Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A frequent problem in computational electromagnetics is to calculate the electromagnetic field far from a radiating object. This has numerous applications, such as antenna analysis and determining the radar cross sections of airplanes, ships, etc. Another application to converting near field measurements, taken in an indoor measurement range for instance, and transforming them to the far-zone. However, when the field of a large object needs to be calculated in many directions, however, this computation can take too long to be practical. The goal of this project is to develop an algorithm to greatly speed up this calculation by using a divide-and-conquer approach. First, the necessary background information in electromagnetics and numerical methods is presented. Then, a near to far field transform with potential for O(N^1.5) time complexity is discussed, where N is the number of basis elements used to approximate the object's surface. Finally, the running time and accuracy of the algorithm is discussed, with comparisons to another near to far field computer program for two problem geometries, a VFY-218 airplane with N = 53,054 and an antenna array with N = 106,792. The results show the fast near to far transform can be 30 times faster with an RMS relative error of 2.05e-5, compared to traditional methods.

Book excerpt: Two methods of synthesizing patterns from conical arrays were investigated during this period. In the first method the equivalence principle was used to synthesize patterns that are approximate duplicates of the patterns of representative planar arrays. This is done by evaluating on the surface of the cone the near field of a centrally located and mechanically steered hypothetical planar array. These near fields are used to calculate the required complex excitations of real elements on the surface of the cone to nearly duplicate the pattern of the hypothetical planar array. Patterns are presented of the results for two beam pointing directions. In the second method of synthesizing patterns from a conical surface, a heuristic approach was taken wherein the placement of the elements on the surface was based on extrapolations from linear and circular array theory and practice. Several element configurations are considered and numerous computer patterns are presented. The characteristics of these patterns are summarized by comparing in graphical form grating lobe levels, first sidelobe levels, and back-lobe levels for all of the patterns.
Book Synopsis Analysis and Optimisation of Array Antennas for Near-field Plane Wave Synthesis by : Neil Norman Jackson

This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiated electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing requires field distributions of uniform intensity throughout a test zone. This field condition is achieved within a plane wave. The use of the reflector-fed compact range for generating plane waves is well established for antenna measurements in the microwave frequency region. Extension of this technique into the sub-microwave range poses problems and this work investigates the applicability of antenna arrays for such tests. The basic problem is to determine suitable array element excitations in order to generate an approximate plane wave in the antenna near-field. Some general numerical synthesis techniques are described and shown to be applicable to arrays of arbitrary element composition and geometry. For concept verification, a prototype array of log-periodic dipole antennas was constructed and its performance accurately predicted using a computer model. Factors affecting the plane wave quality are discussed and adequate performance for some types of antenna measurements as well as for EMC testing is illustrated. One important factor influencing the plane wave quality is the geometrical arrangement of the array elements. A novel procedure for optimising the array element locations using a genetic algorithm is presented. Practical array design issues are addressed and the development of a computer-controlled wide-band feed network is presented. As an exercise in application of the array-illuminated compact range, its use to irradiate a sphere simulating the human head is discussed. Measurements of the field distribution were used to validate a finite-difference time-domain computer model of the system.

Book excerpt: The need to develop technology and communication necessitates the design of flexible and high-capacity radiating systems in today's communication infrastructure. In this context, antenna arrays are the ideal solution and have been one of the priority research subjects of the science community dealing with electromagnetics from past to present. Optimization of an array may be performed in various ways such as the optimization of excitation, reflector structure, feed network, etc. depending on the array structure. This book is a collection of seven research studies focused on the optimization of array structures in classical phased array or time modulation, including radiator, reflector, feed network, and radiating element optimizations.
