Picking up where Volume 2 left off, Fast and Fun Korean for Short-Term Learners Volume 3 was designed and structured with the following basic principles in mind. First, this volume is designed to be used primarily in programs for adult learners of Korean currently residing short-term in Korea, and for learners residing abroad who are learning Korean through university programs that meet for 3 to 4 hours per week for 12 to 15 weeks, rather than for learners in intensive programs of around 200 hours per level. Second, each unit centers on a situation-based syllabus for learning; specifically, the units introduce a variety of situations that short-term learners of Korean will likely encounter while living in Korea. Third, in order to focus on practical expressions that are encountered often in real life and are in tune with the interests of learners, vocabulary and expressions useful in daily Korean life were chosen and woven throughout the text. Fourth, in terms of Korean proficiency level, mindful of maintaining an intermediate level just prior to an advanced level, this volume puts an emphasis on reinforcing vocabulary. The ‘Vocabulary Expansion’ corner, for example, is designed to help learners become more familiar with Sino-Korean vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Fifth, in place of a separate corner for cultural content, this volume includes aspects of Korean culture that are encountered when living in Korea in the dialogues and reading sections so that learners can be exposed to Korean culture in a natural way. Book excerpt: The Acquisition of German: Introducing Organic Grammar brings together work on the acquisition of German from over four decades of child L1 and immigrant L2 learner studies. The book’s major feature is new longitudinal data from three secondary school students who began an exchange year in Germany with no German knowledge and attained fluency. Their naturalistic acquisition process — with a succession of stages described for the first time in L2 acquisition — is highly similar to that of younger learners. This has important implications for German teaching and for the theory of Universal Grammar and acquisition. Organic Grammar, a variant of generative syntax, is offered as a practical alternative to Chomsky’s Minimalism. The analysis focuses on extensive monthly samples of the three students’ German development in an input-rich environment. Similar to previous studies, the teenagers build syntactic structure from the bottom up. Two acquired correct word order by the end of the year, the third, who had greater conscious awareness of German grammar, had a divergent route of development, suggesting that language awareness can alter a natural developmental path. The results are addressed in light of recent debates in child-adult differences.

Swedish Mentality, the English translation of the hugely successful book published in Sweden in 1989, considers the reality behind the myth. The author, Åke Daun, is a respected ethnologist who is sometimes referred to as the "guru" of Swedish character. In recent years, it has become popular to discuss Swedishness and Swedish identity. The advent of the European Union and the increasing presence of immigrant refugees in Sweden have fueled public debate on the distinctiveness of Swedish culture. Daun, however, goes beyond stereotype, drawing upon statistics gathered over more than a decade of research. The result is an entertaining and engagingly written book. Throughout, Daun quotes from interviews with native Swedes and immigrants as well as from travel accounts, folklore, and proverbs. We learn why some Swedes might prefer to walk up a flight of stairs rather than share an elevator with a neighbor and why some gain satisfaction from walking alone in the woods or going fishing. Daun describes a range of factors influencing Swedish character, including population composition, rural background, and even climate. He recognizes behavioral variations related to gender, age, class, and region, and he considers subtleties of individual character as well.
