Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to define and explain the archetypal pattern of redemption that underlies our whole notion of resolution in literature and to demonstrate, through multiple examples, that successful literature--poems and stories that have shown endurance or popularity--uses this pattern in specific ways. This theory should help readers to interpret both particular works of literature and the general notion of literature. The pattern of redemption employed here, in its ideal form, involves the sacrifice of an innocent redeemer to save something that has been lost. Because this pattern of redemption is typically associated with Christianity, this book can be taken as proposing a Christian theory of criticism. Current textbooks on literary criticism and theory cover a range of perspectives, such as Marxism, feminism, multiculturalism, reader response, and queer theory, but they invariably ignore the field of Christian criticism. Therefore, this book may be most useful as a supplementary text for courses in literary criticism that might include a Christian perspective. At the same time, however, the terms and methodology proposed here are not exclusive to or dependant on Christian beliefs, so readers of all types may find this approach useful. The greatest strength of this book is its application of the theory to numerous examples from a wide range of genres and periods of literature, testing the theory on classical and Shakespearean works such as the Iliad and Odyssey, Hamlet and Coriolanus; best sellers such as The Lord of the Rings, Le Petit Prince, Valley of the Dolls, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; horror stories such as Frankenstein; postcolonial novels such as Things Fall Apart and The Kite Runner; and lyric poems. Consequently, even readers who are skeptical of the assumptions used here should find the many concrete examples thought-provoking.

Book excerpt: This is book 2 in the Check Mate series. (Warning: This book series contains violence and suicides. It is recommended for adults only.) The American Townships aren't like they used to be, at least not in San Tropolis, the township where President Aldrich rules. Thanks to the plotters and their attempts to get people to rebel, there's a lot of civil unrest. Bombings and rioting are commonplace now. Such things were unheard of until recently. As more people become brave enough to stand up against Aldrich and the High Council, the president fears he is losing control of the township. Despite their efforts, Darren and the other plotters still haven't been able to put an end to Check Mate, the show that rewards assailants for killing people. To make matters worse, one of the plotters has betrayed their group. Can the remaining plotters ever be able to come up with a plan to end the lethal reality series? Will there be a way to take Aldrich and his brother, Frank Sommers, down? It at least helps that most people hate the president and the High Council. The plotters may get more help than they expected. Their group faces a daunting task, but they will never accept Aldrich's rules or his barbaric TV show. Will they be safe? Will they ever get over the betrayal from one of their own? Will they ever be able to put an end to Check Mate? Whatever happens, they know that they can't sit back and watch people be killed each week for the High Council's entertainment. No matter what, the plotters must do everything they can to stop Aldrich and the High Council!

Book Synopsis Barack Obama and the Politics of Redemption by : Stanley A. Renshon
Download or read book Barack Obama and the Politics of Redemption written by Stanley A. Renshon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every new president raises many questions in the public mind. Because Barack Obama was a relative newcomer to the national political scene, he raised more questions than most. Would he prove to be a pragmatic centrist or would his politics of hope ultimately flounder on the rocky shoals of America’s deep political divisions? What of his leadership style? How would the uncommonly calm character he demonstrated on the campaign trail shape Obama’s political style as commander-in-chief? Based on extensive biographical, psychological, and political research and analysis, noted political psychologist Stanley Renshon follows Obama’s presidency through the first two years. He digs into the question of who is the real Obama and assesses the advantages and limitations that he brings to the presidency. These questions cannot be answered without recourse to psychological analysis. And they cannot be answered without psychological knowledge of presidential leadership and the presidency itself. Renshon explains that Obama’s ambition has been fueled by a desire for redemption—his own, that of his parents, and ultimately for the country he now leads, which has enormous consequences for his choices as president of a politically divided America.
Book Synopsis On Redemption, the Value of Putting Bad Things to Good Use by : Peyton Craig McElroy
Download or read book On Redemption, the Value of Putting Bad Things to Good Use written by Peyton Craig McElroy and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation offers a theory of a solution to the problem of lost meaning in life due to regrettable, past events. Each of us wishes for a meaningful life, but each of us, too, is vulnerable to threats to the meaning in life. The dissertation argues that a phenomenon called redemption can restore lost meaningfulness, and increase the value of our lives, overall. The first step in the argument is to demonstrate the need for a new model of redemption. The next step is to argue that redemption is a matter of transforming the meaning of events in our lives from bad to good in a thick, eudaimonistic sense related to a person's well-being. Finally, I show that this transformation not only increases a person's well-being but, more importantly, changes the relationship a person has with his past; By satisfying conditions for meaningfulness—a special value a life can have, distinct from its moral goodness or happiness—redemption renders the past more meaningful that it would have otherwise been. Because of this, redemption can solve the problem articulated in the beginning of the dissertation—the problem of lost meaning in life due to bad, past events.
