Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capo is a tool of the trade. This will guide you through an understanding of how it works, and how to select the one that is right for you and your guitar. It is a theoretically correct method that relies mainly on an understanding of the fingerboard of the guitar; and which can be employed with any notational system. Lots of photos, examples, charts, and exercises are included. the author has created a systematic method that aids your understanding of note relationships, offers a practical application of Circle of Fifths, and works it all from the orientation of the guitar itself, so you also gain valuable knowledge about note relationships and chord shapes all over the fretboard.Since not all capos are created equal, a complete gallery of capos is presented to make your selection process that much easier.•

Book excerpt: This Mel Bay Qwikguide begins with basic music theory about scales and keys and teaches how to transpose several songs with and without the capo. Then we look at chords in keys and explore some typical chord progressions by swapping numbers (one, four, five) for the chord names (D, G, A). Finally we study the Nashville Numbering System in depth by examining different notation styles and converting several well-known songs to number charts. The more advanced number charts show detailed arrangements with modulations, intros, extros, a variety of chords, repeats, fermatas, strum patterns, beat accents, and much more. If you're interested in why the capo works as it does; if you're a songwriter or gigging musician who needs to know how to read, write, and understand Nashville Number charts, this book is for you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Style and Usage Guide to Writing About Music, Thomas Donahue presents a collection of guidelines to help express through the written word the special notations, terms, and concepts found in the discipline of music. It concentrates on questions of style and format in the interest of good formal writing within the context of United-States English, so that writers may communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. While compiling the guidelines, Donahue reviewed content from many other music and general guides. He documented the most common formats in order to assist the writer in selecting an appropriate format for the given circumstance when more than one may apply. The book draws on profuse musically-oriented examples and is arranged by topics both musical and typographic, such as the proper use and spelling of composer names and musical concepts; the use of notes, pitches, and octave delineations; letters and numbers employed to describe form and harmony; when, where, and how to apply compound words and hyphenation of terms and names; and the proper citation of musical and audiovisual sources. The book concludes with a glossary of typographic terms, a bibliography, and a comprehensive index, making this a valuable resource for students, scholars, teachers, and writers.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of his second year in Leipzig, J.S. Bach composed nine sacred cantatas to texts by Leipzig poet Mariane von Ziegler (1695-1760). Despite the fact that these cantatas are Bach's only compositions to texts by a female poet, the works have been largely ignored in the Bach literature. Ziegler was Germany's first female poet laureate, and the book highlights her significance in early eighteenth-century Germany and her commitment to advancing women's rights of self-expression. Peters enriches and enlivens the account with extracts from Ziegler's four published volumes of poetry and prose, and analyses her approach to cantata text composition by arguing that her distinctive conception of the cantata as a genre encouraged Bach's creative musical realizations. In considering Bach's settings of Ziegler's texts, Peters argues that Bach was here pursuing a number of compositional procedures not common in his other sacred cantatas, including experimentation with the order of movements within a cantata, with formal considerations in arias and recitatives, and with the use of instruments, as well as innovative approaches to Vox Christi texts and to texts dealing with speech and silence. A Woman's Voice in Baroque Music is the first book to deal in depth with issues of women in music in relation to Bach, and one of the few comprehensive studies of a specific repertory of Bach's sacred cantatas. It therefore provides a significant new perspective on both Ziegler as poet and cantata librettist and Bach as cantata composer.
