Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is favorable to analyze physical records in organic tissue with a specific purpose by means of a method related to the forward problem and the inverse solution. This study develops morphological soft tissue realization using an image reconstruction algorithm constructed on multifrequency DOT in Near-Infra-Red (NIR) wavelength. Forward problem solves the Diffusion Equation to compute the optical flux distributed in the phantom geometrical model. Inverse solution, the image is reconstructed using the absorption and reduced scattered coefficients under different boundary conditions. The inverse image reconstruction algorithm is tested for several simulation, with variation in background contrast ratios for different frequencies are simulated. The image reconstruction in DOT eliminates spatial resolution by optimizing source-detector separation and modulation intensities of the source.

Book excerpt: With the increased interest in potential clinical applications based on quantitative results, the aim of this study is to improve the quantitative consistency of the reconstructed images in emission tomography (ET). To achieve practical processing time, a fast convergent quasi-Newton algorithm, preconditioned limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno with boundary constraints (L-BFGS-B-PC), is firstly proposed. Its performance is eval- uated using both simulations and three patient datasets. Results show that L-BFGS-B-PC is able to achieve several times faster convergence rate than separable paraboloidal surrogates (SPS). Moreover, the performance is less sensitive to penalty type, penalty strength, noise level and background level, compared to L-BFGS-B. To be able to improve the image quality and quantitative consistency, an anatomical penalty function is then considered with a spatially-variant penalty strength. Based on results for simulations and data from one patient with inserted pseudo lesions, the spatially-variant penalty reduces the quantitative dependence on the surrounding activity and location. Moreover, it benefits the algorithm convergence rate and its consistency among datasets. It is important to consider potential misalignment between the functional and anatomical images. For this reason, two approaches that perform alternating pe- nalised image reconstruction and misalignment estimation are therefore proposed. Expanding on the previous work, L-BFGS-B-PC using Parallel Level Sets (PLS) with the spatially-variant penalty strength is used in both approaches. Preliminary results for non-time-of-flight (non-TOF) data simulations demonstrate that both methods are able to estimate the misalignment and deform the anatomical image accordingly when a proper workflow for the alternating optimisation is applied. By integrating algorithms proposed in this study, both good image quality and consistent quantification can be achieved in a practical processing time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoacoustic tomography is a rapidly developing medical imaging technique that combines optical and ultrasound imaging to exploit the high contrast and high resolution of the respective individual modalities. Mathematically, photoacoustic tomography is divided into two steps. In the first step, one solves an inverse problem for the wave equation to determine how tissue absorbs light as a result of a boundary illumination. The second step is generally modeled by either diffusion or transport equations, and involves recovering the optical properties of the region being imaged. In this paper we, we provide an overview of mathematical progress in photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography, as well as inverse problems for the radiative transfer equation. We then address quantitative photoacoustic tomography modeled by the radiative transfer equation, and in particular, we show that the absorption coefficient in the stationary transport equation can be recovered given certain internal information about the solution. Our new result will consider the variable index of refraction case, which will correspond to an inverse transport problem on a Riemannian manifold with internal data and a known metric. We will prove a stability estimate for a functional of the absorption coefficient of the medium by finding a singular decomposition for the distribution kernel of the measurement operator. Finally, we will use this estimate to recover the desired absorption properties.

Book excerpt: This entry-level textbook, covering the area of tissue optics, is based on the lecture notes for a graduate course (Bio-optical Imaging) that has been taught six times by the authors at Texas A&M University. After the fundamentals of photon transport in biological tissues are established, various optical imaging techniques for biological tissues are covered. The imaging modalities include ballistic imaging, quasi-ballistic imaging (optical coherence tomography), diffusion imaging, and ultrasound-aided hybrid imaging. The basic physics and engineering of each imaging technique are emphasized. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive tutorial on propagation, diffraction and scattering problems from the basic principles of physical optics. Beginning with the fundamental differential and integral equations for wavefields, the text presents an exhaustive discussion on the extinction theorem as a non-local boundary condition; this has been extensively employed for the rigorous solution of scattering and diffraction problems. There is also an in-depth presentation of the topic of scattering from rough surfaces, in particular the phenomenon of enhanced backscattering, as well as a detailed development of the angular spectrum representation of fields leading to questions on non-diffraction beams. Of key interest in near field optical microscopy and nanooptics, the S-matrix theory based on the angular spectrum for propagating components and the recently discovered properties of the S-matrix for evanescent components of wavefields are considered. In addition, the book deals with the healing effect of phase conjugation on waves, and focuses on some applications concerning the relationship with time reversal.Readers will also find discussions on image recovery from partial information data (phase problems and super-resolution problems), as well as a chapter on the fundamentals of near field optical microscopy techniques, including the hot topic of propagation in negative index media.
