Book excerpt: Bear on the Stairs is definitely a unique book. This author put his heart and soul into the general theme, illustrations and text. Any family with a disabled member should appreciate the value and joy the disabled individual can contribute to the family setting, stability and environment. My philosophy is that those people we label as "disabled" are truly normal. They act up and have what we consider as bad behavior. Actually, they are frustrated, aggravated and dissatisfied about some negative aspect of their lives which (1) they cannot control; (2) they desire to change and (3) they cannot verbally and adequately express their feelings about. This supposed bad behavior should alert parents and caregivers to discover what is wrong and provide a satisfactory solution to the difficulty. Those of us considered to be "normal" choose to hate, be bigots, create dissension and engage in warfare. This author was born in Massachusetts. My favorite hobbies are mineral and fossil collecting, writing and illustrating. I have lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and Florida. This is my third published manuscript. I currently reside in Augusta,

Book excerpt: A compelling and colourful memoir that takes the reader inside the forgotten world of domestic service. Arriving at the great houses of 1920s London, fifteen-year-old Margaret's life in service was about to begin... As a kitchen maid - the lowest of the low - she entered an entirely new world; one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and even bootlaces to be ironed. Work started at 5.30am and went on until after dark. Yet from the gentleman with a penchant for stroking the housemaids' curlers, to the heartbreaking story of Agnes the pregnant under-parlourmaid, fired for being seduced by her mistress' nephew, Margaret's tales of her time in service are told with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye for the prejudices of her situation.
