Book excerpt: NASCAR's Winston Cup Series has become one of America's fastest-growing spectator sports, with nationwide television coverage, custom-built race cars, and superstar drivers. Yet the sport's roots are grounded in the moonshiners and farm boys who raced souped-up family cars every weekend on the dirt tracks of the Southeast. The evolution of stock car racing from a band of regional weekend warriors into a billion-dollar industry sponsored by some of the nation's largest corporations is explored by eight of the sport's most respected and experienced chroniclers. Taking Stock includes previously unpublished stories about the past and present of racing, and it provides a close-up look at the characters, rich and poor, prominent and obscure, who possess the stuff of legends. This collection features racing stories by award-winning motorsports journalists Monte Dutton of the Gaston(GASTONIA, N.C.) Gazette, Kenny Bruce of NASCAR Winston Cup Scene, Mike Hembree of the Greenville (S.C.) News, Jim McLaurin of the State (Columbia, S.C.), Jeff Owens of NASCAR Winston Cup Scene, David Poole of the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, Thomas Pope of the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer, and Larry Woody of the Tennessean (Nashville).

As her family struggled to make ends meet, Jenny found a bounty of good fortune and success in the swimming pool. The family folklore maintains that Jenny could swim before she could walk. This water baby went on to win eight Olympic Gold medals as one of the fastest female swimmers in the world. Jenny had to deal with some hardships, including wearing a brace for scoliosis and being teased about being so tall and strong. And she did it with her constant positive outlook and rugged determination to succeed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Is the financial plan of mediocrity -- a dream-stealing, soul-sucking dogma known as "The Slowlane" your plan for creating wealth? You know how it goes; it sounds a lil something like this: "Go to school, get a good job, save 10% of your paycheck, buy a used car, cancel the movie channels, quit drinking expensive Starbucks mocha lattes, save and penny-pinch your life away, trust your life-savings to the stock market, and one day, when you are oh, say, 65 years old, you can retire rich." The mainstream financial gurus have sold you blindly down the river to a great financial gamble: You've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by recklessly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. This impotent financial gamble dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair -- sacrifice your adult life for a financial plan that reaps dividends in the twilight of life. Accept the Slowlane as your blueprint for wealth and your financial future will blow carelessly asunder on a sailboat of HOPE: HOPE you can find a job and keep it, HOPE the stock market doesn't tank, HOPE the economy rebounds, HOPE, HOPE, and HOPE. Do you really want HOPE to be the centerpiece for your family's financial plan? Drive the Slowlane road and you will find your life deteriorate into a miserable exhibition about what you cannot do, versus what you can. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less" and a slight chance of elderly riches, there is an alternative; an expressway to extraordinary wealth that can burn a trail to financial independence faster than any road out there. Why jobs, 401(k)s, mutual funds, and 40-years of mindless frugality will never make you rich young. Why most entrepreneurs fail and how to immediately put the odds in your favor. The real law of wealth: Leverage this and wealth has no choice but to be magnetized to you. The leading cause of poorness: Change this and you change everything. How the rich really get rich - and no, it has nothing to do with a paycheck or a 401K match. Why the guru's grand deity - compound interest - is an impotent wealth accelerator. Why the guru myth of "do what you love" will most likely keep you poor, not rich. And 250+ more poverty busting distinctions... Demand the Fastlane, an alternative road-to-wealth; one that actually ignites dreams and creates millionaires young, not old. Change lanes and find your explosive wealth accelerator. Hit the Fastlane, crack the code to wealth, and find out how to live rich for a lifetime.

Book excerpt: In the late 1960s, a new sport emerged in Canada that would change the lives of many people: wheelchair sports. In Life in the Fast Lane, Chris Stoddart recounts the rise of wheelchair racing, with him as one of its pioneers. Born with spina bifida—a condition that affects the development of the spine—Stoddart witnessed the extraordinary transformation of the wheelchair from a heavy and unwieldy functional contraption to a light and sleek design meant for the racetrack. From his beginnings as a wheelchair basketball player to his evolution into a three-time Paralympian and fifty-mile marathon racer, Stoddart shares his life journey as it parallels Canada’s rise in wheelchair sports. With a matter-of-fact but approachable tone, Stoddart shines a light on the many veterans of wheelchair sports who may have been forgotten over the years. Most notably, however, is this athlete’s dedication to people who live with disabilities. During his successful career as an amateur athlete, Stoddart worked for the War Amps of Canada for almost thirty years. Learn about the history of wheelchair racing in Canada, where we stand today, and what we need to do to make sure people with disabilities share the spotlight with able-bodied athletes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the mass protests of the 1960s, another, less heralded political force arose: public interest progressivism. Led by activists like Ralph Nader, organizations of lawyers and experts worked "inside the system." They confronted corporate power and helped win major consumer and environmental protections. By the late 1970s, some public interest groups moved beyond U.S. borders to challenge multinational corporations. This happened at the same time that neoliberalism, a politics of empowerment for big business, gained strength in the U.S. and around the world. No Globalization Without Representation is the story of how consumer and environmental activists became significant players in U.S. and world politics at the twentieth century's close. NGOs like Friends of the Earth and Public Citizen helped forge a progressive coalition that lobbied against the emerging neoliberal world order and in favor of what they called "fair globalization." From boycotting Nestlé in the 1970s to lobbying against NAFTA to the "Battle of Seattle" protests against the World Trade Organization in the 1990s, these groups have made a profound mark. This book tells their stories while showing how public interest groups helped ensure that a version of liberalism willing to challenge corporate power did not vanish from U.S. politics. Public interest groups believed that preserving liberalism at home meant confronting attempts to perpetuate conservative policies through global economic rules. No Globalization Without Representation also illuminates how professionalized organizations became such a critical part of liberal activism—and how that has affected the course of U.S. politics to the present day.

Born in a tavern, John Earnhardt was delivered by a praying Adventist nurse. Growing up during the early days of NASCAR, he spent much of his childhood playing around a racetrack with a boy named Dale Earnhardt. Both boys had blue eyes and brown hair. Many people thought they were brothers. Both families were bootleggers who became racers. But how different would be their destinies. Little Dale would become known as The Intimidator and be immortalized as a legend in NASCAR racing savoring 76 wins in Victory Lane. John, who used to lie on the bootleg beer in the back of his father's truck, would take a different road to glory. Not one paved with asphalt or filled with cheering fans, but it would lead to the ultimate Victory Lane. In this book Crystal Earnhardt exposes family secrets to share the miraculous story of how God's redeeming love can reach deep into the grease pits of sin, proving that there is no clay too difficult for Him to mold.
