Book excerpt: Fatally Flawed is an inside look into the world of deep diving and the people who populate it. This is the story of how Verna van Schaik found a way to become the deepest woman in one of the most extreme sports in the world, cave diving. The story follows Verna's start in diving More...in 1989 when technical diving was in its infancy, follows her journey with Nuno Gomes as a support diver on his record breaking dives and culminates with her experiences on Dave Shaw's dive. It was this dive that allowed Verna to finally see past the carefully edited illusion that is 'being the deepest'. Suddenly her experience with the top divers in South Africa ( if not the world) gave her a unique opportunity to question who deep divers really are. What drives a person to place their life on the line ? Why do they want so desperately to be the deepest ? Are they fatally flawed ?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring case vignettes from nearly 30 years of Dr. Yudofsky's clinical practice and incorporating the knowledge of gifted clinicians, educators, and research scientists with whom he has collaborated throughout that time, Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships With People With Disorders of Personality and Character uniquely captures the rapidly increasing body of clinical and research information about people with severe and persistent personality and character disorders. Within these pages, the author brings to life the psychopathologies of personality and character disorders through vivid vignettes based on composites of his many patients and their most important relationships -- while meticulously changing the identifying facts and relevant details to protect confidentiality. Covering the clinical course, treatment, genetics, biology, psychology, and destructive consequences of hysterical (histrionic), narcissistic, antisocial, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive, addictive, borderline, and schizotypal personality disorders, Fatal Flaws stands out in the literature for these powerful reasons: It is written for an unusually broad audience, from mental health students and trainees of all disciplines, to highly experienced clinicians, to patients who suffer from or are in destructive relationships with people with personality disorders. It is a hybrid -- part psychiatric textbook for clinicians and part self-help manual for patients and clients with personality and character disorders. It is designed to supplement treatment by providing patients with practical, evidence-based information about personality disorders and character flaws. It is particularly valuable to patients who are in psychotherapy, in part, because they are entangled in destructive relationships with people with disorders of personality and/or character. It is written in the first person, with the author directly communicating with a patient who either has a personality or character disorder or is in an important relationship with a person who has such a disorder. It is useful for people who are uncertain whether they or their loved ones have personality or character disorders, and who want to know more about these conditions and their treatments before making a decision about securing the help of a mental health professional. Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships With People With Disorders of Personality and Character is a compelling volume that provides the essential information and a realistic sense of the clinical experience required to inform, orient, and support novice mental health professionals and seasoned practitioners alike as they face the ongoing challenges of treating patients or clients with personality or character disorders. It should also prove to be an invaluable resource for those who wish practical and effective help in understanding and changing their destructive relationships with people who have severe and persistent disorders of personality and/or character.

Book excerpt: Two fiery deaths have young lawyer Daniel Pitt and his scientist friend Miriam fford Croft racing to solve a forensic crisis in this explosive new novel from New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL When a desperate woman comes to Daniel Pitt seeking a lawyer for her boyfriend, Rob Adwell, Daniel is convinced of the young man’s innocence. Adwell has been accused of murder and of setting a fire to conceal the body, but Daniel is sure that science can absolve him—and Miriam fford Croft is the best scientist he knows. Miriam connects Daniel with her former teacher Sir Barnabas Saltram, an expert in arson, and together, they reveal Adwell’s innocence by proving that an accidental fire caused the victim’s death. But it’s not long before Adwell is killed in the same fiery fashion. If these deaths are, in fact, murders, what essential clue could Daniel and Miriam have missed? As their investigation deepens, one of Saltram’s former cases comes into question, and Miriam finds herself on the defensive. If the reasoning Saltram used in that case is proved false, several other cases will have to be re-tried, and Saltram’s expert status—not to mention Miriam’s reputation—will be ruined. Haunted by Saltram’s shady tactics in and outside of the classroom, Miriam is desperate to figure out truths both past and present and protect herself in the face of Saltram’s lies. What started as an accidental fire in Adwell’s case seems to be linked to a larger plot for revenge, with victims accumulating in its wake, and Miriam and Daniel must uncover who or what is stoking these recurring flames—before they, too, find themselves burned.

Book excerpt: Does it not seem strange that these patrons of truth have no actual base for the truth they espouse? Should not these champions of reason offer some plausible foundation for the rational thought they employ? Who can but doubt these adversaries of God who cannot even account for the moral sense by which they denounce Him? What shall we say of masters of science who would deprive science of the undergirding of truth and reason? These are not lords of their own domain, as they might suppose. They are squatters on a land belonging to anothermere pretenders, plagiarizers of values not their own. Like the Prodigal Son, they have taken the resources bequeathed by a loving Father and squandered them in futile meanderings. No one should take these men as seriously as they take themselves. They are not reaching for the far horizon line. Rather they are trapped in their tiny, cramped valley called physicality and have chosen to ignore every other doorway to reality. They are not men reaching for the stars. They are rather like those who wade through muck and mire, stirring up more as they go.

Book excerpt: Drift is a medley style compilation of poetry, prose, quips and descriptive ditties about various topics, primarily geared towards adult relationships, which have drifted into this book’s authors’ minds over the relevant time frame of this books creation. Readers are advised that some poetry herein is from a long ago time frame. These ancient poems are primarily the remaining stragglers as they are found with the exception of a small number of works that link into other works within this book. As a medley style book of poetry there is no specific categorization of works and works are not presented in any particular or planned order. Many poems within Drift express desires, wishes, disappointments, sorrows as well as specific real-life components in relationships, including common patterns of dysfunctional relationship patterns. In these dysfunctional romantic relationship patterns this writer posits most people have experienced the issues presented in poetry within this book while the majority of people may not have examined, dissected, analyzed and/or named the various components as well as personality types that lead to, accept or become pulled into strive, sometimes despite the intelligence or wisdom of certain individuals impacted by the dysfunction. Limited essay or bullet point material is added to provide readers with greater clarity into the poetry within Drift. This book additionally provides footnotes on some of the poetry to further assist readers unfamiliar with poetry. These footnotes are intended to assist readers in their ultimate understanding of the poems herein. It is noteworthy to add that poetry in Drift utilizes the term “You,” which is not a common form of presentation for this book’s most prolific writer who typically avoids second person reference such as this. The usage of the term “You” is not intended to imply the poetry within this book is directed to any particular reader or readers in general. This writer sincerely hopes readers both enjoy and learn from the poetry in Drift. Readers are invited to look into other books of poetry by the author/authors of Drift, including Drift’s highly organized and thus artistically variant poetic predecessor A Veritable Medley of Poetic Meanderings, through Online book vendors such as Xlibris, Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, etc. The second book in Drift is specifically designed solely for victims of the sophisticated sociopath domestic predator. Photos therein are somewhat akin to the theme by another writer not linked to either Sereena Nightshade or Brian Guzzi of “I wore red lipstick to my mastectomy” as well as for readers’ reprieve from the material presented.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the events leading up to the cluster munitions ban, the provisions of the treaty, as well as assesses the progress made in the years since towards a world without the presence of cluster munitions. Cluster bombs are weapons that are small but deadly. They often look like small metal canisters, and some of them are painted, giving them the innocuous appearance of a soda can. The unexploded submunitions that are scattered on the ground, in effect, act as landmines, that can kill or severely injure anyone who comes across them, sometimes even years and decades later. It has been reported that 98% of all casualties of cluster munitions are civilians, of which one-third are children. Cluster munitions have been used in numerous conflicts since the Second World War, and it has been estimated that at least 1 billion submunitions were stockpiled globally. The campaign to ban cluster munitions faced a monumental and nearly impossible task – to convince governments to agree to stop using a valuable weapon that they stockpiled by the hundreds of thousands, in a political climate where the interests of national security and state sovereignty outweighed humanitarian concerns in almost every instance. However, where many international agreements failed and diplomatic processes stalled, the campaign to ban cluster munitions succeeded. Despite strong opposition from many countries, 107 countries met in Dublin in May 2008 to negotiate and adopt a treaty prohibiting the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions. The outcome of the Oslo Process was a ray of hope among the usual cynicism and disenchantment of similar international processes. This book explores this question: how was this accomplished, and are there any wider lessons to be learned from it?

Too often scenes are lacking the necessary actions, descriptions, and details needed to bring them to life.Description Deficiencies and Excesses-Learning how to balance description is challenging, and writers need to choose wisely just what to describe and in what way. Don't be left in the dark. Learn what causes these flaws and apply the fixes in your own stories. No one need suffer novel failure. You don't have to be brilliant or talented to write strong fiction. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018 ONE OF THE ECONOMIST'S BOOKS OF THE YEAR "My new favorite book of all time." --Bill Gates If you think the world is coming to an end, think again: people are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science. By the author of the new book, Rationality. Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing. Far from being a naïve hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature--tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking--which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation. With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.
