Book excerpt: High levels of support to the agricultural sector in OECD countries have raised average incomes, although there are still wide disparities by farm size, type and region and a higher incidence of low income among farm households. However, the great bulk of this support is still delivered through mechanisms that distort production and trade and are inefficient in generating increased net income for farmers. This report reviews the farm household income levels, discusses the influence of agricultural, tax and social security policies on them, and examines the effectiveness of commonly used policy interventions. It concludes that budgetary payments which are separated from agricultural activity and targeted to farm households that need them would transfer income much more efficiently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The central aim of the Common Agricultural Policy is to support the incomes of farmers, yet reliable information on the overall incomes of farmers and their households is scarce. In general, farmers in the EU are not a low-income or poor sector of society and much of the present CAP income support goes to those that are relatively well-off. This book, the 3rd edition to address these issues, has been updated and expanded to include: updated coverage of statistics and references; the major changes in methodology of income measurement flowing from the 1995 revision of the European System of Accounts; a critical examination of wealth and balance sheets for the agricultural industry as currently calculated; incorporation of material from Japan and countries in Central and Eastern Europe that are candidates for EU membership.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been supporting the incomes of the European Union's agricultural community for half a century. Despite this, there is still no official system in place to track the economic wellbeing of farmers and their families. This book examines the evidence on the overall wealth of farming households, and concludes that in nearly all member states, they are not generally a poor sector of society, with disposable incomes that are similar to, or exceed, the national average.

It sets out to analyze trends in farm household income, in particular, the nature and extent of low income farm households. It also aims to assess the factors underlying the emergence of the low income farm households and the effectiveness of farm income and general welfare policies in countering the lack of viability of the sector. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an overview of the financial characteristics and performance of the U.S. farm sector and farm bus., and the financial status of farm households. All three measures of farm income are projected to decline in 2009 ¿ net farm income, net cash income, and net value added. Uncertainty surrounds the forecasts of farm assets, debt, and equity in 2009, given the volatility of commodity, energy/input, and financial markets. Farm financial ratios monitoring liquidity, efficiency, solvency, and profitability show that the sector¿s financial performance in 2008-09, while slightly worse than in 2007, is quite favorable overall when compared to the 1980s and 1990s. In 2009, the largest declines in farm-bus. income are forecast for dairy farms. Illus.
