Book excerpt: There’s nothing beautiful about becoming a monster… From USA Today Bestselling author A. M. Yates, the complete Soul of a Vampire series in one boxed set. When I saw my sister dead on the living room floor, I wasn't thinking anything except that I couldn't handle losing anybody else. I begged Rafe to turn her. Like all vampires, Rafe’s a liar. A murderer. A monster. But he loved her as much as I did. In hindsight, it was selfish. I didn't think about what it would mean for Ennis; how it would change her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old prophet of Bethel lies to the man of God from Judah, only to lead him to disobey God's command and to die as a result. The man of God is killed for disobedience, while the old prophet lives on and eventually even benefits from the death (2 Kgs 23:18). Why did God punish his prophet who was deceived, not the one who deceived? The text keeps silent about this as well as about the motive of the old prophet's lying. This strange story takes up a big portion of the Jeroboam narrative (1 Kgs 11-14). For what purpose would the narrator have included the story in his coverage of Israel's history during the reign of King Jeroboam? Does this story have any relevance to the rise and fall of the first king of the northern kingdom? If so, how? As it untangles the difficult details of the story, this book reveals the narrator's perspective on the way God intervened in the history of Israel and focuses on the suffering that God's prophets sometimes had to undergo as bearers of God's words.

Book excerpt: What happens on the Island... Stays on the Island. Horizon Island is a sleepy, little fishing community off the coast of Maine. In the summer, tourists flock to its picturesque wharf and explore its beautiful hiking trails. In the winter, the locals board up their shops and fight shape-shifting monsters. Of course, this isn't in the brochures. They are Clan, a magical warrior race. And they are the only ones keeping the mysterious and murderous Terrors from overrunning the world. Nicia Silverthread doesn’t live on the Island, but she knows the truth about the Clan. She’s the daughter of an outcast. Although she has magic within her, she’s no warrior. But when she learns her grandma is dying, Nicia is determined to see her one last time. Sneaking back onto the Island is easy, but to leave...? All she has to do is break a few magically bound contracts, destroy a Terror unlike any other, catch a murderer before they strike again, find a flower on a mountain not-quite-of-this-world, and stop herself from falling for a fiance she never wanted in the first place. Definitely not in the brochure. Book excerpt: This narrative critical study offers a bold and comprehensive analysis of the relationship between David and Saul's heirs. Tushima inquires into whether Saulides' tragedies were due to continuing divine retribution, pure happenstance, or David orchestration. Focusing on the story of David and its interconnections with the fate of the Saulides, and employing the criterion of justice, the author presents the other side of King David, who is generally depicted as hero. Tushima argues that David was, most often, unjust and calculating in his dealings with the vanquished house of Saule. Thematic and motific threads arising from this study are considered within their contexts in Israel's traditions for their biblical-theological and redemptive-historical import.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course of events is predetermined and cannot be changed. Forces beyond our control—or even our comprehension—shape our fates. Such is the deterministic worldview embedded in a wide swath of contemporary cinema, from arthouse experiments to popular genre films, through both thematic concerns and narrative structures. These films, especially the recent spate of “elevated” science fiction and horror, tap into this deep-seated anxiety by focusing on characters who ultimately fail to transcend the patterns and structures that define them. Thomas M. Puhr identifies and analyzes the ways that cinema has dealt with the tension between fate and free will, from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining to Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. He examines films that express deterministic ideas, including circular narratives of stasis or confinement and fatalistic portraits of external forces dictating characters’ lives. Puhr considers determinism at the levels of the individual, the family, and society, reading films in which characters are trapped by past or alternate selves, the burdens of family histories, or oppressive social structures. He explores how films such as Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis, Ari Aster’s Hereditary, Jordan Peele’s Us, and Lucrecia Martel’s Zama confront the limits of human agency. Puhr relates deterministic themes to the nature of moviegoing: In denying characters any ability to choose alternative paths, these films mirror how viewers themselves can only sit and watch. Recasting the works of some of today’s most compelling directors, Fate in Film is an innovative critical account of an unrecognized yet crucial aspect of contemporary cinema.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of the senses in the creation and reception of poetry? How does poetry carry on the long tradition of making experience and suffering understood by others? With Poetry and the Fate of the Senses, Susan Stewart traces the path of the aesthetic in search of an explanation for the role of poetry in culture. Herself an acclaimed poet, Stewart not only brings the intelligence of a critic to the question of poetry, but the insight of a practitioner as well. Her new study includes close discussions of poems by Stevens, Hopkins, Keats, Hardy, Bishop, and Traherne, of the sense of vertigo in Baroque and Romantic works, and of the rich tradition of nocturnes in visual, musical, and verbal art. Ultimately, she argues that poetry can counter the denigration of the senses in contemporary life and can expand our imagination of the range of human expression. Poetry and the Fate of the Senses won the 2004 Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin, administered for the Truman Capote Estate by the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. It also won the Phi Beta Kappa Society's 2002 Christian Gauss Award for Literary Criticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard Truths and Amazing Grace Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel spoke words of warning, comfort, and punishment to the people of Israel in Judah and during the Babylonian Captivity. Though they faced incredible loss and persecution as they grieved the choices the Israelites made, these major prophets of the Old Testament fulfilled their role as God’s voice to a rebellious people. In this highly respected commentary, Dallas Theological Seminary scholars explore the historical and cultural background of the prophets, the literary devices they used, and what these books teach us about God’s call to us to follow Him today.
