Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to improve the material performance of a graphite/epoxy prepreg composite with particular relevence to its fatigue performance. Fatigue strength and resistance to fatigue damage of Modmor II/ Narmco 5206 composite were improved by interleaving the composite prepreg laminate with glass scrim cloth. Cantilever beam specimens of two fiber orientations were tested under uniform stress fatigue and sequential block loading. Flexural strength studies and the effects of ambient aging of composites on their elevated temperature properties are reported. Besides ambient aging the investigation also included accelerated aging tests on laminates of two different fiber orientations with and without interleaving of scrim cloth. Improvement in the mechanical behavior of graphite/epoxy prepreg composite was obtained with the addition of glass scrim cloth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite/epoxy composites are being applied to aircraft structures because of their demonstrated capability to reduce weight and increase life. Although composites have better fatigue properties than metals, their behavior differs significantly. Unlike metals, composites exhibit excellent tensile fatigue behavior--the constant amplitude fatigue strength at 107 cycles being close to static ultimate. Compression and reversed loading fatigue behavior in the presence of stress raisers, however, has not been well characterized. This program was therefore undertaken to determine the characteristics of composites under these conditions. Two stress raisers were considered; the first was an open hole and the second was damage resulting from low velocity, hard object impact.

Book excerpt: The advanced composite materials possess characteristics of stiffness and strength which are most desirable for advanced naval aircraft. Glass composite materials, on the other hand, possess the equally desirable characteristic of low cost. The appropriate combination of these many features can be obtained by a suitable blending of the two or more composite materials. Technically, the blending of two or more fiber types in a laminate, can be achieved by (1) mixing the fibers in the tow or roving, (2) intra-ply mixing of glass rovings with graphite tows or, (3) interleaving or interply mixing of two separate fibrous prepreg systems or any combination of the above. There are additional economic advantages to the third approach where prepreg tapes with a common resin system are prepared for two separate fibers: glass and graphite. For this reason the third approach was selected for some further study particularly with regard to the fatigue performance and its relative behavior to prior studies of the separate composites. The specific objective of the program was to utilize a commercially available glass and a commercially available high strength and high modulus graphite with a common epoxy matrix to maximize the technical performance of the hybrid composite in fatigue applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off-axis static and fatigue behavior of AS/3501-5A graphite/epoxy was studied in an effort to characterize the matrix/interface-controlled failure. Seven different off-axis angles were tested: 0, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, and 90 deg. Initial (static) and post-fatigue residual strength were obtained together with S-N relationships. Fracture surfaces were examined through photomicrographs and stereo (three-dimensional) scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs, in order to delineate failure modes, and the results of these inspections are discussed. The off-axis static strength, including scatter, was fully characterized by a polynomial and a nondimensional strength parameter. Essentially, no strength or modulus degradation was observed in the specimens surviving fatigue loading of 106 cycles regardless of the off-axis angle or fatigue stress level. When fatigue stress level is normalized with respect to static strength, all data seem to fall on the same S-N curve. Fatigue failure occurred without any warning or visible damage. Matrix failure characteristics vary with off-axis angle and appear in the form of serrations and axial and transverse cracks. Large scatter in life was observed at all off-axis angles; however, since the number of specimens employed in the present study is not sufficient to provide meaningful statistical S-N data, a more detailed investigation of the off-axis (and angle ply) behavior of graphite/epoxy composites is warranted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of aluminum alloy-graphite fiber composite materials prepared by liquid-metal infiltration was determined over a range of cycle life from 10 to 10 to the 8th power to establish the S/N curve and the mechanisms of fatigue. The matrix materials included aluminum alloys 6061 and 201; they were infiltrated into Thornel 50 graphite fiber from the melt, which resulted in about a 30-vol% fiber composite. The specimens were of circular cross section with a minimum diameter of approx. 4mm. The experimental conditions included sinusoidal loading at room temperature with a stress ratio of 0.1 and cyclic frequencies ranging from 10 to 30 Hz. The S/N behavior of these materials is compared with prepared by hot-pressing. The S/N curves for all aluminum composites other composite fatigue data reported in the literature, including 6061 A1-25% boron and aluminum-graphite composites compared are more or less parallel in the range from 100000 to 10 to the 7th power cycles. The fatigue strength of the 6061 alloy-graphite composite produced by liquid-metal infiltration is approx. 13% greater than the 201 alloy composite and 50% greater than the hot-pressed aluminum-graphite composite. Scanning electron fractography of the fracture surfaces indicates the fatigue fracture mode depends upon the stress level in the composite and is controlled by initiation and propagation of cracks within the matrix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of multidirectional graphite-epoxy laminates is examined and analyzed in terms of the single lamina behavior. The nonlinear viscoelastic moduli of the epoxy matrix are changed with temperature and thus the characteristics of the laminae are altered. As a result, the static and fatigue strengths of a laminate are changed due to the redistribution of the stress field in the laminate and the weakening effect of temperature on the matrix. The fatigue behavior of a single lamina is characterized by its static strength and its "fatigue function" that expresses the degradation in the strength of the lamina due to cyclic loading. The effect of temperature is introduced through the use of "shifting factors" for both the static strength and the "fatigue function." The laminate strength is predicted by considering the cyclic stress field in each lamina, the interlaminar stresses, and the experimentally determined shifting factors. The first failure of a lamina in a laminate is examined first in terms of stress redistribution and second in terms of total failure and final laminate fracture. The analytically determined results are compared with the actual fatigue behavior of many T300/5208 graphite-epoxy composite laminates. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The temperature "shifting factors" enable one to predict long-term behavior at some temperature from short-time testing at elevated temperatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the behavior of graphite/epoxy composite plates under a shear loading condition has been performed. The region above the critical buckling load was of particular interest. Both the static and fatigue behavior of post-buckled plates was studied. Following an existing design, a special test frame has been constructed which applies this shear loading to a 200mm square test area. A comparison between the experimental and theoretical critical buckling load shows good agreement for the laminated plate analysis static failure occurred at about four times the buckling load. The modes of failure are.discussed. Fatigue tests were also conducted, but they were merely of a preliminary nature. A more comprehensive study would be valuable. To this end, suggestions are made for improvement of the frame design and operation.

Book excerpt: Two ternary composite material systems, PR 286/Modmor II/Graphite/S-Glass and PR 286/ HMS Graphite/S-Glass, involving two types of lamination fabrications, namely uniformly distributed interply hybrids and core-shell hybrids, were investigated. The test program included static tests, tensile fatigue tests, shear fatigue tests, modulus degradation studies and microscopic examination. The study shows that hybrid composites perform generally satisfactorily in fatigue and will survive rigorous stress cycling. Distributed interply hybrids show a better mechanical performance than core- shell hybrids. The mechanical behavior of hybrid composites generally follows the rule of mixtures and the rule of mixtures can be used to predict elastic moduli of hybrids. The performance (as a percentage of the fatigue strength at any given life) of 1:1 graphite/glass/epoxy relative to pure HMS GRAPHITE IS BETTER THAN THAT OF 1:1 HTS Graphite/glass/epoxy relative to pure HTS GRAPHITE/EPOXY.
