Book excerpt: The pressure on the boundary of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's (LLNL) tandem mirror (TMX-U) plasma experiment is difficult to trace for several reasons: (1) the TMX-U boundary is in the high vacuum range (10−5 to 10−6 Pa) and requires an ionization gauge; (2) the boundary includes high-energy neutral particles and radiation, so the gauge must be optically baffled from the plasma; (3) the gauge must be shielded from the magnetic flux density of 0.03 T; (4) maximum conductance to the gauge must be preserved so that the time response remains about 1 ms; (5) a fast electrical circuit is required to measure the small ion-current changes at a rate consistent with the geometrical and experimental time constant of 1 ms. We have developed solutions to these limitations, including fast ionization gauge (FIG) circuitry for the remote gauge operation and the CAMAC system for recording the pressure-time history in the TMX-U computer data base. We also give some examples of actual fast pressure histories during plasma operation.

Book excerpt: Rate equations for the plasma species in a thermal barrier end plug establish an upper bound on the neutral pressure (P) external to the plasma. For the Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade (TMX-U), this bound is P less than or equal to 0.5 - 1.0 x 10−6 Torr. Initially TMX-U did not satisfy this criterion, and axial end plugging of plasma losses seemed limited by the excessive pressure. Subsequently, we modified the machine to improve the vacuum conditions, decreasing P to the desired range. At the same time axial end plugging of plasma losses increased to the duration of neutral beam injection and ECRH heating. Here we summarize our experimental measurements of gas input.

These pressure variations can produce locally high neutral density in the plasma, which strongly affects the plasma parameters. These local pressure measurements include data from a newly installed neutral-pressure diagnostic system of fast magnetron gauges. The plasma-induced warm-wall reflux has been observed to be primarily HD and H2 as opposed to D2. This observation supports the model that all of the neutral D2 gas enters the plasma region, strikes the plasma first, and is dissociated. The part of the D2 gas, which is not absorbed as ions, strikes a wall, where it is converted to HD. Electron induced wall desorption measured by a mass spectroscopy and actual analysis of the Ti indicates predominately H2 instead of D2 wall loading in TMX-U.
