Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine mothers' adherence to prescribed treatments for their children who have cystic fibrosis (CF). Specifically, the relations between (a) family functioning, (b) marital status, (c) coparental cooperation, and (d) mothers' adherence to prescribed treatments were examined. Three hundred and eighteen mothers of children with CF who were less than 18 years of age from six major Cystic Fibrosis Centers participated in this study. Two hundred and sixteen first married mothers, 53 remarried mothers, and 39 single mothers responded to a mailed booklet of questionnaires that included the following instruments: Family Time and Routines Index (McCubbin & Thompson, 1987), Family Sense of Coherence Scale (Antonovsky & Sourani, 1988), a revised version of the Quality of Coparental Communication Instrument (Ahrons, 1987), Maternal Evaluation of Child Impairment Scale (Walker, Ford, & Donald, 1987), a maternal adherence questionnaire, and demographic questions. Although there were no marital status differences in mothers' perception of family coherence or family time and routines, significant marital status differences were found on all seven Coparenting scales. Single mothers scored significantly lower on each of the Coparenting scales than married mothers. No significant differences among the marital statuses were found in the number of treatments ordered as part of the child's treatment plan, the number of times per day treatments were ordered, the number of times per day treatments were done, the number of treatments done by the mother, the number done by the child per day and adherence measures. Mothers were the primary caregivers and were involved in the treatments most of the time, regardless of marital status. There were no differences between the mothers of different marital statuses in how frequently they participated in doing the treatments. There were differences in how frequently they received help. Married mothers were helped more often by the child's father than single and remarried mothers were helped by their coparents. A series of stepwise multiple regressions indicated that child's health and child's age were better predictors of adherence than family and coparental cooperation.
