Book excerpt: Brutal, fast-paced, impressively observed; This novel, which is the story of a man’s identity struggle with an event of social unrest; Set in a fertile valley where a strike of migrant workers against greedy landlords is spiraling out of control. Andy Davies, once a purposeless man who finds himself on strike, briefly becomes the leader of the strike and is eventually crushed in his service. A principled challenge will come at a heavy price. This novel, which opposes the acceptance of life as it is; It deals with both the exuberance of the community and the loneliness of the individual. The author, based on his memoirs; he intertwines the trade of workers, exploitation of labor, resistance, solidarity, the stories of the characters and creates a single novel at the same time. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, a man’s violent reaction to injustice, the novel bears witness to a great horror that shakes the foundations of equality and justice. A harsh yet captivating novel about people living on the fringes of society who depend on each other for survival, both physically and emotionally.

This new book - an analysis of the impact of oil wealth on tropical deforestation in South America, Africa and Asia - takes a much more analytical approach than the usual fare of environmental studies. The focus on economies as a whole leads to a more balanced view than those that are often put forward and therefore, vitally, a view that is more valid. Of use to those who study environmental issues and economics, this book is potentially an indispensable tool for policy-makers the world over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday problems associated with the consequences of alcohol use disorders require answers, and it is for this reason Forensic Alcohol Test Evidence (FATE) was written. Forensic alcohol test evidence focuses on the evaluation, interpretation and application of the effects of alcohol or an alcohol test result to some legal issue such as a crime, accident or consequence of alcohol exposure. In FATE, many of the issues pertinent to a thorough forensic evaluation and trial testimony are discussed, but most importantly is the focus on consistent, unbiased, and comprehensive application of diverse scientific disciplines and research to questions of forensic interest. This requires evaluating behavioral, analytical, physiological, pharmacological and toxicological evidence in the puzzle; determining if the pieces go together; and reaching a conclusion to a reasonable degree of scientific certainty. The first chapter discusses what is forensic alcohol test evidence and why it is studied. Chapter 2 explores forensic alcohol evidence and what are the types of alcohol and quantitative expression of blood alcohol. Chapter 3 examines alcohol pharmacokinetics, alcohol pharmacodynamics site of alcohol action, and basic neurophysiology. Neuropharmacology of alcohol intoxication is also discussed. Chapter 4 covers laboratory and clinical-based tests of impairment. In Chapter 5, DWI high-risk behaviors and injuries are discussed. Chapter 6 defines alcohol and the law: drunk driving, visible intoxication, and aggression, while Chapter 7 covers the DWI investigation and arrest, elements of the DWI report, outside vehicle test, and obtaining blood samples. Chapters 8 and 9 describe alcohol-drug interactions and medical consequences and toxicological considerations. Chapters 10 and 11 pursue alcohol use, tolerance, dependence, and the need for standardization and estimating blood alcohol levels. The remaining two chapters cover accident reconstruction and neuropsychology. This book will be an essential tool and valuable resource for all law enforcement officers and investigators, forensic examiners and other professionals in the evaluation and interpretation of alcohol evidence in crimes and accidents.

Book excerpt: This book explores the understanding of freedom developed in the later novels of celebrated Canadian author, David Adams Richards. Many reviewers highlight two interconnected features in Richards novels: a seemingly rigid determinism of setting and sociodemographics, and a resulting hopelessness. In contrast, Richards describes the quest of human life and the purpose of his novels as a search for freedom. This book explores the account of freedom that is developed through the course of four of Richards’s works: The Friends of Meager Fortune, Mercy Among the Children, The Lost Highway, and Crimes Against My Brother. Following the Augustinian thread that informs Richards’s writing, we argue that rather than presenting an understanding of human life that is bleak or hopeless, Richards instead reveals an argument wherein one’s happiness and freedom is found in the midst of love.

Book excerpt: This is a fascinating collection of stories revealing compassion, mystery, humor and warmth, written by people from various walks of life as they tell about their personal brush with FATE. A computer engineer experiences the touch of the unknown as he learns that the plane he was scheduled to be on has crashed into the World Trade Center. A father and daughter, trying to escape from war-torn Egypt, lose something very precious, but find it in such an incredible way that they are sure Fate has favored them. A woman from India relates the strange way in which she is given a Genasha God statue that has been blessed by a revered Swami. The stories evoke the texture of life in an elegant yet gentle mosaic that confirms the unseen hand of fate touching all our lives. This book is about all different kinds of Fate. The common thread is that each story raises the question: "Was that just a coincidence-or was it meant to be?" www.theramp.net/auslander.

How many of us have found this to be true is unknown. Anyone reading this story will find out that in the most critical moments in my life, something happened that held any further hope in this enterprise. I hope some feeling of resignation and acceptance will comfort you. Things will be as they are to be. Edwin Hood

She's always believed in love at first sight and had feelings of the future, though never for herself. Finding out she's a witch with a vampire soulmate is exciting, but everything is ripped away before she gets a chance to experience it. With no memory of what the Spider Mage did to her, she's stuck in limbo with no way out. Idris promised his dying sister that he would look after her descendants. At the time, he was human — neither of them could have known how long that promise would last. Thousands of years later, he's finally found his Dragă, just when one of his descendants needs his help. But, Musette needs him, too. Will he have to choose? A Dragă is meant to make a vampire's heart beat and restore his soul — but what if the poison caused permanent damage, and they can never bond? This is a sexy, soulmate novel with no cheating, fade to blacks, or cliffhangers. It's a fast-paced story that blends romance, mythology, humor, and adventure. I promise, after some scary moments and lunacy, that there will always be a happy ending. Each story in the series focuses on one couple, and can be read as a standalone novel.

So says Wes Holloway, a young presidential aide, about the day he put Ron Boyle, the chief executive's oldest friend, into the president's limousine. By the trip's end, a crazed assassin would permanently disfigure Wes and kill Boyle. Now, eight years later, Boyle has been spotted alive. Trying to figure out what really happened takes Wes back into disturbing secrets buried in Freemason history, a decade-old presidential crossword puzzle, and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson that conceals secrets worth dying for.
