Book excerpt: The Founding of the American Republic is on trial. Critics say it was a poison pill with a time-release formula; we are its victims. Its principles are responsible for the country's moral and social disintegration because they were based on the Enlightenment falsehood of radical individual autonomy. In this well-researched book, Robert Reilly declares: not guilty. To prove his case, he traces the lineage of the ideas that made the United States, and its ordered liberty, possible. These concepts were extraordinary when they first burst upon the ancient world: the Judaic oneness of God, who creates ex nihilo and imprints his image on man; the Greek rational order of the world based upon the Reason behind it; and the Christian arrival of that Reason (Logos) incarnate in Christ. These may seem a long way from the American Founding, but Reilly argues that they are, in fact, its bedrock. Combined, they mandated the exercise of both freedom and reason. These concepts were further developed by thinkers in the Middle Ages, who formulated the basic principles of constitutional rule. Why were they later rejected by those claiming the right to absolute rule, then reclaimed by the American Founders, only to be rejected again today? Reilly reveals the underlying drama: the conflict of might makes right versus right makes might. America's decline, he claims, is not to be discovered in the Founding principles, but in their disavowal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Father Ignatius of St. Paul: Passionist, (the Hon.& Rev. George Spencer); Compiled Chiefly From His Autobiography, Journal,& Letters Great servants of God have seldom been understood in their lifetime. Persecution has assailed them often, from quarters where help would be expected in their defence. Even holy souls are sometimes mistaken about the particular line of virtue which distinguishes their contemporaries from themselves. St. John of the Cross, St. Joseph Calasanctius, and St. Alphonsus Liguori, have had the close of their lives embittered, as we might call it, by domestic persecution; and it was some time before their splendour, as they vanished from the horizon of life, rose again to its zenith, and outshone its former glory. If the impartial eye, with which we read their actions, fails to find a plea for the manner they have been dealt with, let us remember that we have no interests at stake - no false colouring of passion to blind us. Death, indeed, does not always mow down mistaken notions with the life of him about whom they are taken up. B: The Monk of Llanthony Now we have received, not the spirit of the World, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things which are freely given to us of God. As to the supernatural events recorded, I desire to say that whether the reader believes the statements regarding them or does not believe them, it is no concern of mine. I simply give them to the Author because I believe it is our Lord's will and for His glory that I should do so. People will believe them or not as they are taught of God. I have not knowingly mis-stated or over-stated these things, which at all events I myself regard as wonderful works of God. The time has come to give my witness respecting them, and The God and Father Of our Lord Jesus Christ knoweth that I lie not. By this book may our Lord permit that His Most Holy Name may be glorified, many of His people co forted, and that many who sit in darkness may see the Great Light of His Peace, and the supreme Joy of His Salvation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Timothy D. Carroll unveils God as the source of being and integrating all the components of life, demonstrating the essential connection points within humanity's relationship to the divine, as portrayed within a matrix. Presenting God as the universal Father of humanity, he explains the significance of both the divine logos, where God is seen face-to-face with himself, and the humanity of the divine. Timothy does this all while keeping the reader mindful of his own origin, identity, and destiny. The unique blending of the spiritual and the theological makes this book profoundly accessible to both the young in faith and those who are mature, from the idea of a spiritual matrix to insights into the doctrine of hell, while closing the book with his own ninety-five theses on universal reconciliation and love.

Book excerpt: St. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the "God-bearer," is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus Himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1-4). In Bearing God, Fr. Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern reader five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch The call for a fresh edition of this little book, which is now set tip in a new form, has rendered necessary a more thorough revision of the introduction and notes than was possible in preparing it for the second edition. In the eighteen years which have elapsed since its first appearance new light has been thrown on many of the questions dealt with. Several of the notes have been te-written and also certain sections of the introduction. A new Additional Note, in place of the original Add. Note 2, has been inserted, in which the question of the Christian Ministry has been more fully dealt with. On the other hand, a few curtailments have been made elsewhere. In other respects the present edition is a reprint of the earlier edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
