Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many different types of fine art photography, fantasy nudes are among the more creative and daring. Since we’re dealing in fantasy, anything is possible. It’s not necessary to travel to exotic locales for a shoot or for that matter, limit yourself to locales that exist at all! With a little imagination, simple lighting arrangements and some computer postproduction, it’s possible to simulate location shoots, create imagined locations or take a standard nude shot and make it into an exotic portrait. One of the benefits of creating images in this manner is that it frees the photographer up from needing a model to be in the right place at the right time. Working with preexisting nature or location shots, it’s possible to photograph a model in the comfort of a studio and then combine the images by compositing. Kirby presents dozens of examples where he employed this method to great success. While creating fantastical and striking backgrounds are a big part of Kirby’s work, thoughtful lighting plans when shooting the models is what makes the images really standout. He experiments with different ways of using his lights, sometimes creating his own DIY lighting units, and shares the details throughout the book. Matching the light in the studio to the light of the imagined location is imperative. Each photo in the book has an explanation of the concept for the image, details on the execution of the shoot, and a lighting diagram. In addition, the images are also accompanied by alternate photos or before-and-after shots. Not every image in the book is rooted in fantasy. There are dramatic studio portraits and unique nature shots all created in the same manner that Kirby employs for his fantasy shots. Working in this manner allows for more trouble-shooting options. Sometimes it is necessary to create an image under less than suitable conditions. For instance, say your shoot requires a summery scene in mid-winter. In one of the lessons, Kirby used a previously taken picture of a bright cloudy sky, added lighting to the model as if the shoot were being done outdoors and photographed the model in front of blue screen allowing him the option to drop her into the landscape photo afterwards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be made into a major motion picture—Self Portrait—starring Zoë Kravitz and Thomasin McKenzie Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, a "rich and thorny page turner" (Los Angeles Times) literary psychological horror about an ambitious young artist whose accidental photograph of a tragedy could jumpstart her career, but devastate her most intimate friendship. Lu Rile is a relentlessly focused young photographer struggling to make ends meet. Working three jobs, responsible for her aging father, and worrying that her crumbling loft apartment is being sold to developers, she is at a point of desperation. One day, in the background of a self-portrait, Lu accidentally captures an image of a boy falling to his death. The photograph turns out to be startlingly gorgeous, the best work of art she’s ever made. It’s an image that could change her life…if she lets it. But the decision to show the photograph is not easy. The boy is her neighbors’ son, and the tragedy brings all the building’s residents together. It especially unites Lu with the boy’s beautiful grieving mother, Kate. As the two forge an intense bond based on sympathy, loneliness, and budding attraction, Lu feels increasingly unsettled and guilty, torn between equally fierce desires: to advance her career, and to protect a woman she has come to love. Set in early 90s Brooklyn on the brink of gentrification, Self-Portrait with Boy is a “sparkling debut” (The New York Times Book Review) about the emotional dues that must be paid on the road to success and a powerful exploration of the complex terrain of female friendship. “The conflict is rich and thorny, raising questions about art and morality, love and betrayal, sacrifice and opportunism, and the chance moments that can define a life…It wrestles with the nature of art, but moves with the speed of a page-turner” (Los Angeles Times).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glamour subverts convention. Models, images, and even landscapes can skew ordinary ways of seeing when viewed through the lens of photography, suggesting new worlds imbued with fantasy, mystery, sexuality, and tension. In Old Fields, John Stilgoe—one of the most original observers of his time—offers a poetic and controversial exploration of the generations-long effort to portray glamour. Fusing three forces in contemporary American culture—amateur photography after 1880; the rise of glamour and fantasy; and the often-mysterious quality of landscape photographs—Stilgoe provides a wide-ranging yet concentrated take on the cultural legacy of our photographic history. Through the medium of "shop theory"—the techniques, tools, and purpose-made equipment a maker uses to realize intent—Stilgoe looks at the role of Eastman Kodak in shaping the ways photographers purchased cameras and films, while also mapping the divisions that were created by European-made cameras. He then goes on to argue that with the proliferation of digital cameras, smart phones, and Instagram, young people’s lack of knowledge about photographic technique is in direct correlation to their lack of knowledge of the history of glamour photography. In his exploration of the rise of glamour and fantasy in contemporary American culture, Stilgoe offers a provocative and very personal look into his enduring fascination with, and the possibilities inherent in, creating one’s own images.

Book excerpt: A memoir by photographic artist Jona Frank told in captivating stories and poignant images with a cast of actors, including Laura Dern and Imogene Wolodarsky, Cherry Hill tells the story of one girl's suburban youth and deliverance. Cherry Hill is a multimedia memoir of photographic artist Jona Frank's upbringing in--and flight from--a stifling suburban household. Told in words and evocative photographs, Frank's account of her childhood struggles with a repressive mother, mentally ill brother, and overwhelming expectations is leavened with episodes from her rich interior world. Akin to a graphic novel, this hybrid of personal essay and photography breaks open the memoir format, detailing the life of a young artist as she spends her days dreaming of a friendship with Emily Dickinson, longing for Bruce Springsteen and eschewing the rules of femininity. Frank employs a cinematic approach to construct vivid scenes from her youth. Using elaborately dressed sets, era-specific wardrobes, and multiple actors to portray herself as a child, Frank refashions her memories into vibrant tableaux. Strikingly, Frank cast Academy Award-winning actor Laura Dern in the role of her strict and complicated mother in a performance as bravura as her film and television work. As Frank outgrows the confines of her environment and suffocating domestic life, discovering art and photography as the path to her personal fulfillment, she plots her ultimate escape. A unique photographic storytelling project reminiscent of such classics as Fun Home and The Best We Could Do, Cherry Hill is an intimate self-portrait of what it takes to break free of convention and answer the question, "Who am I meant to be?"
