short and slender beams were also highlighted. A strut-and-tie model approach, pertinent to analysis of deep reinforced and prestressed concrete members, was proposed to predict the shear strength of deep CFFT beams. Prediction showed good agreement with test results. It was concluded that shear failure mode is only critical for beams with shear span less than their depth. In the second phase, a detailed study on flexural fatigue behavior and modeling was undertaken. The main objective was to evaluate the performance of beams under four basic criteria; i) damage accumulation ii) stiffness degradation, iii) number of cycles to failure, and iv) reserve bending strength. Effects of laminate fiber architecture, reinforcement index, load range, and end restraint on the.
