Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the 53 stories of Father Brown, the beloved character created by English novelist G. K. Chesterton, who stars in 51 detective short stories (and two framing vignettes). Chesterton based the character on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922. Father Brown is a short, stumpy Roman Catholic Church priest, "formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London", with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. Unlike the more famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. This volume contains ALL OF FATHER BROWN STORIES, included the three stories left out of most collections: "The Donnington Affair" "The Vampire of the Village" "The Mask of Midas" . The following is the list of Father Brown stories included in this volume: 1. Book excerpt: G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown may seem a pleasantly doddering Roman Catholic priest, but appearances deceive. With keen observation and an unerring sense of man’s frailties–gained during his years listening to confessions–Father Brown succeeds in bringing even the most elusive criminals to justice. This definitive collection of fifteen stories, selected by the American Chesterton Society, includes such classics as “The Blue Cross,” “The Secret Garden,” and “The Paradise of Thieves.” As P. D. James writes in her Introduction, “We read the Father Brown stories for a variety pleasures, including their ingenuity, their wit and intelligence, and for the brilliance of the writing. But they provide more. Chesterton was concerned with the greatest of all problems, the vagaries of the human heart.”

Martin Hewitt is an ex lawyer's assistant who eventually found his inclination better suited to crime investigation. He is a low-key, realistic, lower class answer to Sherlock Holmes, though his cases are just as weird and mysterious as Holmes's. Martin Hewitt stories are similar in style to those of Arthur Conan Doyle, cleverly plotted and very amusing, while the character himself is a bit less arrogant and a bit more charming than Holmes. Arthur Morrison (1863-1945) was an English writer and journalist known for his realistic novels and stories about working-class life in London's East End, and for his detective stories, featuring Martin Hewitt and Horace Dorrington. Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel". Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits". She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green's innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews", the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ANNIE HAYNES Premium Collection – 8 Golden Age Mysteries in One Volume (Crime & Suspense Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Annie Haynes (1865-1929) was a renowned golden age mystery writer and a contemporary of Agatha Christie, another famous crime writer, which often led to her comparison with the latter, and unfavourably so. In her last years, while suffering from a "grave illness" Haynes continued to produce her mystery masterpieces (12 in total) amongst which "The Crime at Tattenham Corner" was published posthumously and "The Crystal Beads Murder" was completed by an anonymous friend. Haynes's fictions are now lauded for their quick-pace action and sustaining aura of suspense till the end. Table of Contents: The Abbey Court Murder The Blue Diamond The House in Charlton Crescent The Crow's Inn Tragedy The Man with the Dark Beard Who Killed Charmian Karslake? The Crime at Tattenham Corner The Crystal Beads Murder

Book excerpt: Gilbert Keith (G.K.) Chesterton, (1874 1936) was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist, often referred to as the "prince of paradox." His best known character, Father Brown is an amateur sleuth, created in the early 1900s, and loosely based by Chesterton on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.Unlike the better known fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. This book includes all the 53 stories (novels and short stories) Chesterton wrote of this character.
