These questions pertaining to daily practices on a grass-root level have not been addressed in previous research. The book, which follows an earlier collection, Heredity Produced (covering the period 1500 to 1870), addresses heredity in national debates over identity, kinship, and reproduction; biopolitical conceptions of heredity, degeneration, and gender; agro-industrial contexts for newly emerging genetic rationality; heredity and medical research; and the genealogical constructs and experimental systems of genetics that turned heredity into a representable and manipulable object. Taken together, the essays in Heredity Explored show that a history of heredity includes much more than the history of genetics, and that knowledge of heredity was always more than the knowledge formulated as Mendelism. It was the broader public discourse of heredity in all its contexts that made modern genetics possible.

The countries he knew best and where he had most friends and correspondents were France, Germany and Britain. Brandes' relationship to those countries was the subject of the Second International Georg Brandes Conference held in Nancy (France) in November 2008. The authors are from various countries (France, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, USA, Czech Republic...), stressing the international dimension of their research. Based on the discovery of the Indo-European language family, it seemed to admit the reconstruction of a common history of European languages, and even mythologies, literatures, and people. However, it also represented a way to establish geographies of belonging and difference in the context of 19th century nation-building and identity politics. In spite of a widely acknowledged consensus about the principles and methods of comparative philology, the results depended on local conditions and practices. If Scandinavians were considered to be Germanic or not, for example, was up to identity politics that differed in Berlin, Strasbourg, Copenhagen and Paris. The contributors here elaborate these dynamics through analyses of the changing and conflicting versions of imaginative geographies that the actors of comparative philology evoked by using Scandinavian literatures and cultures. They also show how these seemingly delocalized scientific model depended on ever-different local needs and practices. Through this, the book represents the first distinctly transnational dynamic geography and history of the philological knowledge of the North not only as a history of a scientific discourse, but also as a result of doing and performing scientific work."

It is only possible to recognize and evaluate material culture in connection with human thought and behavior. The material world depends on the immaterial one, and vice versa. Neither sphere can exist without the other. In historical research, however, such contexts have not been considered regularly. In particular, the inter-connections between emotions and material culture have not been taken sufficiently into account in research. This was the reason for the "Institut fur Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit" to organize a round-table-discussion on "Emotions and Material Culture" and to publish its proceedings. The volume contains eleven contributions by specialists from eight countries. They show various possibilities to contextualize the material world and emotional behavior. They may be seen as a first step towards a "material emotionology" of the past. The complex results are intended to serve as a further impetus towards the systematic and comparative research into "emotional communities" and their material life in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, the convergence of interest (thought not neces sarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain problems, the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, and the growing signifi cance for philosophical discourse of the social, political and cul tural situation in various regions of the world are the most impor tant contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valu able source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philo sophical problems. The surveys, it is to be hoped, may also help to strengthen a world-wide Socratic element of modern philosophy, the dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. So far, five volumes have been prepared for the new series.
