Book Synopsis Staying Safe on the Farm with Jaxon by : Mary Boomsma
Download or read book Staying Safe on the Farm with Jaxon written by Mary Boomsma and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was made in honor of Jaxon Liam Boomsma. In 2017, Jaxon was tragically killed in a farming accident when he was just seven years old. He loved nothing more than being on the farm. His bubbly personality and toothless smile will never be forgotten. To honor Jaxon, our family and the JLB Mission 23 Committee set up a memorial fund called the Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund. The JLB Mission 23 Committee was formed to help keep Jaxon’s smile alive, and consists of family and friends in the Yankton community. The Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund has helped enhance community parks and farm safety programs. We have also set up an annual scholarship for a Yankton High School senior who will study in an agricultural related field. Our main goal is to promote farm safety and keep kids safe. As a family we wanted to be able to keep Jaxon’s smile alive by helping make the places he loved safer and more beautiful for other kids. We also want to prevent more accidents from taking young lives too soon. To help donate or follow our journey, you can follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jaxonboomsma23/

Book Synopsis Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Research at NIOSH by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Research at NIOSH written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors are the cornerstone of industries that produce food, fiber, and biofuel. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research in order to improve worker safety and health in these sectors. This National Research Council book reviews the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program to evaluate the 1) relevance of its work to improvements in occupational safety and health and 2) the impact of research in reducing workplace illnesses and injuries. The assessment reveals that the program has made meaningful contributions to improving worker safety and health in these fields. To enhance the relevance and impact of its work and fulfill its mission, the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program should provide national leadership, coordination of research, and activities to transfer findings, technologies, and information into practice. The program will also benefit from establishing strategic goals and implementing a comprehensive surveillance system in order to better identify and track worker populations at risk.
Book Synopsis Harvest of Hazards by : Derek S. Oden
Download or read book Harvest of Hazards written by Derek S. Oden and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming has always been a dangerous occupation. In the middle of the twentieth century, as farmers adopted a wide array of new technologies, from tractors to pesticides and fertilizers, the dangers became more acute. The economic pressures that agriculture faced in this period compounded the perils of these powerful new tools, as farmers struggled to stay profitable in the face of widespread consolidation. In this study of the farm safety movement in the Corn Belt, historian Derek Oden examines why agriculture was so dangerous and why improvements were so difficult to achieve. Because farmers were self-employed business owners whose employees were mainly family members; because they lived far from aid such as hospitals and fire stations; and because they had to manage such a diverse array of new technologies, they could not easily adopt the workplace safety and public health reforms designed for factories and urban settings. In response, beginning in the 1940s, farmers and a new breed of farm safety specialists relied upon an increasingly elaborate educational campaign to lessen injuries and illnesses on the farm. Several government, business, and nonprofit organizations—from the US Department of Agriculture to the National Safety Council and 4-H and the Future Farmers of America—worked together to publicize both the dangers of farming and the information farmers needed to stay safe while driving tractors, applying anhydrous ammonia, or repairing machinery. By the 1960s, however, the partnership began to break down, and by the 1970s the safety movement became increasingly contested as professional and policy divisions emerged. This groundbreaking study incorporates agriculture into the histories of occupational safety and public health.

Book Synopsis Review of Safety Programs at Midsized, Non-Land Grant University Farms by : David Michael James
Download or read book Review of Safety Programs at Midsized, Non-Land Grant University Farms written by David Michael James and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OSHA ranks agriculture as the highest industry in per capita injury and deaths, and has so for many years (OSHA 2013). Agricultural production presents many hazards which may or may not be unique to this industry. Workers can face long hours, exposure to extreme heat and cold, aggressive animals, exposure to chemicals, and hazards regarding heavy equipment. University farms face many of the same problems as private production agriculture, with the added pressure of often being diverse operations with the constant presence of student workers, which have highly variable levels of experience. Based on the amount of hazards present, one would expect to see a high injury rate among university farm workers, but information surrounding injury rates as well as safety information at university farms appear to be absent from the record. The objective of this exploratory study is to build the knowledge base surrounding non-land grant university farms.
Book Synopsis Build Your Own Farm Tools by : Josh Volk
Download or read book Build Your Own Farm Tools written by Josh Volk and published by Storey Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josh Volk, author of the best-selling Compact Farms, offers small-scale farmers an in-depth guide to building customized equipment that will save time and money and introduce much-needed efficiencies to their operations. Volk begins with the basics, such as setting up a workshop and understanding design principles, mechanical principles, and materials properties, then presents plans for making 15 tools suited to small-farm tasks and processes. Each project includes an explanation of the tool’s purpose and use, as well as the time commitment, skill level, and equipment required to build it. Projects range from the super-simple (requiring a half-day to build) to the more complex, and include how-to photographs and illustrations with variations for customizing the finished implement. Along with instructions for building items such as simple seedling benches, a mini barrel washer, a DIY germination chamber, and a rolling pack table, Volk addresses systems design for farm efficiency, including how to design an effective drip irrigation system and how to set up spreadsheets for collecting important planning, planting, and market data.
