Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delamination failure of laminated composites exhibits two distinct characteristics; (1) the corresponding failure strengths display considerable scatter, and (2) the morphologies of the fracture surfaces and the interlaminar strengths are dependent on the magnitude of the fiber orientation difference (abbreviated as FOD below) angle between the two adjacent plies of the interface. A variational solution technique is developed to determine the three-dimensional edge effect stresses around pin-loaded holes in symmetric laminated composites. The stress state around the holes is divided into two parts, one the in-plane stress state determined using the Classical Laminated Plate Theory (CLPT) and the other the boundary layer stress state arising from the edge effects which only exists in the vicinity of the holes. The equilibrium equations of boundary layer stress state with zeroth-order approximation are derived from a set of power expansions. Analytical solutions for the boundary layer stress state are then obtained by imposing zeroth-order stress functions on the variational principle of complementary energy. The developed variational solution technique is versatile, which can be used to calculate the edge effect stresses at straight free edges, curved free edges and pin-loaded hole edges with or without friction in laminated composites. An experimental investigation is conducted to study the effects of fiber orientations on the interlaminar shear (ILS) strengths of CYTEC ® G40-800/5276-1 graphite/epoxy laminated composites. The ILS strengths at the [straight theta]-interfaces ([straight theta] = 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70°, 80° and 90°), around which the two neighboring plies have a FOD angle [straight theta], are experimentally characterized using the modified double notch shear specimens with an elaborately designed layup. A stochastic simulation model is proposed in a phenomenological sense, in which the probabilistic dependence of ILS strengths on the FOD angles [straight theta] is simulated as a non-Gaussian nonstationary stochastic process within the bounded interval [0,?/2]. Two innovative delamination criteria in terms of quadratic and cubic polynomials in each case, are developed based on the Malmeister strength theory and Hashin assumption. The intent of the developed criteria is to include the effects of [straight theta]-dependent and directionally-dependent interlaminar strengths into the failure evaluation of laminated composites, as demonstrated by the experiments in the present thesis. Book Synopsis Failure Characterization of a Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Through Proof Testing by : HT. Hahn
Download or read book Failure Characterization of a Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Through Proof Testing written by HT. Hahn and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the present work was to investigate the failure behavior of a [02/90/±45] AS/3501-5A graphite/epoxy laminate through proof testing. The primary emphasis was on the delineation of the effect of the proof test on the residual strength and life, the establishment of strength-life relations, and the identification of failure process. The test series consisted of static tests, tension-tension fatigue tests preceded by proof tests, and examinations of failure modes. Major findings can be summarized as follows: (1) Proof tests have little effect on the residual strength and life. (2) Strength and life are statistically interrelated so that a statically stronger specimen has a longer life. (3) A higher modulus is an indication of a higher strength and longer life. (4) The failure process of the present laminate is similar to that of the quasi-isotropic [0/90/±45]8 laminate. However, the crack multiplication in the present laminate is more extensive and faster. (5) Delamination surfaces consist of shiny and dull areas. The shiny areas have bare fibers, whereas the dull areas have fiber imprints in the epoxy.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique technique is described for separating a cured graphite/epoxy composite into its individual laminae while maintaining the integrity of each lamina. The use of this technique provides information heretofore unavailable for fracture and failure analysis. Examples of damage characterization using this technique are presented for pin-loaded holes and impact areas. In the case of the pin-loaded holes the extent of fiber bundle fractures in the internal laminae are shown to be a function of increasing loads. For impact-damaged areas the delaminations between the various laminae were marked with a unique process prior to the deplying process. After the laminae were deplied, the indicated areas of delamination and the incidents of fiber fracture were measured using a digital image analyzer. Photographs of typical damage are included.
Book Synopsis Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Cracking and Delamination in Glass/epoxy Laminates by : M. Caslini
Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Cracking and Delamination in Glass/epoxy Laminates written by M. Caslini and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on characterizing matrix cracking and delamination behavior in multidirectional laminates. Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. Keywords: Fatigue(Mechanics), and Stiffness loss.
Book Synopsis Investigation of Failure Mechanisms in Fiber Composite Laminates by : Philip V McLaughlin (Jr)
Download or read book Investigation of Failure Mechanisms in Fiber Composite Laminates written by Philip V McLaughlin (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical investigation is made into the behavior of fiber composite laminates after initial lamina failure has occurred in top (outside) layer. The analysis investigates the relative importance of delamination of the failed layer and of stress concentrations in the adjacent lamina to the ultimate failure mechanisms of laminates. A general interlaminar stress analysis is developed which takes into account interface nonlinear behavior and delamination effects. The analysis is specialized to a laminate whose top layer contains a long crack. Laminated plate theory is used in conjunction with the interlaminar stress analysis to analyze first and subsequent failure of graphite/epoxy (0/90), (plus or minus 45), and (0/plus or minus 45) laminates under several stress states.

Book Synopsis Failure Analysis of a Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Subjected to Bolt-Bearing Loads by : JH. Crews
Download or read book Failure Analysis of a Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Subjected to Bolt-Bearing Loads written by JH. Crews and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy laminates (T300/5208) were tested under bolt-bearing loads to study failure modes, strengths, and failure energy. Specimens had a range of configurations to produce failures by the three nominal failure modes: tension, shearout, and bearing. Radiographs were made after damage onset and after ultimate load to examine the failure modes. Also, the laminate stresses near the bolt hole were calculated for each test specimen configuration, and then used with a failure criterion to analyze the test data.
