Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories by Foreign Authors The day had scarcely dawned. Over Vesuvius hung one broad gray stripe of mist, stretching across as far as Naples, and darkening all the small towns along the coast. The sea lay calm. Along the shore of the narrow creek that lies beneath the Sorrento cliffs, fishermen and their wives were at work already, some with giant cables drawing their boats to land, with the nets that had been cast the night before, while others were rigging their craft, trimming the sails, or fetching out oars and masts from the great grated vaults that have been built deep into the rocks for shelter to the tackle overnight. Nowhere an idle hand; even the very aged, who had long given up going to sea, fell into the long chain of those who were hauling in the nets. Here and there, on some flat housetop, an old woman stood and spun, or busied herself about her grandchildren, whom their mother had left to help her husband. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty More Famous Stories Retold It is now more than a year since you read my "Fifty Famous Stories." Those stories, as you will remember, are quite short and easy. Before you had finished your second year at school you could read every one of them without stopping to study the meaning of the words. Many thousands of children have read those fifty stories, and then they have asked for more; and this is my excuse for the present volume. You are older now, and you have learned many things which you did not know when we first became acquainted. You are able to read almost everything. And so, in telling you "Thirty More Famous Stories," I have chosen more difficult subjects and have not been so careful to select the shortest and easiest words. Still, you will not find this book hard to read, neither do I think it will prove to be less interesting than the earlier volume. Nearly all the stories are true, and there are not more than three or four that might not have happened. In every one there is something worth learning and remembering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greatest Nations, And, the World's Famous Events That first beginning of man, God's marvellous and mystic act of the creation of humanity, was once supposed to have taken place barely six thousand years ago; but we know now that our human race has inhabited earth for nearer sixty thousand years than six. Scientists incline today to the belief that there was only one creation, or in other words, that all mankind sprang from a single race. But the descendants of that race had spread abroad over every continent long before they became civilized enough to leave any conscious record of their lives. In almost every land today we find traces of these early cave-dwellers. In caverns or in excavations we stumble upon their crude stone-headed hammers, their roughly carved spear - heads, and even upon their own fossilized skeletons, bones which have outlasted the brief life of the body by hundreds of centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nightingale Being A story for children and A parable for men and women. N china, you must know, the Emperor is a Chinaman, and all whom he has about him are I Chinamen too. It happened a good many years ago, but that's just why it's worth while to hear the story before it's forgotten! The Emperor's Palace was the most splendid in the World; it was made entire ly of porcelain, very costly, but so delicate and brittle that one had to take care how one touched it. In the Garden were to be seen the most wonderful owers, and to the costliest of them silver bells were tied, which sounded, so that nobody should pass by without noticing the owers. Yes, every thing in the Emperor's Garden was admirably arranged. And it extended so far, that the Gardener himself did not know where the end was. If a man went on and on, he came into a glorious forest with high trees and deep lakes. The wood extended straight down to the sea, which was blue and deep; great vessels could sail beneath the branches of the trees, and in the trees lived a Nightingale, which sang so splendidly that even the poor Fisherman, who had many other things to do, stopped still and listened, when he had gone out at night to throw out his nets, and heard the N ightin gale. How beautiful that is! He said; but he was obliged to attend to his property and thus forgot the bird. But when in the next night, the bird sang again and the Fisherman heard it, he exclaimed again, H ow beautiful that is!tin at? From all the countries of the World, Travellers came to the City of the Emperor and admired it, and the Pal ace and the Garden, but when they heard the song of the Nightingale, they said: That is the best of all! And the Travellers told of it when they came home; and the learned men wrote many books about the Town, the Palace, and the Garden. But they did not forget the Nightingale; that was placed highest of all; and those who were Poets wrote most magnificent poems about the Nightingale in the wood, by the deep lake. The books went through all the World; and a few of them once came to the Emperor. He sat in his golden chair, and read, and read; every moment he nodded his head, for it pleased him to peruse the masterly descriptions of the City, the Palace, and the Garden. But the N i ghtin gale is the best of all it stood written there. What's that? Exclaimed the Emperor. I do not know the Nightingale at all! Is there such a bird in my Garden? I've never heard of that: to learn such a thing for the first time from books! And hereupon he called his Cavalier. This Cavalier was so grand that if any one lower in rank than himself dared to speak to him, or to ask him any question, he answered nothing but P! And that meant nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greatest Nations, Vol. 61: With One Thousand of the World's Famous Events Portrayed in Word and Picture He was a scholar and a statesman; but he was not a warrior. Perhaps Japan was fortunate in this; because all the warlike Japanese Samaurai were vehemently demanding to be led against the foreigners. Hitosubashi, however, saw clearly the impossibility of keeping the modern world perma hently excluded from Japan and so sought only to avoid all useless conflict. His tolerance brought him into conflict with the patriotic Samaurai. At first these took the matter up individually. If a foreigner ventured anywhere alone he was followed, attacked and slain. The foreign governments pro tested to Hitosubashi; he apologized but expressed his in ability to discover the assailants. It was hinted that, after all, the foreigners had better return to their own countries where they would be safer. We thought that all this wealth and prosperity were sent us by Providence, and could not stop coming. In our blindness we did not see that we were merely a big workshop, making up the things which came from all parts of the world; and that if other nations stopped send ing us raw goods to work up, we could not produce them ourselves. True, we had in those days an advantage in our cheap coal and iron; and had we taken care not to waste the fuel, it might have lasted us longer. The task of finding a new keeper fell to the United States consul living in Panama, and this task was no small one first, because it was ab solutely necessary to find the man within twelve hours; second, the man must be unusually con scientious, - it was not possible, of course, to take the first comer at random; finally, there was an utter lack of candidates. Life on a tower is uncommonly difficult, and by no means enticing to people of the South, who love idleness and the freedom of a vagrant life. That light-house keeper is almost aprisoner. He cannot leave his rocky island except on Sundays. A boat from Aspinwall brings him provisions and water once a day, and returns immediately; on the whole island, one acre in area, there is no ih habitant. The keeper lives in the light-house; he keeps it in order. During the day he gives signals by displaying flags of various colors to indicate changes of the barometer; in the even ing he lights the lantern. This would be no great labor were it not that to reach the lantern at the summit of the tower he must pass over more than four hundred steep and very high steps; sometimes he must make this journey re peatedly during the day. In general, it is the life of a monk, and indeed more than that, - the life of a hermit. It was not wonderful, therefore. These Stories are so captivating in their original form, that we almost regret, at first, that any attempt should be made to embellish them; and, indeed, nothing but the wit and cleverness of a Musaeus, or, on the other hand, the poetry and deep earnestness of a Tieck, could compensate for the loss of their simple beauty. However, we believe they may be relished in both ways and, without further preface, we commend the following specimens to the reader.same item.
