However, this degree of influence gradually declined and nowadays these ideologies cannot be said to exert much influence on the political landscape anymore. Therefore, this essay will proceed by firstly looking at the case of Italy and especially the Movimento Socialist Italiano’s (MSI) ideological development over the years. Secondly, the German political landscape after the Second World War (WWII) will be examined before proceeding with a comparison. This essay will argue that the development of the ER in their relation to the interwar ideologies was similar to a certain extent.

Starting with a historiographical assessment of the international situation, vis-à-vis studies on Fascism and National Socialism, and then concentrate on certain aspects that are essential to any study of the two dictatorships, namely the complex relationships with their respective societies, the figures of the two dictators and the role of violence. This volume reaches beyond the time-frame encompassing Fascism and National Socialism experiences, directing the attention also toward the period subsequent to their demise. This is done in two ways. Book excerpt: The first proto-fascist movements emerged before 1914 - in France, which had been defeated in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71; in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with its Pan-German movement and other nationalists; and in Russia, on the wave of the revolution of 1905. Traces the history of the fascist movements from their inception during and after World War I to their seizure of power (in Italy and Germany) and through World War II. The emergence of these groups took place against the background of the rise of political antisemitism, and antisemitism was an important element in their ideologies. However, it was the post-World War I political crisis and the series of "red revolutions" that gave rise to numerous fascist movements in Europe. Many of them were rabidly antisemitic, e.g. the German National Socialists, the Hungarian fascists, and the Romanian Iron Guard. Notes that Nazi antisemitism was singular among other fascist anti-Jewish ideologies, because of its strictly racist foundations - in this, the Nazis followed the German antisemitic tradition of the pre-1914 period. Nazi racism influenced fascist antisemitism in Hungary and in other countries.
