Book excerpt: The dimmed outlines of phenomenal things all into one another unless we put on the merge focusing-glass of theory, and screw it up some times to one pitch of definition and sometimes to another, so as to see down into different depths through the great millstone of the world James Clerk Maxwell (1831 - 1879) For a long time after the foundation of the modern theory of electromag netism by James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th century, the mathematical ap proach to electromagnetic field problems was for a long time dominated by the analytical investigation of Maxwell's equations. The rapid development of computing facilities during the last century has then necessitated appropriate numerical methods and algorithmic tools for the simulation of electromagnetic phenomena. During the last few decades, a new research area "Computational Electromagnetics" has emerged com prising the mathematical analysis, design, implementation, and application of numerical schemes to simulate all kinds of relevant electromagnetic pro cesses. This area is still rapidly evolving with a wide spectrum of challenging issues featuring, among others, such problems as the proper choice of spatial discretizations (finite differences, finite elements, finite volumes, boundary elements), fast solvers for the discretized equations (multilevel techniques, domain decomposition methods, multipole, panel clustering), and multiscale aspects in microelectronics and micromagnetics.

Book excerpt: In this work, an iterative approach using the finite difference frequency domain method is presented to solve the problem of scattering from large-scale electromagnetic structures. The idea of the proposed iterative approach is to divide one computational domain into smaller subregions and solve each subregion separately. Then the subregion solutions are combined iteratively to obtain a solution for the complete domain. As a result, a considerable reduction in the computation time and memory is achieved. This procedure is referred to as the iterative multiregion (IMR) technique. Different enhancement procedures are investigated and introduced toward the construction of this technique. These procedures are the following: 1) a hybrid technique combining the IMR technique and a method of moment technique is found to be efficient in producing accurate results with a remarkable computer memory saving; 2) the IMR technique is implemented on a parallel platform that led to a tremendous computational time saving; 3) together, the multigrid technique and the incomplete lower and upper preconditioner are used with the IMR technique to speed up the convergence rate of the final solution, which reduces the total computational time. Thus, the proposed iterative technique, in conjunction with the enhancement procedures, introduces a novel approach to solving large open-boundary electromagnetic problems including unconnected objects in an efficient and robust way. Book excerpt: Modeling and design of high frequency electronic systems such as antennas and microwave devices require the rigorous numerical solution of Maxwell's equations. The frequency-domain (time-harmonic) tangential vector nite element method (TVFEM) for Maxwell equations results in a second-order dynamical electromagnetic model that must be repeatedly solved for multiple frequencies, excitation or material parameters each design loop. This leads to extremely long design turnaround that often is not optimal. This work will propose an accurate, error controllable and ef cient multi-parametric model order reduction scheme that signi cantly accelerate these parameters sweep. At the core of this work is the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) sampling technique and balanced truncation (BT) algorithm that are used to reduce multi-parameter spaces that include frequency, material parameters and in nite array scan angles. The proposed methodology employs a novel computational scheme based on adaptive POD sampling and the singular value decomposition of the low-rank Hankel matrix. Numerical examples con rm the signi cant time savings and good accuracy of the method.

Book excerpt: Annotation Modern RF devices are built on a variety of technologies for a wide array of functionalities (cellular telephony, wireless data systems, radar, and many others). Design turnaround and performance gains found in the semiconductor device market are now expected in the RF circuit arena. Such work generally requires a full-wave electromagnetic simulator, and time domain techniques are particularly well suited to these devices. This lecture presents techniques that can be used to model complex microwave structures in multiresolution time domain method (MRTD). The authors' purpose is to present the MRTD technique to readers unfamiliar with wavelet analysis and who have little or no experience in numerical modeling. Advanced readers will benefit from the discussion of new MRTD techniques and examples. The first section of the lecture presents a general overview of the MRTD technique, as well as its properties and implementation. Subsequent sections focus on the implementation of the MRTD technique using Haar basis functions. Readers will find the Haar wavelets presentation a simple introduction to MRTD that also presents the framework for a powerful, adaptive simulator. In addition, the MRTD technique is presented as an adaptive alternative to finite difference time domain method (FDTD). This lecture includes a brief overview of the FDTD and several MRTD examples will be contrasted to FDTD.

Book excerpt: Multiscale problems naturally pose severe challenges for computational science and engineering. The smaller scales must be well resolved over the range of the larger scales. Challenging multiscale problems are very common and are found in e.g. materials science, fluid mechanics, electrical and mechanical engineering. Homogenization, subgrid modelling, heterogeneous multiscale methods, multigrid, multipole, and adaptive algorithms are examples of methods to tackle these problems. This volume is an overview of current mathematical and computational methods for problems with multiple scales with applications in chemistry, physics and engineering.
