Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith in Christ We have invented new instruments for our science, more revolutionary in their way than the steam-engine and the motor car. We have developed new processes of thought, more revolutionary still. We have shifted our point of view from its previous proud position at the centre of the universe to a very modest location on a satellite of one of an innumerable con glomeration of suns. Altogether we have achieved for ourselves a new world more radically than if we had packed our baggage and migrated to Mars. One need not be surprised, therefore, if the ancient theologies seem to the ordinary man of to-day, not merely unsatisfactory, which would be bad enough, but uninteresting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Man's Faith Nay, more, I own to considering it a desir able thing, and I presume I must thereby be con tent to write myself down a prejudiced witness henceforth. Yet I do not consider this a stulti fying statement. I want to believe in Jesus Christ because I want to attain the ends I know such a faith insures. I consider faith, as Peter did, a precious thing. I believe it can make me master of myself and of the world, as John did. I do not expect it to be based on the wis dom of to-day altogether. I believe with Paul that it is well based, not on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God, which I see it exemplify. Where would it have been if based on the wisdom of Paul's day? As he most wisely said, Our knowledge is incomplete. It will be cast aside. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science, the Faith and Its Founder This volume grew out of a booklet of mine which was never regularly published, but for which there soon came to be a large demand from all parts of the country. It was at the suggestion, altogether unexpected, of G. P Putnam's Sons that I have expanded the monograph into a book. My purpose, as the reader will discover, has been to write a book in which the average man who is outside of Christian Science can find the things he wants to know about its theory and practice. If to my readers it may now and then appear that I unduly emphasise the defects of the system, I ask them to Observe that the good in Christian Science is the good in other religions and therefore requires no special emphasis, while the evil is distinctive and needs analysis and publicity to make it evident.
