Excerpt: ...Station show that the recovery for nitrogen as nitrate was 62.09 parts per hundred; for the nitrogen as ammonia, 43.26 parts per hundred; and for organic (dried blood) nitrogen, 40 parts per hundred. With the returns from nitrate, the highest recovery regarded as 100, the relative availability of the nitrogen as ammonia would be G9.7 and of nitrogen as dried blood 64.4. These figures possess a very great practical significance, as they have a direct bearing upon the economical purchase and use of the nitrogen contained in the fertilizers now offered upon the market. Commercial conditions fix the price of the various nitrogenous materials, and the cost to the farmer of any one form is not measured by Its usefulness to him, but by the cost in the market. That is, there Is no strict relationship between commercial and agricultural values. It happens that at the present time a pound of nitrogen in the form of nitrate or of ammonia costs the farmer less than a pound of organic nitrogen; that is, the nitrogen possessing the highest rate of availability as nitrate is less expensive to him than dried-blood nitrogen, or even that derived from low-grade nitrogenous materials, which do not possess any definite rate and which must, on the average, show a much lower rate of availability than dried blood, because the mixtures contain nitrogen derived from many sources, not uniform In their content of nitrogen or in their physical character or constitution. Excerpt: ... if desired, may be placed in its usual position between the brood-chamber and the super, which should be placed on the new hive as soon as needed. REQUEENING. In transferring by Plan 5 or by the use of the transfer-tube (Plan 3), it would be well, if the beekeeper can do so, either to buy or to raise queens so that he may requeen at the same time the transferring is done. In that case the new queen may be placed in the prepared hive in the introducing cage and the new and old hives connected up as before described except that a bee-escape is placed in the entrance of the box-hive so that the returning bees can not enter the old hive but must remain with the queen in the new hive. The new queen will soon be released and will begin laying. In two or three weeks the box-hive may be removed and broken up. The bees may be shaken in front of the trap on the new hive in the manner previously described and the queen can then be found in front of the trap and may be killed or, if a good queen, may be caged and used in transferring another colony. TRANSFERRING FROM HOUSES OR FROM BEE-TREES. Transferring bees from the walls of a house or from a bee-tree may be accomplished by adapting the methods previously described to the conditions involved. If the bee-tree is cut down, the shock of the fall may so disorganize the colony that it will offer little or no resistance, and the transferring may be done by cutting out the combs and fitting them into the frames as described in Plan 1. The same method may be followed if the branch containing the colony is cut off and lowered to the ground. Excerpt: ...states that the well-cured hay is more nutritious than any hay produced from grass, millet, or any other plant used for the purpose, aud that one ton of it will last as long as a ton and a half of the best timothy. One hundred pounds of the green vines contain 60.4 pounds of total dry matter, of which 10 pounds are digestible. One hundred pounds of the hay contain 89.3 pounds of the total dry matter, of which 50.7 pounds are digestible. The digestible crnde protein in the hay amounts to 10.79 pounds in comparison with 10.58 for alfalfa, 10.49 for crimson clover, 6.58 for red clover, and 2.89 for timothy. The digestible carbohydrates and fat amount to 39.91 pounds in every 100 pounds of cowpea hay, 38.71 for alfalfa, 39.42 for crimson clover, 37.01 for red clover, and 45.15 for timothy. The average nutritive ratio of cowpea hay is 1:3.9; of alfalfa, 1:3.8; of crimson clover, 1:3.9; of red clover, 1:5.9; and of timothy, 1:16.2. The green cowpea vines are more succulent than red clover or any of the grasses, containing less dry matter per total weight. The feeding value of the hay is shown by the nutritive ratio which represents the relatiou of the digestible crnde protein to the carbohydrates and extract matter. Thus, for every pound of digestible crnde protein in cowpea hay there are 3.9 pounds of digestible carbohydrates and fat. In order to insure uniform growth of an animal and get the full feeding value of all the constituents of a forage, the ration must be properly balanced. The nutritive ratio of cowpea hay is narrower than can be properly utilized by the animal, and to get the full benefit of all the crnde protein in the plant, hay or coarse fodder containing an excess of the carbohydrates must be added to the daily ration.
