Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Award Finalist An Edgar Award Finalist A California Book Award Gold Medal Winner A dark, contemporary fairy tale in the tradition of Neil Gaiman. Jeremy Johnson Johnson hears voices. Or, specifically, one voice: the ghost of Jacob Grimm, one half of The Brothers Grimm. Jacob watches over Jeremy, protecting him from an unknown dark evil whispered about in the space between this world and the next. But Jacob can't protect Jeremy from everything. When coltish, copper-haired Ginger Boultinghouse takes a bite of a cake so delicious it’s rumored to be bewitched, she falls in love with the first person she sees: Jeremy. In any other place, this would be a turn for the better for Jeremy, but not in Never Better, where the Finder of Occasions—whose identity and evil intentions nobody knows—is watching and waiting, waiting and watching. . . And as anyone familiar with the Brothers Grimm know, not all fairy tales have happy endings. Veteran writer Tom McNeal has crafted a young adult novel at once grim(m) and hopeful, full of twists, and perfect for fans of contemporary fairy tales like Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and Holly Black's Doll Bones. The recipient of five starred reviews, Publishers Weekly called Far Far Away "inventive and deeply poignant."

Book excerpt: “Immersive, enchanting, and gripping, In A Far-Off Land is do-not-miss historical fiction.” —Patti Callahan, NYT Bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis It’s 1931 in Hollywood, and Minerva Sinclaire is on the run for a murder she didn’t commit. As the Great Depression hits the Midwest, Minerva Sinclaire runs away to Hollywood, determined to make it big and save the family farm. But beauty and moxie don’t pay the bills in Tinseltown, and she’s caught in a downward spiral of poverty, desperation, and compromise. Finally, she’s about to sign with a major studio and make up for it all. Instead, she wakes up next to a dead film star and is on the run for a murder she didn’t commit. Only two unwilling men―Oscar, a Mexican gardener in danger of deportation, and Max, a too-handsome agent battling his own demons―can help Mina escape corrupt police on the take and the studio big shots trying to frame her. But even her quick thinking and grit can't protect her from herself. Alone, penniless, and carrying a shameful secret, Mina faces the consequences of the heartbreaking choices that brought her to ruin . . . and just might bring her back to where she belongs.

Book excerpt: This is a book, my dear Turner, which I had in my heart to write for many years. The thought of it came to me with that other thought that I was growing—rather, grown—old; that the curtain had definitely been rung down on all the days of my youth. And so I got into the way of looking back, of recalling the far gone times and suns of the 'seventies and early 'eighties when the scene of my life was being set. I made up my mind that I would write about it all—some day. Some day would undoubtedly have been Never; if it had not been for you. I had not spoken of the projected book to you or anyone else; but one fine morning in 1915 you ordered me to write it! You were then, you will remember, editing the London Evening News, and as a reporter on your staff I had nothing to do but to obey. The book was written, appeared in the paper as "The Confessions of a Literary Man," and now reappears as "Far Off Things." So far, good. I enjoyed writing the book enormously; and, I frankly confess, I enjoy reading it. In a word, I am not grumbling. But there is one little point that I do not mean to neglect. My complacent views as to "Far Off Things" may not be shared by other and, possibly, more competent judges. And what I want to impress on you is this: that if there is to be trouble, "you are going to have your share of it." You ordered the book to be written, you printed it in your paper, you have urged me to reprint it, not once or twice, but again and again.

He opens with a melancholy description of the destroyed church at Arras, where trees no more than 4 years old grow by the side of the steps to the vanished entrance.

Book excerpt: Provocative and Enlightening Book Dissects the Human Consciousness “The Far-Off Land” philosophically evaluates the hallucinogenic drug-experience and intends to collect the perspectives of philosophy for better understanding of the human consciousness, Eugene Seaich attempts to dissect the human consciousness to provoke and enlighten the readers’ mind in The Far-Off Land, a revealing book that presents a philosophical evaluation of the hallucinogenic drug-experience. This book is a cerebral piece of literature that attempts to discover the broader realities that lie behind psychogenic phenomena and seek a pattern that will explain the longing of human being for the Beyond, for the otherworldly substance of their intuition. Seaich will take readers on a trip through millennia, offer them glimpses of the forthcoming and explore deeper his own psyche—and experiences with LSD and mescaline—in order for them to discover a more profound and broader understanding of the mind and human consciousness. Guided by a cardinal principle, Seaich captures the philosophical prospects and covers a great background of other relevant fields of study that promote psychotropic knowledge to better understand human consciousness— and to ultimately improve humanity’s cure to mental illness and even solve life’s mysteries. Filled with tremendous meaning and insight, revelations and wisdom, historical facts and quotes from the world’s greatest minds and literature, The Far-Off Land is an intelligent and poetic prose that will inform readers about human consciousness and inspire them about life, including its complexities.

Book excerpt: Drawing on Samuel Hearne’s gruesome account of an alleged massacre at Bloody Falls in 1771, Emilie Cameron reveals how Qablunaat (non-Inuit, non-Indigenous people) have used stories about the Arctic for over two centuries as a tool to justify ongoing colonization and economic exploitation of the North. Rather than expecting Inuit to counter these narratives with their own stories about their homeland, Cameron argues that it is the responsibility of Qablunaat to develop new relationships with northerners – ones grounded in the political, cultural, economic, environmental, and social landscapes of the contemporary Arctic.

His collection of writing illustrates his exceptional talent. Although he never complained about his ailments, they were pronounced and perhaps more serious than he realized. It was often, then, Danny’s intention to write material that would challenge the reader in ways that made people question their own biases. This book’s first section begins with the most developed and prominent piece in the collection, “Turn to Stone a Statue's Eye,” a novella which speaks to the reality of human greed and condemns selfishness. The next section includes short stories that often touch on more complex and challenging themes. To conclude, the collection ends with a compilation of poems and songs Danny hoped to turn to music. The themes vary in much of his poetry.
