Using the biblical Beatitudes as a framework, author Cheryl Heckler-Feltz pieces together an intriguing patchwork quilt of stories about how these distinguished women have been a blessing to our nation. The First Ladies indeed embody the highest ideals: "Blessed are the poor in spirit...Blessed are those who mourn...Blessed are the meek...Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness...Blessed are the merciful...Blessed are the pure in heart...Blessed are the peacemakers...Blessed are those who are persecuted."" "From the self-sacrifice of Martha Washington, who aided the wounded, cold, and hungry soldiers at Valley Forge, to the deep caring of Eleanor Roosevelt, who championed peace through the United Nations, to the indomitable spirit of Hillary Clinton, who has endured perhaps the most vicious personal attacks in the media, we get glimpses into the faith that made it possible for the First Ladies to survive the White House years. Through their words and deeds, as well as their counsel to the presidents, our First Ladies have shaped this nation and have left their mark on world history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Whether living in a rectory, manse or parsonage, life married to a small town minister calls for faith, hope, and charity; plus heaping helpings of tact and the skin of a rhinoceros. New to this life in the small coastal town of Bannoch, Oregon, Naidenne Davidson turns for support to her fellow ministers' wives of The First Ladies Club. The women share sympathy, friendship and tips on dealing with difficult church members, but when tall, shapely Naidenne catches the eye of an escaped killer, the Club goes beyond mere friendship. Step into the quaint parlor of the drafty Bannoch Community Fellowship parsonage, nibble a Snickerdoodle, sip your tea from a chipped china cup and share the adventure. A few scenes may be too intense for a traditional cozy, but never fear, Gentle Reader, evil is vanquished and good will prevail. Part-time realtor and full-time pastor's wife, Naidenne Davidson, is too busy coping with life in a small town church parsonage to think about her beauty, let alone imagine what sort of jealousy, envy or desire she is inspiring in the hearts of those around her. Distracted by efforts to fulfill her new duties as unpaid pastoral assistant, Naidenne is caught off guard and no match for the sociopathic killer who abducts her, bent on living out his basest desires. After two suspicious deaths and three disappearances in the small seaside community, law enforcement officials concentrate their suspicions on Naidenne's husband, Scott. Have the pressures of the pastorate driven Scott to do something terrible? Or are the authorities wasting precious time, with Naidenne's life hanging in the balance? When even members of Scott's congregation begin to wonder about his guilt, can Naidenne's friends in the First Ladies Club, help? Can these women of diverse denominations, ethnicity, cultures and ages put aside their differences and work in harmony to find her? Old friend, Bunny Elder Banks, arrives from Texas to join the search, but is it already too late?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although overshadowed by her higher-profile successors, Lou Henry Hoover was in many ways the nation’s first truly modern First Lady. She was the first to speak on the radio and give regular interviews. She was the first to be a public political persona in her own right. And, although the White House press corps saw in her “old-fashioned wifehood,” she very much foreshadowed the “new woman” of the era. Nancy Beck Young presents the first thoroughly documented study of Lou Henry Hoover’s White House years, 1929–1933, showing that, far from a passive prelude to Eleanor Roosevelt, she was a true innovator. Young draws on the extensive collection of Lou Hoover’s personal papers to show that she was not only an important First Lady but also a key transitional figure between nineteenth- and twentieth-century views on womanhood. Lou Hoover was a multifaceted woman: a college graduate, a lover of the outdoors, a supporter of Girl Scouting, and a person engaged in social activism who endorsed political involvement for women and created a program to fight the Depression. Young traces Hoover’s many philanthropic efforts both before and during the Hoover presidency—contrasting them with those of her husband—and places her public activities in the larger context of contemporary women’s activism. And she shows that, unlike her predecessors, Hoover did more than entertain: she revolutionized the office of First Lady. Yet as Young reveals, Hoover was constrained as First Lady by her inability to achieve the same results that she had previously accomplished in her very public career for the volunteer community. As diligently as she worked to combat the hardship of the Depression for average Americans by mobilizing private relief efforts, her efforts ultimately had little effect. Although her celebrity has paled in the shadow of her husband’s negative association with the Great Depression, Lou Hoover’s story reveals a dynamic woman who used her activism to refashion the office of First Lady into a modern institution reflecting changes in the ways American women lived their lives. Young’s study of Hoover’s White House years shows that her legacy of innovation made a lasting mark on the office and those who followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To every married man of the cloth that’s in high office of a bishop, pastor, or apostle, that has a church building or a place of worship, the title of First Lady automatically becomes a part of her life, whether they have the right spirit or not. When you search the word First Lady, you will find that the only definition is the wife of the president of the United States. In most denominations, pastor’s wives are First Ladies in the church world. It sounds distinguished and looks glamorous, but all it means is you are the wife of a leader of an organization. Being a married couple, you are one, so that means his load becomes your load and his hurts becomes your hurt and so on. Being in ministry and being the wife of a pastor is a very serious position in the body of Christ; you must be supportive in every way, working diligently for the kingdom of God. I’ve seen, met, and fellowshipped with many of them and came to the realization that the characteristics of a First Lady (wife of a pastor) must be spiritual. Some First Ladies sit like trophies on a shelf, looking beautiful, shinning like a diamond, but as she began to sit and look like a queen, without the love and spirit of God living on the inside of her heart, dust will begin to land on the surface of her heart clogging up her ears, blinding up her eyes, and showing fourth what the Bible calls the spirit of darkness. As you begin to read and meditate on the spirit of a First Lady, you will see how having the spirit of God living inside you makes the difference in dealing with people who the word of God call souls weather there in or out of the church. You will also see that underneath that exquisite hat is a radiant smile, a heart full of praise, and a never-ending blessing.

With great care she distinguishes the literary images from historical fact. Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Five Presidents and The Kennedy Detail comes an “insightful and beautifully told look into the life of one of the most public and admired first ladies” (Publishers Weekly)—Betty Ford. Betty Ford: First Lady, Women’s Advocate, Survivor, Trailblazer is the inspiring story of an ordinary Midwestern girl thrust onto the world stage and into the White House under extraordinary circumstances. Setting a precedent as First Lady, Betty Ford refused to be silenced by her critics as she publicly championed equal rights for women, and spoke out about issues that had previously been taboo—breast cancer, depression, abortion, and sexuality. Privately, there were signs something was wrong. After a painful intervention by her family, she admitted to an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. Her courageous decision to speak out publicly sparked a national dialogue, and in 1982, she co-founded the Betty Ford Center, which revolutionized treatment for alcoholism and inspired the modern concept of recovery. Lisa McCubbin also brings to light Gerald and Betty Ford’s sweeping love story: from Michigan to the White House, until their dying days, their relationship was that of a man and woman utterly devoted to one another other—a relationship built on trust, respect, and an unquantifiable chemistry. Based on intimate interviews with her children, Susan Ford Bales and Steven Ford, as well as family, friends, and colleagues, Betty Ford is “a vivid picture of a singularly influential woman” (Bookpage).
