Book excerpt: Fairy Tales Book "Hans in Luck" is a fairy tale of Germanic origin, recorded by the Brothers Grimm. Fairy Tales Book Hans was a faithful and honest servant and his master granted him a piece of gold. Hans was however not satisfied. This piece was too heavy to carry around all the time. So he traded it for a horse. Then he got tired of the horse as well and traded it for a goose. The story repeated itself several times. And in the end, he found himself with stones. Did he outwit everyone or he actually did not realize how much he lost? Fairy Tales Book Hans in Luck has been described as an ironic fairy tale that inverts the normal "rags to riches" story format. Instead, it can be interpreted as anti-materialistic as Hans trades in his newly won treasures and expresses relief to be freed from the weight to return home happily. It can also be set apart from many other folks and fairy tales as it avoids romantic themes such as damsels and princesses; instead of focusing upon maternal love as Hans is returning home to see his mother. Fairy Tales Book Hans has been working hard for seven years but wishes to return to see his poor mother. His master pays him his wages which amounts to a lump of gold the size of his head. Hans puts the gold in a handkerchief and starts out on his journey jogging but soon becomes tired. He spots a rider on horseback and seeing the ease at which the horse travels he offers to exchange his lump of gold for the horse. Happy with the exchange, the man gives him the horse and Hans rides off. Book excerpt: Fairy Tales Book "The Queen Bee" is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm's Fairy Tales. Fairy Tales Book The Queen Bee Two kings’ sons once upon a time went into the world to seek their fortunes; but they soon fell into a wasteful foolish way of living, so that they could not return home again. Then their brother, who was a little insignificant dwarf, went out to seek for his brothers: but when he had found them they only laughed at him, to think that he, who was so young and simple, should try to travel through the world, when they, who were so much wiser, had been unable to get on. However, they all set out on their journey together and came at last to an anthill. The two elder brothers would have pulled it down, in order to see how the poor ants in their fright would run about and carry off their eggs. But the little dwarf said, ’Let the poor things enjoy themselves, I will not suffer you to trouble them.’ The Queen Bee Fairy Tales Book The Queen Bee Two sons of a king went out to seek their fortunes but fell into disorderly ways. The third and youngest son, the Simpleton, went out to find them, but they mocked him. They traveled on, and Simpleton prevented his brothers from destroying an anthill, killing some ducks, and suffocating a beehive with smoke. Then they came to a castle with stone horses in the stable, and no sign of anyone. They hunted through the castle and found a room with a little gray man, who showed them to dinner. In the morning, he showed the oldest son a stone table, on which were written three tasks. Whoever performed them would free the castle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Complete Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales (over 200 fairy tales and legends)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and his brother Wilhelm (1786-1859) were philologists and folklorists. The brothers rediscovered a host of fairy tales, telling of princes and princesses in their castles, witches in their towers and forests, of giants and dwarfs, of fabulous animals and dark deeds. Together with the well-known tales of «Rapunzel», «The Goose-Girl», «Sleeping Beauty», «Hansel and Gretel» and «Snow White» there are the darker tales such as «Death's Messengers» which deserve to be better known, and which will appeal not only to all who are interested in the history of folklore, but also to all those who simply love good storytelling. The two brothers wished to preserve their German folklore in a collection of tales that they believed had been handed down for generations. When they began in 1812 they had just 86 stories that rather harshly reflected the difficult life of European peasantry. Subsequent editions would grow to hold over 200 tales. As time passed, the Brothers Grimm found that their collection of fairy tales, with all of its royalty, magical creatures, and brave adventures, entranced those who read them. This compilation of fairy tales which includes the complete canon of over 200 tales has become a beloved set of classical stories the world over. Content: THE GOLDEN BIRD, HANS IN LUCK, JORINDA AND JORINDEL, THE TRAVELLING MUSICIANS, OLD SULTAN, THE STRAW, THE COAL, AND THE BEAN, BRIAR ROSE, THE DOG AND THE SPARROW, THE TWELVE DANCING PRINCESSES, THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE, THE WILLOW-WREN AND THE BEAR, THE FROG-PRINCE, CAT AND MOUSE IN PARTNERSHIP, THE GOOSE-GIRL, THE ADVENTURES OF CHANTICLEER AND PARTLET, RAPUNZEL, FUNDEVOGEL, THE VALIANT LITTLE TAILOR, HANSEL AND GRETEL, THE MOUSE, THE BIRD, AND THE SAUSAGE, MOTHER HOLLE, LITTLE RED-CAP [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD], THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, TOM THUMB, RUMPELSTILTSKIN, CLEVER GRETEL, THE OLD MAN AND HIS GRANDSON, THE LITTLE PEASANT, FREDERICK AND CATHERINE, SWEETHEART ROLAND, SNOWDROP, THE PINK, CLEVER ELSIE, THE MISER IN THE BUSH, ASHPUTTEL, THE WHITE SNAKE, THE WOLF AND THE SEVEN LITTLE KIDS, THE QUEEN BEE, THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER, THE JUNIPER-TREE, THE TURNIP, CLEVER HANS, THE THREE LANGUAGES, THE FOX AND THE CAT, THE FOUR CLEVER BROTHERS, LILY AND THE LION, THE FOX AND THE HORSE, THE BLUE LIGHT, THE RAVEN, THE GOLDEN GOOSE, THE WATER OF LIFE, THE TWELVE HUNTSMEN, THE KING OF THE GOLDEN MOUNTAIN, DOCTOR KNOWALL, THE SEVEN RAVENS, THE WEDDING OF MRS FOX, THE SALAD, THE STORY OF THE YOUTH WHO WENT FORTH TO LEARN WHAT FEAR WAS, KING GRISLY-BEARD, IRON HANS, CAT-SKIN, SNOW-WHITE AND ROSE-RED etc.

Book excerpt: Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder- und Hausm?rchen), commonly known as Grimms' Fairy Tales (German: Grimms M?rchen), is a collection of German fairy tales published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers Grimm. On December 20, 1812, the Grimms published the first volume of the first edition. It contained 86 stories. The second volume of 70 stories was published in 1814. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also deleted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because they were considered unsuitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions ? such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such criticism. They removed sexual references―such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus na?vely revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her stepmother―but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825, the Grimms published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition," a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence. Among those influenced were the Russian Alexander Afanasyev, the Norwegians Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, the English Joseph Jacobs, and Jeremiah Curtin, an American who collected Irish tales. *wiki

Book excerpt: The original version of the Grimms' tales in English for the first time—in an acclaimed, illustrated edition When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Book excerpt: This edition of the ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales – Illustrated by Charles Folkard’ was originally published in 1911, and contains fifty-six of the Brothers Grimm’s classic stories. The narratives include the famed tales of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Frog Prince’, and many more. They are all beautifully illustrated by Charles Folkard – in both colour, and black and white. Folkard (1878 – 1963) was a celebrated British illustrator, known for creating ‘Teddy Tail’, a popular cartoon character who rain in the Daily Mail newspapers for decades. He is also renowned for his illustrations for Arabian Nights, Aesop’s Fables, Pinocchio – and of course – the Brothers Grimm. The Brothers Grimm are perhaps the best known folklorists of all time. Die Brüder Grimm; Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. This is a text to be appreciated by young and old alike; extraordinary for its literary as well as artistic significance. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
