Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fall and Spring Descriptive Catalog, 1922-1923: Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Vines, Etc With the revival of interest in old-fashioned gardens. A new enthusiasm has awakened in all parts of the South for boxwood, which-planted by our ancestors - have stood the test of time and remain today a living monument to their memory. Nothing will ever take the place of boxwood in the gardens of the South. Realizing the value of boxwood, not only because of sentiment but also because of its true merits as a hardy, long lived, compact evergreen, we began a few years ago to propagate them in large quantities. We have about four acres in boxwood in different varie ties and sizes, ranging mostly from 12 inches to 36 inches, all of which has been trimmed and transplanted. It is in thrifty state of growth, and those who contemplate plant ing a quantity we would be very pleased to have inspect the plants at our nurseries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Small Fruits, Vines, Roses, Shrubs, Etc., Etc In both standard and dwarf trees, it will be usually found a safe rule to cut back in pruning at transplanting one-half the growth of the previous season. The ends of the larger roots should be made smooth with a sharp knife where they have been roughly cut by the spade in digging, as new roots will form and the injured parts heal more readily with this attention. Planting - The holes should be dug large enough in the first place to receive the roots of the tree without' cramping or bending them from their natural posi tion. The tree having been properly pruned, should be held upright and the earth filled in about the roots, the finest and best soil from the surface being worked in among them, filling every space and bringing every root fully in contact with it. In extremely dry weather a pail of water may be poured upon the earth, to settle it about the roots, but this is seldom necessary. Finish the planting by placing soil enough about the tree to raise it somewhat higher than elsewhere, and press the soil carefully down with the foot. Care must be taken against planting too deep; when the earth settles about the tree it should stand at the same height as when in the Nursery, When set in autumn it is well to raise a mound of earth about the trees a foot or more in height. This will keep them from being swayed by the winds or thrown out by the frost during the winter. It should be removed in the spring. In planting dwarf trees the stock on which they are budded, and no more, should be under ground. They will then stand firmly and will not lose their dwarf character by the rooting of the standard stock. Staking - If trees are tall or in exposed situations, they should be supported by stakes to prevent injury from the action of the wind. Staking is done in the best manner by driving two strong stakes firmly in the ground, one on each side of the tree about a foot distant from it, and fastening the tree between them with bands of straw or other soft material, so that it may be kept in an upright position without chafing until the roots obtain a firm hold upon the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Descriptive Price-List for Fall of 1897 and Spring of 1898: Of the Fruit, Ornamental Trees, Vines, Plants, Etc Sons - The soil for all sorts of fruit trees must be dry naturally. They will not flourish in wet land. Deep tile drainage has not proven satisfactory with us, trees being more subject to disease, and are short-lived. Rich land is preferable, but our success on very poor land has been quite satisfactory. We like a gravelly or clay soil, but neither is indispensable. Location - High, dry, and airy locations are best, as trees are less apt to winter-kill or blight, and are more apt to escape spring frost than on low land. Time TO plant - Transplanting may be done at any time when the ground is in working order, from the cessation of growth in fall until the buds have opened in the spring; but we much prefer fall or early winter planting for the following reasons The earth will become well settled about the roots, cut surfaces will heal over and new rootlets will be thrown out in the soil, ready to start the buds at the first impulse of nature in spring Yet we have been quite successful with spring planting, but the trees do not make quite as much growth the first season. Treatment ON arrival - Take them to the land you wish to plant, open a trench two feet wide and a foot or more deep, untie the bundle, take one tree at a time and stand them as quickly as possible in the trench, and then throw in fine, moist earth among them until the roots are covered a foot or more. When plant ing only take out a few at a time. If desired, they can remain in trenches in good condition until spring. Should they be dry or shrivelled from exposure, immerse the whole tree in water for twenty-four hours, and if in a frozen condition put them in a cool, dark place (free from frost), and allow them to thaw before h'eeling in or planting out. This keeps the earth moist and of even temperature. After-culture. - Grass should not be allowed to grow about young trees or plants.
