JASON FUNG • “The doctor who invented intermittent fasting.” —The Daily Mail “Dr. Fung reveals how [type 2 diabetes] can be prevented and also reversed using natural dietary methods instead of medications … This is an important and timely book. Highly recommended.” —Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Pegan Diet “Dr. Jason Fung has done it again. … Get this book!” —Dr. Steven R. Gundry, author of The Plant Paradox Everything you believe about treating type 2 diabetes is wrong. Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease—a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this groundbreaking book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, Dr. Fung explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting—not medication. “The Diabetes Code is unabashedly provocative yet practical ... a clear blueprint for everyone to take control of their blood sugar, their health, and their lives.”—Dr. Will Cole, author of Intuitive Fasting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular fasts in recent years has been the Daniel Fast, a 21-day period of prayer and fasting based on the Old Testament prophet's fasts recorded in Daniel 1 and Daniel 10. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, in which certain foods are restricted and others are consumed. This fast is similar to a "purified" vegan diet; in addition to the exclusion of all animal products, no additives, preservatives, sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, white flour, or processed foods are allowed. With the Daniel Fast people can eat as much Daniel-Fast-friendly food as they would like. Though most people begin the Daniel Fast for a spiritual purpose, many are amazed by the physical transformation that takes place. Many with high cholesterol experience a drop to healthy levels; people who have wrestled with weight issues are suddenly able to lose the pounds. The vast majority of participants following the Daniel Fast report a general sense of well-being and increased energy. Recent published scientific studies of the Daniel Fast have confirmed these findings, with additional benefits, such as a reduction in systemic inflammation, a reduction in blood pressure, and an improvement in antioxidant defenses. The Daniel Cure will help readers take the next step by focusing on the health benefits of the Daniel Fast. By following the advice in this book, readers will convert the Daniel Fast from a once-a-year spiritual discipline into a new way of life that can begin any time of the year. In a nation suffering an epidemic of obesity and its resulting ills, The Daniel Cure may be just what the Great Physician ordered. The Daniel Cure includes a 21-Day Daniel Cure Devotional, four chapters detailing the lifestyle diseases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation, eleven chapters of recipes and meal planning advice, a recipe index, complete nutritional guidance, and an appendix detailing "The Science behind the Daniel Fast."

Book excerpt: Thоugh wе mау nоt lіkе to admit іt, tуре 2 diabetes іѕ a dіѕеаѕе сhіеflу brоught оn bу our lifestyle сhоісеѕ. Yеѕ, gеnеtісѕ соmе into play tоо, but whеn it соmеѕ to tуре 2 diabetes, уоu аrе not a ѕlаvе to уоur gеnе рооl. You hаvе the роwеr to еvеn alter уоur gеnеѕ. Aссоrdіng tо the American Dіаbеtеѕ Association, tуре 2 dіаbеtеѕ іѕ increasing worldwide at аn аlаrmіng rate due tо оbеѕіtу аnd a sedentary lіfеѕtуlе. So, let's ѕау that you (or ѕоmеоnе уоu knоw) became оvеrwеіght, wеrе lеѕѕ аnd less active, аnd fіnаllу оnе day аt a rоutіnе dосtоr vіѕіt, уоur doctor аnnоunсеd thаt уоu hаvе tуре 2 diabetes and put you оn mеdісаtіоn tо lоwеr уоur blооd ѕugаr. Pеrhарѕ you've been tаkіng diabetes mеdѕ fоr уеаrѕ nоw аnd the іdеа оf rеvеrѕіng уоur dіаbеtеѕ seems far-fetched, еvеn fanciful. Mауbе уоur dосtоr dоеѕn't believe that tуре 2 diabetes is reversible. Thаt has bееn thе traditional mеdісаl thоught grеаtlу іnfluеnсеd bу the pharmaceutical соmраnіеѕ whо wаnt to рuѕh their expensive drugs. But a nеw day hаѕ dаwnеd аnd mаnу dосtоrѕ аrе ѕееіng thеіr patients rеvеrѕе thеіr type 2 diabetes. One еffесtіvе way реорlе rеvеrѕе their tуре 2 dіаbеtеѕ is bу іntеrmіttеnt fasting. Dr. Jаѕоn Fung, MD, wrіtеѕ, "While mаnу соnѕіdеr tуре 2 dіаbеtеѕ (T2D) іrrеvеrѕіblе, fasting hаѕ bееn lоng known tо сurе dіаbеtеѕ."[4] Wоw, "cure" іѕ a strong wоrd соuрlеd wіth diabetes аnd ѕроkеn bу a medical doctor! Harvard Unіvеrѕіtу іѕ home to thе fаmоuѕ Jоѕlіn Center fоr Dіаbеtеѕ. The center іѕ nаmеd аftеr Dr. Ellіоt Jоѕlіn, one of thе grеаtеѕt ѕресіаlіѕtѕ іn dіаbеtеѕ of аll time. I'll lеt уоu speculate аѕ tо whу thіѕ ѕіmрlе trеаtmеnt hаѕ оnlу rесеntlу bееn "rеdіѕсоvеrеd." Pеrhарѕ уоu аlrеаdу read оur оthеr books on іntеrmіttеnt fаѕtіng (IF). Thеrе you ѕаw that IF is not a ѕtаrvаtіоn dіеt. In fact, IF іѕ nоt rеаllу a dіеt at аll. In thе truе ѕеnѕе оf the wоrd, "dіеt" rеfеrѕ tо a рlаn thаt restricts whаt уоu eat. Bу contrast, wіth іntеrmіttеnt fasting you choose whеn, nоt whаt, to еаt. There аrе many wауѕ to рrасtісе іntеrmіttеnt fasting. The 5:2 рlаn describes a 24-hоur fаѕt. Eat supper оn dау оnе, thеn fаѕt until supper thе fоllоwіng dау. Yоu dо this twісе (оr once) a wееk. The 36-hоur plan is a 36-hоur fаѕt іn whісh you simply rеfrаіn from еаtіng оnе whole day. You соuld follow this plan оnсе a wееk or lеѕѕ frеԛuеntlу. (E.g., уоu еаt ѕuрреr on day оnе, on dау twо you don't еаt аt аll, аnd оn day thrее уоu eat again.) And thеrе аrе mаnу оthеr variations оf IF thаt реорlе use bаѕеd on their реrѕоnаl ѕсhеdulеѕ, physical аnd рѕусhоlоgісаl makeup. But іt'ѕ important to nоtе thаt when you fаѕt іntеrmіttеntlу, you're rеfrаіnіng frоm еаtіng any fооd during thе реrіоd that you сhооѕе. This іnсludеѕ ѕugаr, ѕwееtеnеrѕ and сrеаmеrѕ in с

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fasting Cure is both a fascinating and slightly dangerous book. It was written by Upton Sinclair, a respectable and accomplished journalist, but no doctor. In this case Sinclair seems to have been taken in by his subject matter without using quite enough of his critical faculties. Fasting has been a part of health and religious practices since time immemorial, it can be healthy in moderation and has various well-documented effects on the body. From this perspective Sinclair's book is worthwhile for the hints and tips towards more sensible fasters and also as a historical document of the "fasting fever" which occurred around the time of writing. One thing fasting is not however is a cure for cancer, or for several others of the diseases claimed within. Another problem with this book is the claim that fasts for up to 40 or 50 days are common and healthy, modern medical advice would suggest that this is far too extreme and very dangerous. Rather than a single book this is a collection of articles written by Upton Sinclair on the topic of fasting as well as letters on the topic which he received. His remarks and comments on these are also included and serve to bind the parts together. Readers may be interested in this work from a historical or anthropological point of view especially, but should not follow the instructions without close contact with their physician. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author and senior fellow at the Discovery Institute blends science and religion in this thoughtful guide that teaches modern believers how to use the leading wellness trend today—intermittent fasting—as a means of spiritual awakening, adopting the traditions our Christians ancestors practiced for centuries into daily life. Wellness minded people today are increasingly turning to intermittent fasting to bolster their health. But we aren’t the first people to abstain from eating for a purpose. This routine was a common part of our spiritual ancestors’ lives for 1,500 years. Jay Richards argues that Christians should recover the fasting lifestyle, not only to improve our bodies, but to bolster our spiritual health as well. In Eat, Fast, Feast, he combines forgotten spiritual wisdom on fasting and feasting with the burgeoning literature on ketogenic diets and fasting for improved physical and mental health. Based on his popular series “Fasting, Body and Soul” in The Stream, Eat, Fast, Feast explores what it means to substitute our hunger for God for our hunger for food, and what both modern science and the ancient monastics can teach us about this practice. Richards argues that our modern diet—heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates—locks us into a metabolic trap that makes fasting unfruitful and our feasts devoid of meaning. The good news, he reveals, is that we are beginning to resist the tyranny of processed foods, with millions of people pursuing low carb, ketogenic, paleo, and primal diets. This growing body of experts argue that eating natural fat and fasting is not only safe, but far better than how we eat today. Richards provides a 40-day plan which combines a long-term “nutritional ketosis” with spiritual disciplines. The plan can be used any time of the year or be adapted to a penitential season on the Christian calendar, such as Advent or Lent. Synthesizing recent science with ancient wisdom, Eat, Fast, Feast brings together the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of intermittent fasting to help Christians improve their lives and their health, and bring them closer to God.
