Book excerpt: Over the centuries since the Great Schism between the Eastern and Western Churches, the two groups have diverged to the point that they often no longer understand each other's vocabulary, let alone the fundamental concepts on which each faith is built. Know the Faith is an attempt to present Orthodox Christianity in a way Western Christians can understand, grounding each point in Scripture and patristic theology, with comparisons to what Catholics and Protestants believe.Whether you are an Orthodox Christian seeking to explain your faith to others or an inquirer into this ancient faith, Know the Faith will help you understand and communicate the Orthodox faith as never before.

Authors of each meditation have delved deeply into the sins and shortcomings of their own hearts, enabling readers to share in a collective human experience-from darkness to light, from despair to hope, and from isolation to commonality in the body of Christ-as they move steadily toward our Lord's Resurrection. The first edition of this book (titled A Journey through Great Lent, edited and authored by Archpriest Steven John Belonick, with coauthors Michele Constable and Michael Soroka), was published by Light & Life Publishing in 1998.

Book excerpt: "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth."--3 John 4 Never Too Late is full of practical and biblical wisdom to guide parents trying to reach their adult children for Christ. The four biblical principles outlined in this time-tested resource have been honed at the popular Never Too Late conferences organized by Visionary Family Ministries. Most importantly, this book has been an encouragement for parents desperately wanting their children to have deep faith and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Writing with compassion and honesty, pastor Rob Rienow shares a powerful message of hope: it's never too late to point an adult child's heart toward God. "Parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents will find practical help in this book to build closer relationships with their children. . . . Rob reminds us we . . . must hold fast to the goal of our children placing their full faith and trust in Christ. . . . You will richly benefit from reading this book." --John White, Wheaton Bible Church "Rob Rienow has done an incredible job of capturing the burden that so many parents feel for their adult children. . . . Never Too Late brings you hope even in the midst of painful times." --Jim Burns, author of Confident Parenting.

Book excerpt: ECPA Christian Book Award Finalist Your Battle against Porn Isn't about Porn. It's about Hope. Pornography may seem inescapable, but God can free us from its destructive power. The gospel replaces the dehumanizing lies of pornography with this surprising truth: God created us as royalty. How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? In The Death of Porn, Ray Ortlund writes six personal letters, as from a father to his son. Ideal for individuals and small groups, it will give hope to men who have been misled by porn into devaluing themselves and others. Through Scripture and personal stories, Ortlund assures readers that God loves them the most tenderly in their moments of deepest shame. The Death of Porn inspires men to come together in new ways to fight the injustice of porn and build a world of nobility for every man and woman—for the sake of future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new examination of how and why American religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children The most important influence shaping the religious and spiritual lives of children, youth, and teenagers is their parents. A myriad of studies show that the parents of American youth play the leading role in shaping the character of their religious and spiritual lives, even well after they leave home and often for the rest of their lives. We know a lot about the importance of parents in faith transmission. However we know much less about the actual beliefs, feelings, and activities of the parents themselves, what Christian Smith and Amy Adamczyk call the "intergenerational transmission of religious faith and practice." To address that gap, this book reports the findings of a new national study of religious parents in the United States. The findings and conclusions in Handing Down the Faith are based on 215 in-depth, personal interviews with religious parents from many traditions and different parts of the country, and sophisticated analyses of two nationally representative surveys of American parents about their religious parenting. Handing Down the Faith explores the background beliefs informing how and why religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children; examines how parenting styles interact with parent religiousness to shape effective religious transmission; shows how parents have been influenced by their experiences as children influenced by their own parents; reveals how religious parents view their congregations and what they most seek out in a local church, synagogue, temple, or mosque; explores the experiences and outlooks of immigrant parents including Latino Catholics, East Asian Buddhists, South Asian Muslims, and Indian Hindus. Smith and Adamczyk step back to consider how American religion has transformed over the last 100 years and to explain why parents today shoulder such a huge responsibility in transmitting religious faith and practice to their children. The book is rich in empirical evidence and unique in many of the topics it explores and explains, providing a variety of sometimes counterintuitive findings that will interest scholars of religion, social scientists interested in the family, parenting, and socialization; clergy and religious educators and leaders; and religious parents themselves.
