Book excerpt: Evelyn enjoyed living a nice, quiet life in an anarchic pirate port, far from the world she'd once conquered. Then came an attack by mercenaries that made her angry. By the time the dust settled, she had a group of former slaves which she'd freed, her djinn assistant had convinced several of the women that they should join Evelyn's brand-new harem, and she was looking for a new home, likely aboard a ship. If nothing else, it was going to make Evelyn's life more interesting, and she almost looked forward to it. If the rest of the cluster was sweating bullets at the re-emergence of a notorious warlord, that was their problem, not hers.

The Director of ChaosCenter laid it out bluntly: "All our evidence suggests that a device that can alter probability exists. For want of a better name we call it the Chaos Weapon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, David Tsumura published a monograph entitled The Earth and the Waters in Genesis 1 and 2: A Linguistic Evaluation, in which he demonstrated that the oft-recited claim that the early chapters of Genesis betrayed a background or adaptation by Israel of mythological terms and/or motifs from other ancient Near Eastern literature could not be supported by a close examination of the linguistic data. Despite the book's positive reception, the notion that the Chaoskampf motif lies behind the early chapters of Genesis continues to be rehearsed in the literature as if the data were incontrovertible. In this revised and expanded edition of the 1989 book, Tsumura carries the discussion forward. In part 1, the general thesis of the original work is restated in a significantly revised and expanded form; in the second part of this monograph, he expands the scope of his research to include a number of poetic texts outside the Primeval History, texts for which scholars often have posited an ancient Near Eastern mythological substratum. Among the questions asked are the following: What are the functions of "waters" and "flood" in biblical poetry? Do the so-called chaos dragons in the Old Testament, such as Leviathan, Rahab, and Yam, have anything to do with the creation motif in the biblical tradition? What is the relationship between these poetic texts and the Ugaritic myths of the Baal-Yam conflict? Are Psalms 18 and 29 "adaptations" of Canaanite hymns, as suggested by some scholars? Among the conclusions that Tsumura reaches are these: (1) The phrase tohû wabohû has nothing to do with the idea of a chaotic state of the earth. (2) The term tehà ́m in Gen 1:2 is a Hebrew form derived from the Proto-Semitic *tiham-, "ocean," and it usually refers to the underground water that was overflowing and covering the entire surface of the earth in the initial state of creation. (3) The earth-water relationship in Gen 2:5-6 is different from that in Gen 1:2. In Gen 1:2, the earth was totally under the water; in Gen 2:5-6, only a part of the earth, the land, was watered by the 'ed-water, which was overflowing from an underground source. (4) The biblical poetic texts that are claimed to have been influenced by the Chaoskampf-motif of the ancient Near East in fact use the language of storms and floods metaphorically and have nothing to do with primordial combat.

Book excerpt: President Gardner has been assassinated, dismembered and his parts stone staked to one of the walls of the Oval Office, but unbelievably that grim scenario is not (nor even close to being) the worst threat facing the United States. An attack of biblical dimensions has wiped out more than a third of the population in the large-scale operation known as "The Day of the Raven." Yet America's weapons and response capabilities are 90% operational, and what's left of the government is asking: why? Who have bulldozed us to rubble but left our offensive responsiveness mostly intact? Who have been responsible? How is it possible that any defense or response system has failed? The satellites are taken, the communications controlled by the enemy, and the Vice President turns to the only Private Investigator and ex-CIA, Jack Warden, with an impeccable record of zero failures in his services to the country, to help him understand what or who they are facing, and form a contingency and retaliatory offensive response plan. Jack will lead the efforts of the largest joint force of Intelligence and investigative resources ever formed to mitigate the damage caused and find those responsible. They cannot, however, suspect that perhaps "The Day America Was Subdued," as it would later be known, would be but the first link in a chain that could lead to global annihilation. The end... of the human race and of life as we conceive it. Marcel Pujol, in his Opera Prima, and which constitutes his eleventh published title, guides us along a path of madness and destruction in which there are a few humans who are sensitive to the flows of energies and interconnections between the different planes of the multiverse, which can be channeled with the purpose of bringing to our plane and our planet Earth, grotesque creatures as well as deadly (demons, salamanders, sylphs and Virtues) that will do whatever their summoner orders in order to return to their dimension.

It does so through parallel introductory explanations in the book and interaction with carefully-selected programs supplied on the accompanying disk. The programs enable readers, especially advanced-undergraduate students in physics, engineering, and math, to tackle relevant physical systems quickly on their PCs, without distraction from algorithmic details. For the third edition of Chaos: A Program Collection for the PC, each of the previous twelve programs is polished and rewritten in C++ (both Windows and Linux versions are included). A new program treats kicked systems, an important class of two-dimensional problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I started writing this book, I wasn’t sure if I would live long enough to finish it. My drug addiction was so unmanageably bad, I truly believed that I was doomed to fail. I had so many secrets, hidden thoughts, and feelings that I felt it was very important for me to document my life in such a way that it would help explain some things to my family that I have kept in the dark, to shed some light as to who I was as a person. Because I truly felt like I was running out of time and I didn’t know what else to do but to write somewhat of a love letter/goodbye letter to my friends and family. Then as my sobriety became stronger, I decided to leave everything as it was but add lessons that I have learned along the way. Now, much of this book has become mostly what I’ve learned before and during my sobriety with the intention of sharing my experiences for the reader to relate to on an emotional level, to inspire everyone and anyone searching for a deeper understanding of life and spiritual wisdom. I believe I am only scratching the surface of what is possible. But I know I’m on to something good. This is the type of good that should be shared with anyone who is seeking it. I wouldn’t be doing the universe any favors by keeping this information all to myself. This is a spiritual book about life—my life, your life, and all life. From the smallest life-forms to the largest. This is a book about the past, the present, and the possible future. I believe all people have unique qualities that make them individuals. I also believe, on a fundamental level, that all people are the same. If I can understand my life, I can understand all life. Everything we say and do is a reflection of how we see ourselves and how we see the world. We are living in a modern society where all the information of the world is at our fingertips, good and bad. As our intelligence increases, the likelihood of depression increases with it. Unless you know how to counter it. How much is a quiet, peaceful mind worth to you? This book combines mind, body, spirit, psychology, religion, and science all in one. Mainly because they are all connected and we can’t fully comprehend the full complex simplicity of life if we leave one of them out.

Book excerpt: John C. Wright burst onto the SF scene with the Golden Age trilogy. His next project was the ambitious fantasy sequence, The Last Guardians of Everness. Wright's new fantasy is a tale about five orphans raised in a strict British boarding school who begin to discover that they may not be human beings. The students at the school do not age, while the world around them does. The children begin to make sinister discoveries about themselves. Amelia is apparently a fourth-dimensional being; Victor is a synthetic man who can control the molecular arrangement of matter around him; Vanity can find secret passageways through solid walls where none had previously been; Colin is a psychic; Quentin is a warlock. Each power comes from a different paradigm or view of the inexplicable universe: and they should not be able to co-exist under the same laws of nature. Why is it that they can? The orphans have been kidnapped from their true parents, robbed of their powers, and raised in ignorance by super-beings no more human than they are: pagan gods or fairy-queens, Cyclopes, sea-monsters, witches, or things even stranger than this. The children must experiment with, and learn to control, their strange abilities in order to escape their captors.
