Download or read book Black Loyalists in New Brunswick written by Stephen Davidson and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Loyalists who were transported to the shores of New Brunswick by the British after their defeat by revolutionary Americans were several hundred African Americans. Like their counterparts who went to what is now Nova Scotia, among this group were formerly enslaved men, women and children who had been granted their freedom in exchange for joining the British side during the revolutionary war. In the colony that soon became New Brunswick, slavery was still legal. Many African American Loyalists had to become indentured labourers to survive in this new situation. Many others took up the opportunity offered them in 1791 to move yet again, this time to Sierra Leone in Africa where many Black Loyalists established a new colony on the coast of Africa where they lived free of slavery. The stories of New Brunswicks Black Loyalists are captured in the brief biographies of eight individuals—men, women and youths—presented by author Stephen Davidson. Through their experiences a picture emerges of the narrow limits to the freedom which the Black Loyalists were able to experience in a predominantly white and highly racist colony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Barnabé Martin and Jeanne Pelletret, son René, grandson Jean-Baptiste, and great-grandson Simon is the story of an Acadian family who developed a productive farm they left to escape the 1755 deportation. The family sought shelter along the lower Saint Lawrence during the French and Indian War, resettled on the central Saint John River until the arrival of the Loyalists after the American Revolutionary War, and resettled along the upper Saint John River. The work of 20 years, Our Acadian Martin Family History describes details of their daily lives and historical events impacting the family directly. Findlen takes readers to a richer understanding of an Acadian family's perilous journey from Acadia (Nova Scotia) to Northern Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. The book's genealogy not only supplies the genealogy of the Martin family but also provides the names of Acadians who served as godparents of baptized Martins and as witnesses to Martin marriages. Family historians and genealogists tracking their own Acadian families will find invaluable resources and leads for discovering their stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heinrich and Regina Stief left their homeland in 1749 and settled in Pennsylvania. From there, they and a small band of fellow settlers migrated to the rough terrain around New Brunswick's Peticodiac River. Faced with starvation, frigid winters, and abandonment by their sponsors-among them Benjamin Franklin-the settlers defied the odds by not only surviving but prospering. Steeves descendants now number upwards of 150,000 worldwide. Heinrich's tale has been told so many times that its parts have become legend. From the stories his earliest descendants told around the fire to the ones family historians have written and published since then, the facts surrounding Heinrich Stief, his roots, and his exploits have become confused, murky, and half remembered. Certain pieces of the puzzles has always eluded genealogists. Recently, a Stief family descendant with a knack for research and more than his share of luck has uncovered a piece of history that is as significant as it was elusive. Here, then, is Heinrich Stief's story, told as never before.

Book Synopsis Acadian Driftwood by : Tyler LeBlanc
Download or read book Acadian Driftwood written by Tyler LeBlanc and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Evelyn Richardson Award for Non-Fiction and Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing Finalist, Dartmouth Book Award for Non-Fiction, and the Margaret and John Savage Award for Best First Book (Non-fiction) A Hill Times' 100 Best Books in 2020 Selection On Canada's History Bestseller List Growing up on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Tyler LeBlanc wasn't fully aware of his family's Acadian roots -- until a chance encounter with an Acadian historian prompted him to delve into his family history. LeBlanc's discovery that he could trace his family all the way to the time of the Acadian Expulsion and beyond forms the basis of this compelling account of Le Grand Dérangement. Piecing together his family history through archival documents, Tyler LeBlanc tells the story of Joseph LeBlanc (his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather), Joseph's ten siblings, and their families. With descendants scattered across modern-day Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the LeBlancs provide a window into the diverse fates that awaited the Acadians when they were expelled from their homeland. Some escaped the deportation and were able to retreat into the wilderness. Others found their way back to Acadie. But many were exiled to Britain, France, or the future United States, where they faced suspicion and prejudice and struggled to settle into new lives. A unique biographical approach to the history of the Expulsion, Acadian Driftwood is a vivid insight into one family's experience of this traumatic event.
