The Institute was attended by ninety-seven participants representing the United States, West Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, and France. The objective of the Institute was to provide a broad but comprehensive presentation of the various measurement and analy sis techniques that can be employed to investigate fast physical events, nominally in the sub-microsecond regime. This requires both an understanding of the basic principles underlying the diagnostic employed and its limitations, and a knowledge of the practical techniques available to obtain reliable and repeatable data. This Institute was thus structured to begin tutorially, followed by more practical techniques, demonstrations, and discussions. The Institute was divided into the following major sections: (1) Overview of Applications and Needs; (2) Voltage and Current Measurements; (3) Data Acquisition; (4) Grounding and Shield ing; (5) Fast Photography; (6) Refractive Index Measurements; (7) X-ray Diagnostics; (8) Spectroscopy; and (9) Active Opti cal Techniques. This Proceeding has been divided into two separate volumes. Volume 1, Current and Voltage Measurements, includes Sections (1) through (4) above; Volume 2, Optical Meas urements, includes Sections (5) through (9).

Book excerpt: As optical fiber communication systems have moved out of the laboratory and into commercial use over the past several years, the general field of guided wave and coherent optics has undergone a radical transformation. Research in optical communication has turned heavily towards single-mode technology and, totally new phenomena and applications of the existing technology, outside the communication field, have begun to proliferate. It was for this reason that we decided to organize a NATO Advanced Study Institute assembling the leading workers in this new domain, in order to define the state of the art, and, develop an idea of the new directions the field might take. The lectures and seminars presented at this Advanced Study Institute form the basis for this book. The subjects treated can be roughly grouped as : - New phenomena in optical fibers such as non-linear effects, soliton propagation and polarization conservation. - New applications of fibers, to measurements of rotation pressure, temperature etc ... and medical uses. - Advanced and exploratory work on single-mode fiber communica tion systems including the use of coherent transmission schemes and optical amplification. - Recent developments of optical information treatment based on four-wave mixing. - Integrated optical devices and technologies including bistable devices, parametric oscillators, and optical logic. In addition to these major topics, a number of national reviews and specialized seminars treating new guided wave structures and materials are included. The co-editors admit being rather pleased with the result.

Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written.
