Book Synopsis Am I Disturbing You? by : Anne Hébert
Download or read book Am I Disturbing You? written by Anne Hébert and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Edouard, Stephane, and the spirited girl they find alone and apparently lost in Paris. When the two men offer the young Quebec girl shelter for the night, their lives are profoundly and irrevocably changed. Stephane falls quickly for Delphine, but Edouard, a man without expectations who hides from the world in a life of mediocrity and whose only desire is to live and die quietly, is slower to accept her. He is disturbed by Delphine's abrupt arrival in his life, her strange accent, her excessive passion. Then, just as he opens himself to her exuberance and vulnerability, he is torn violently from her and left to unravel the mysteries of her sudden presence and absence. Anne Hebert's fifth novel in translation (originally published under the title Est-ce que je te derange?) springs from a place between dream and reality, and offers a disturbing look into the workings of fascination and obsession. Tortured love, broken childhoods, and the forces of nature and death are woven into this extraordinary, poetic tale from one of Canada's most important writers.
Download or read book Pathways written by Steven McCann and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When my novel, ‘Pathways’ begins, we find our heroine, Angie Turner, employed full-time at a Bargain Store in her hometown of Paterson, New Jersey and attending the local community college. Angie is the best employee at work, the best student at her college and the stalwart support to her friends and wayward parents, a White mother and a Black father, although she rarely departs from her modest demeanor, despite her obvious exceptional abilities. Angie meets a recent Pakistani immigrant, falls in love, becomes pregnant and loses the father of her child when immigration officers remove him from the country, because of a flaw in his visa application. The daughter Angie gives birth to is stricken with a rare congenital neurological disorder, but neither this devastating setback, nor the difficulty of raising and supporting a disabled child as a single parent can prevent Angie from succeeding brilliantly through college, law school, and eventually, a career as a New York attorney.

Book Synopsis Structure and Variation in Language Contact by : Ana Deumert
Download or read book Structure and Variation in Language Contact written by Ana Deumert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a careful selection of fifteen articles presented at the SPCL meetings in Atlanta, Boston and Hawai'i in 2003 and 2004. The contributions reflect - from various perspectives and using different types of data - on the interplay between structure and variation in contact languages, both synchronically and diachronically. The contributors consider a wide range of languages, including Surinamese creoles, Chinook Jargon, Yiddish, AAVE, Haitian Creole, Afro-Hispanic and Afro-Portuguese varieties, Nigerian Pidgin, Sri Lankan Malay, Papiamentu, and Bahamian Creole English (Hackert). A need to question and test existing claims regarding pidginization/creolization is evident in all contributions, and the authors provide analyses for a variety of grammatical structures: VO-ordering and affixation, agglutination, negation, TMAs, plural marking, the copula, and serial verb constructions. The volume provides ample evidence for the observation that pidgin/creole studies is today a mature subfield of linguistics which is making important contributions to general linguistic theory.
