Book Synopsis Aquinas and the Market by : Mary L. Hirschfeld
Download or read book Aquinas and the Market written by Mary L. Hirschfeld and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists and theologians usually inhabit different intellectual worlds. Economists investigate the workings of markets and tend to set ethical questions aside. Theologians, anxious to take up concerns raised by market outcomes, often dismiss economics and lose insights into the influence of market incentives on individual behavior. Mary L. Hirschfeld, who was a professor of economics for fifteen years before training as a theologian, seeks to bridge these two fields in this innovative work about economics and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. According to Hirschfeld, an economics rooted in Thomistic thought integrates many of the insights of economists with a larger view of the good life, and gives us critical purchase on the ethical shortcomings of modern capitalism. In a Thomistic approach, she writes, ethics and economics cannot be reconciled if we begin with narrow questions about fair wages or the acceptability of usury. Rather, we must begin with an understanding of how economic life serves human happiness. The key point is that material wealth is an instrumental good, valuable only to the extent that it allows people to flourish. Hirschfeld uses that insight to develop an account of a genuinely humane economy in which pragmatic and material concerns matter but the pursuit of wealth for its own sake is not the ultimate goal. The Thomistic economics that Hirschfeld outlines is thus capable of dealing with our culture as it is, while still offering direction about how we might make the economy better serve the human good.
Book Synopsis The Church of Christ by : E. Sylvester Berry STD
Download or read book The Church of Christ written by E. Sylvester Berry STD and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present volume, being the outgrowth of lectures delivered in the classroom, was originally written in Latin with the intention of supplying a textbook suited to the needs of those beginning the study of theology in our seminaries. . . . It is hoped that the detailed explanations and the simplicity of language will render the work intelligible and useful to a large portion of the laity. "With the exception of the Sacraments, there is, perhaps, no subject of more practical interest to clergy and laity alike than that of the Church, yet there are few works in English treating the subject in full. The author trusts that he has made some contribution in this matter by giving a connected and rather detailed account of the origin, constitution, and powers of the Church from the dogmatic as well as from the apologetic point of view." -From the Introduction
Book Synopsis The Dictator Pope by : Marcantonio Colonna
Download or read book The Dictator Pope written by Marcantonio Colonna and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcantonio Colonna's The Dictator Pope has rocked Rome and the entire Catholic Church with its portrait of an authoritarian, manipulative, and politically partisan pontiff. Occupying a privileged perch in Rome during the tumultuous first years of Francis’s pontificate, Colonna was privy to the shock, dismay, and even panic that the reckless new pope engendered in the Church’s most loyal and judicious leaders. The Dictator Pope discloses that Father Mario Bergoglio (the future Pope Francis) was so unsuited for ecclesiastical leadership that the head of his own Jesuit order tried to prevent his appointment as a bishop in Argentina. Behind the benign smile of the "people's pope" Colonna reveals a ruthless autocrat aggressively asserting the powers of the papacy in pursuit of a radical agenda.

Book excerpt: "Pope Gregory XVII has spent a lifetime quietly serving the Church he loves-until he announces a prophecy so alarming that it threatens to tear the Vatican apart. Terrified, the Vatican cardinals imprison him in a monastery. Is he mad, as they believe, or is it all an elaborate plot? An old friend of the pope sets out on a risky quest to find out. On the way, he discovers the power of love and faith, while terrorists and politicians use every deadly and unholy means to stop him. The Clowns of God spent twenty-two weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and is the second novel in Morris West's Vatican trilogy. West is a skillful storyteller who knows how to build suspense into every twist of the plot. The Christian Science Monitor An engrossing tale that keeps you reading impatiently all the way through. Download or read book Benedict XVI written by Estefanía Acosta and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-02-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What does it mean to be loyal to the Pope, if we do not consider ourselves obliged to know who the true Pope is?" "For the purpose of knowing who the true Pope is." This is what Benedict XVI: Pope "Emeritus"?, by the Master in Law of the University of Medellin, Estefanía Acosta, helps to answer, by addressing, in light of divine and ecclesiastical law, the still current (and greatest) impasse suffered by the Papacy at the gates of its bimillenial existence. A basilar and indispensable instrument for understanding Benedict XVI's declaration of resignation and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio's election, as well as their later developments, this work, the most complete study of canon law on the subject, has as one of its great merits that of helping so that, with Saint John Bosco, the cry Long live the Pope! may resound. Certainly, a hot topic, like our times, especially for all those who in spirit and truth are interested in God, the Church and the Papacy.

Book Synopsis Preparation for Death by : Alphonsus Liguori
Download or read book Preparation for Death written by Alphonsus Liguori and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual of devotion consists of a series of chapters or instructions upon important points of Christian teaching which Saint Alphonsus calls "Considerations". As the Saint describes, "These Considerations are written for the purpose of pricking or of wounding the conscience... that so it may be thoroughly aroused and awakened." The Considerations deal with such doctrines and facts as have a universal application, which admit of no dispute, and which are always confirmed by some passage from Holy Scripture. Preparation for Death is essentially a guide to prayer. It represents, from its beginning to its end, the continual outpouring of heart before God, an outpouring that is at times expressed in the very same words which imply a new phase of thought. Regarded as a Manual of Mental Prayer, each of these "Considerations" has a technical and special signification. They treat of life and death, the value of time, the mercy of God, the habit of sin, the general and particular judgments, the love of God, Holy Communion, and other subjects equally important.
