Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry (1888) is a collection of stories edited by W.B. Yeats. Compiled at the height of the Celtic Twilight, a movement to revive the myths and traditions of Ancient Ireland, Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry captures a wide range of stories, songs, poems, and firsthand accounts from artists and storytellers dedicated to the preservation of Irish culture. In “Frank Martin and the Fairies,” a sickly man discusses the presence of dozens of fairies inside his weaving shop. When a child in his village falls ill, he claims to have seen the fairies building a small, simple coffin, preparing to convey the poor youth from the world of men to their own, shadowy realm. “Bewitched Butter,” a tale from Donegal, recounts a strange event involving two farming families and a prized Kerry cow. When the young Grace Dogherty arrives on the Hanlon’s doorstep asking to milk their cow, Mrs. Hanlon initially refuses her. But after several entreaties, the matriarch relents, allowing the girl to take some of the Kerry cow’s milk. When Moiley stops producing milk, the Hanlon’s fear that Grace has cast an evil eye on the cow, thereby threatening their livelihood. Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry compiles numerous tales of giants, gods, devils, kings and heroes, preserving the legends of Ireland’s past, an age threatened with erasure by science, reason, and modern industrialization. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of W.B. Yeats’s Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: This book offers a panoramic view of the emerging eco-paradigm of Translation Studies, known as Eco-Translatology, and presents a systematic study of the theoretical discourse from ecological perspectives in the field of Translation Studies. Eco-Translatology describes and interprets translation activities in terms of the ecological principles of Eco-holism, traditional Eastern eco-wisdom, and ‘Translation as Adaptation and Selection’. Further, Eco-Translatology approaches the phenomenon of translation as a broadly conceived eco-system in which the ideas of ‘Translation as Adaptation and Selection’, as well as translation as a ‘textual transplant’ promoting an ‘eco-balance’, are integrated into an all-encompassing vision. Lastly, Eco-Translatology reinforces contextual uniqueness, emphasizing the deep embeddedness of texts, translations, and the human agents involved in their production and reception in their own habitus. It is particularly encouraging, in this increasingly globalised world, to see a new paradigm sourced from East Asian traditions but with universal appeal and applications, and which adds to the diversity and plurality of global Translation Studies. This book, the first of its kind, will substantially expand the horizons of Translation Studies, a field that is still trying to define its own borders, and will open a wealth of new possibilities. Destined to become a milestone in the field of Translation, Interpretation and Adaptation Studies, as well as eco-criticism, it will introduce readers to a wholly new epistemological intervention in Translation Studies and therefore will open new vistas of thoughts, discussion and criticism.

Book excerpt: An exploration of the different tenants of Fairyland from around the world—hobgoblins, sprites, bogeys, pixies, goblins, bonga, duende, elves, and more. While it’s true that fairy folk love a good garden and take great pleasure in a tulip, there are dozens of beasties who fall under the fairy domain that are not quite as delightful as the quintessential flower fairy. This book is an exploration of the many things that go bump in the night near the fairy mound. Along with an exploration of folklore and historical literature, readers will delight in fairy tales that demonstrate everything from striking a bargain with a fairy to staving off changelings to laughing with the dwarves. Included are fairy tales and myths from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia plus classic stories by Thomas Crofton Croker, Joseph Jacobs, Clara Stroebe, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Yei Theodora Ozaki, and others on goblins, trolls, gnomes, pookas, changelings, banshees, and more! Chapters include: A Fear of Little Men: Elves, Trolls, Leprechauns, Tree Spirits, Brownies, Coblyns, Dwarves, Goblins, Bonga, Trolls and Other Fairy Folk of Glen, Forests and Hearth The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: Changelings and Other Greedy Kidnappers of the Fairy Kingdom I’m Not Drunk, It’s Just My Pooka: Tales of the Trickster Fairy and Its Wild Counterpart Is That All There Is? Fairies Who Give, or The Barter System Whoops, There It Is: How to Enter the Fairy Kingdom (or How Not To) If you think fairies are merely delicate beings who follow you about on gossamer wings, consider yourself warned! The kingdom of the fairy is one of vengeance, thievery, trickery, and wild creatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Butler YEATS (1865-1939), son of J.B. Yeats and brother of Jack Yeats, both celebrated painters, was born in Dublin and educated at the Godolphin School, Hammer-smith, and the High School of Art in Dublin, where he developed an interest in mystic religion and supernatural. He was friend of mystical writer George Russell and became a member of the Dublin Hermetic Society. At 21 he abandoned art as a profession in favour of literature, writing "John Sherman and Dhoya" (1891). Yeatss early study of Irish lore and legends resulted in "Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry" (1888), "The Celtic Twilight" (1893), and "The Secret Rose" (1897). With each succeeding collections of poems, Yeats moved further from the elaborate Pre-Raphaelite style of the 1890s. From 1922 to 1928, he served as a senator of the Irish Free State and was chairman of the commission on coinage. In 1923 he received the Nobel Prize for literature. He died in south of France, but in 1948 his body was brought back to Ireland and interred at Drumcliff in Sligo, where much of his childhood had been spent.
