Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the bolted joint strength of Kevlar/epoxy and graphite/ epoxy [0/45/90/-45]2s composite laminates is presented. The fundamental problem of a single bolt hole loaded symmetrically in tension is considered. The first objective of the study was to generalize the relationships between width, edge distance, hole size, thickness, washer diameter, and degree of lateral constraint with bolted joint strength based on experimental observations. The second objective, which is the focus of this paper, was to numerically predict the same observation using only the composite's lamina properties. The effective laminate behavior is calculated using a nonlinear laminate analysis based on lamina properties and ply orientations. The effective laminate properties are then input into a nonlinear finite-element analysis computer code to model the bolted joint. The predicted bolted joint failure regions and strengths were consistent with the experimental data, although improved nonlinear constitutive finite-element models are needed. The analysis is useful in predicting critical width, edge distance, and washer sizes needed to optimize bolted joint strength.

Book excerpt: Joints in components or structures incur a weight penalty, are a source of failure, cause manufacturing problems, and are unfortunately unavoidable in most structures ranging from aircraft, and spacecraft to ships and offshore platforms, to automobiles, bridges and buildings. An important requirement for the complete design of practical structures is the development of attachment methods and joint designs. Recent Advances in Structural Joints and Repairs for Composite Materials provides an up-to-date account of adhesively bonded and mechanically fastened joints and repairs. Audience: This book will prove to be an informative resource for all engineers and researchers involved with joining and repair of composite structures.

Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress and strength analysis of composite laminates with a through-the-thickness circular hole under uniaxial tensile load has been conducted. The hole is filled with a rigid core simulating a bolt. As a representation of the force at the bolted joint, displacement boundary conditions are applied to the rigid core. The stress analysis is based on treating the laminate as a homogeneous plate using a finite element technique. The strength analysis is based on the tensor polynomial failure criterion applied to each ply. The ultimate laminate failure strength is based on the last ply failure stress. The resulting predictions of strength are found to be conservative as compared to experimental values.

This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of fibre composites in the design of load carrying aircraft structures has been increasing over the last few decades. At the same time, aluminium alloys are still present in many structural parts, which has led to an increase of the number of hybrid composite-aluminium structures. Often, these materials are joined at their interface by bolted connections. Due to their different response to thermal, mechanical and environmental impact, the composite and the aluminium alloy parts are subject to different design and certification practices and are therefore considered separately. The current methodologies used in the aircraft industry lack well-developed methods to account for the effects of the mismatch of material properties at the interface. One such effect is the thermally induced load which arises at elevated temperature due to the different thermal expansion properties of the constituent materials. With a growing number of hybrid structures, these matters need to be addressed. The rapid growth of computational power and development of simulation tools in recent years have made it possible to evaluate the material and structural response of hybrid structures without having to entirely rely on complex and expensive testing procedures. However, as the failure process of composite materials is not entirely understood, further research efforts are needed in order to develop reliable material models for the existing simulation tools. The work presented in this dissertation involves modelling and testing of bolted joints in hybrid composite-aluminium structures. The main focus is directed towards understanding the failure behaviour of the composite material under static and fatigue loading, and how to include this behaviour in large scale models of a typical bolted airframe structure in an efficient way. In addition to that, the influence of thermally induced loads on the strength and fatigue life is evaluated in order to establish a design strategy that can be used in the industrial context. The dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first one, the background and the theory are presented while the second one consists of five scientific papers
